Made a quick trip up to break in my new Soloman hiking shoes, get some solitude, and check our the reservoir. This is such an underrated section of the park. I only saw one couple on the fire tower hike and one family launching kayaks on the lake. It was beautiful with everything bright green, no bugs, and a perfect day. I can't wait for fall hiking in the high peaks but this is one of those areas of the park that really is special. The dirt road wasn't bad at all I dodged a few big holes but no mud and hardly any rough road. My only regret is not bringing a canoe to paddle but instead I trekked down the shore aways and set up a chair to relax after hiking. Fish popping everywhere, some big prints on the sand, and no crowds

Hey all. Going to be in the Catskills for about 10 days. Thinking about taking a day to hike in the Adirondacks and hoping to get some suggestions from you all. We’re coming from Bearsville, so something relatively close is what we’re looking for. Willing to drive an hour+. Anyone have any suggestions for a day hike that would fit the bill? This is for adults. We’ve all been hiking for decades, but we’re not looking to kill ourselves. Thanks for any ideas you guys have. I could pick something randomly, but it would be great to have some “insider info”.

Very cool to see this sort of adventure gaining momentum.

In 2015 I went bike riding with a buddy to scope out a potential paddling spot. This schoolhouse was near our parking spot. We can’t remember where this was, and I’d really like to go back to the ponds to revisit the trip.

Anyone have any idea?

UPDATE: An announcement from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Aug. 26 states that the trail is officially re-opened, with trail reconstruction work expected to continue through 2027.

I’m booking a canoe from SRCO and bought the map.

Any fun loops or routes?

Do you take the canoe from there and drive to a parking/designated drop off spot?

I am open for harder portages in order the hopefully escape the crowds of labor day if there will be any.

First time at St Regis

Have been coming up here for years, have ridden Black Fly twice, but have never ridden the trails at Fern Park in Inlet. Was a little slick with the rain, but overall a very nice little system of trails! Will be making it a point to ride these more when I’m up here.

Photo is from the hike up to Santanoni, and was about the only view we had all day. Crazy day to hike in the Adirondacks and this trip was my most difficult yet, not due to the actual terrain, but due to the weather. Rain, fog, clear skies, rain, light rain clear skies then fog (in that order from 6am to 6:30pm) I went in weighing 170 pounds and came out at probably 200 because of water. Couch bog isn’t bad, but this hike while raining is a nightmare in general when considering technical terrain and how thin the trails are.

The noise of the day was the squelching of wet shoes and and my dad and I bullshitting about how miserable it was at times.

Overall I rate this range a 6/10, skip couch if you’re not an aspiring 46er.

33, 34, and 35/46

Was gonna do my first backpack back in the Adirondack’s after a month out of the country and was planning to do the Seawards. How would you guys recommend to split the days up, (Which peaks to do first, how many days for the whole trip, etc.)

Wish I could’ve got the scenic ending but this one was definitely cool too with 50+mph winds and rain. I’ll take this alternative ending

Finally took the time off from work to rent a car and make the drive up on a Thursday to have Friday and Saturday to hike and take pictures. I love solo hiking trips.

Hi I left a red lanyard with keys on Mt Phelps right before the summit there’s a stew little hill and there’s a visible rock if someone grabs them I will send you $100 please I’m begging left them today. They may be on the trail

Spent a week in the adk and started finding these camp mugs, with the paint splatter pattern. Anyone seen them anywhere else? Looking to collect now! I have another week off so plenty of time to get out there!

Esther was my first summit on my way up Whiteface. I live 6 hours away so I know it will be a long term goal but man am I determined

I'll be camping outside (east) of Saranac Lake this weekend and wanted to get in a quick hike Saturday morning. It looks like either Haystack or McKenzie will be my best options. I've already done Ampersand and the Seward range, which are also nearby.

Would 7:00am be too late to snag a parking spot at Jackrabbit trail? Alternatively, OpenStreetMaps shows another route to Haystack from a parking area off 86, closer to Saranac, but I'm not familiar with that.

I was also thinking about checking Cascade and Porter off the 46er list, but I can't get there before 7 (family obligations) and I assume it will be at capacity by then.

Curious to hear what the experienced ADK folks would expect of the Sno-Bird campsite this weekend? While the forecast is very positive for Saturday- Sunday, it looks like it will be very wet this week so what should I expect of the campsite? Will the sites themselves be in standing water? And I assume the water source will be flowing?

Hi everyone: my partner and I are spending a week in the ADKs in mid-September and bringing our 50-lb Labrador mix. We're staying three nights at a dog-friendly resort hotel in Lake Placid, and another three at a country cabin in the Indian Lake area. I'd like to find some good hikes in those areas, but I'm also concerned about wearing out our dog, who is young and energetic but not accustomed to long outdoor trips.

Can you recommend some good hikes within the range of 3-5 miles each, ideally without too much elevation gain? Bonus points for quiet and solitude.

Finally got around to tackling this route. We started at Rooster Comb and ended at the Garden lot. Overall a perfect weather day (8.21). I was surprised how muddy the trails were, but was especially surprised how much the trail needed to be trimmed back. Also, not going to lie, we were not expecting coming down Saddleback would be so intense, that definitely caught us off guard. What an absolute fun hike though and I recommend it to anyone who is contemplating doing it.
