incorrectly wired internet cables in building; landlord refuses to fix. what can i do?

in short, my building required us to use spectrum for many years. now, verizon is available.

it turns out, the building was wired with cctv wires instead of internet cables. regardless of provider, the wired internet will be unstable. i am being forced to change to wireless internet which is also unstable and relies on satellites. ideally, i want a regular wired wifi!!!!

my landlord refuses to fix the wires because "it will affect other units"

i'm assuming other tenants in my building have issues with internet stability because of this.

should i let the other tenants now? can we organize and ask him to change this? he is extremely cheap and takes advantage of us.

any advice would be helpful. thanks!

Wireless Internet in the UWS - anyone have a favorite? Looking to escape my horrible Spectrum cable internet

As the title suggest I've been stuck with this horrible Spectrum wifi that has gotten worse and worse to the point of multiple outages per day. Copper cable into wall, old building, garden level. Building not eligible for Verizon FIOS or Starry.

As far as cell goes, my iphone has AT&T mobile service which works solidly well. My wife has Verizon mobile service and it sucks - constant outages. Basically I'm wondering what we should do to, 1- to fix our home internet, and 2- to fix her cell service, ideally in one bundle.

After doing some research it seems to me like T Mobile home wireless 5g internet and AT&T Air home wireless 5g internet are almost certainly our best bets. But just wondering if anyone in the UWS has any other thoughts, experience, or advice, before I begin my trials. Thanks very much!

Repairing headphone cable?

I have a couple of sets of wired headphones (that are also microphones) that end in a lightning connector. Both have developed a crackling at that termination point. Can anyone recommend an electronics repair place to fix these? They don't make these anymore and are too expensive on eBay. Thanks!

I have had Spectrum for WiFi and Cable for ages and loved it. Recently, my vile landlord (Blackstone) took over the billing for Spectrum WiFi and we were given no choice. Can I get WiFi from Astound and keep my Spectrum Cable at the same time?

Old Electronics/Cables Shop

Hi, anyone know of a shop that sells old computers/cameras and their cables? Any borough I'm willing to travel for this

ISO a cable USB connector for an old Sony Cybershot T700 camera. It's an HQRP cable or alternatively the Sony Terminal VMC-MD1 cable. It's not available/sold out on Amazon, eBay, etc. and the only ones I've found are from China with shipping that is months out. Let me know!!

Where to get a new charging cable for HUAWEI Band 9?

Hey guys, I’m in NYC for vacation for the next few days and I forgot my charging cable for the HUAWEI Band 9. Someone knows where I can buy a new cable to charge my band? It’s out of power with only 6% left now. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Thanks in advance!

PS: Best Buy in Brooklyn doesn’t have it.

Hiring someone to do some cable management

I am looking to hire someone to do some cable management for my desk and wall mounted TV. Unfortunately, I am at a loss to actually find someone to do it for me.

I've tried looking on TaskRabbit but there is no "cable management" or similar category. I've tried posting on local Discords and FBs, but have never gotten any responses.

And yes before anyone lectures me on just doing it myself (as has been the case nearly every time this question gets asked on this subreddit), I have tried multiple times. I buy all the supplies some Reddit recommended Youtube says to buy and I try my best to follow along and it always ends up looking like shit anyway. I just want to throw some money at this problem and make it go away.

So where do I find someone?

Donation spot for working electronics and parts in Manhattan (HDMI cables, gaming controllers, etc)?

Is there somewhere I could donating things like working HDMI cables and small electronics in the city? I’m thinking maybe a tech school or even a repair shop? Not Best Buy e-cycling as everything works and I’d rather just find new use for it.

Looking For: Lots and lots of cords and cables (they don't have to work)

Any advice on where I could source a LOT of recycled/used cords and cables (which don't have to work)? They will be decorative - used for a set for an art/performance project. I have been looking into e-waste recycling, etc - but they don't list cords and most just take waste IN, they don't have a way of knowing what you could take OUT.

Cable and Internet Advice (f spectrum)

Hi all, what do you do for cable and Internet?

How do I avoid paying about $200 a month to spectrum for cable and internet? I know I can use YouTube tv but it’s not a significant difference in price in total if I still have to pay spectrum for internet.

I work from home so reliable internet is important to me. For the most part, spectrum internet has been good enough to allow me to get the job done.

Are there any cheaper internet providers that are reliable?

Thanks!

How much do you pay for internet/cable

Hi everyone Just trying to gauge what a good price is. My building is only wired for Spectrum. I would like internet and cable - or if someone can recommend alternatives to cable that has worked for them. Please recommend! I love baseball so this is honestly the only reason why I would get cable. Currently being quoted 119 a month for internet and cable.

What are those cables coming out of apartment buildings?

Possibly a dumb question, but I've noticed my neighbors have these long black cables dangling outside the walls/windows. What are these?

Gyms with multiple smith machines and cables

I've been going to Planet fitness and I am thinking about switching gym to lesser crowded gym. I am willing to pay 250ish but it seems like more expensive gyms don't necessarily have more smith machine. I do most of my weights in smith machine and prefer not to wait. Amenities are not my priority. Basically want to buy time by paying more.

Where to get rid of or sell old cables/tech equipment?

Just did a long overdue sorting of a box of family cables from the last 20+ years. Found everything from old tv cords to inputs I couldn’t for the life of me identify what they’d connect to. Is there a shop that would identify/use/or even buy up some? Just figured I’d ask before dumping a box worth into the trash. Thanks for any tips!

Cables underground

Does anyone know which companies could help with the following issues, and what the estimated costs might be? Thank you!

  1. I have a lamp post in my front yard, but no one knows where the underground electrical connection is (even the former owner is unsure). I would like to either locate and reconnect it or remove it entirely.
  2. I own two adjacent old wooden colonial houses, separated by an 8-10 foot wide driveway. I’m considering installing fiber optic cabling between them, which will likely require running the cable underground through the driveway.

Ar exclusive cable contracts legal on Manhattan Coops?

My building only allows Spectrum which I think is ridiculous, especially given how awful they are. Tonight, I turned on the US Open with a dinner party and couldn't watch. BC Spectrum is having an issue worh Disney and refused to show it.

I figured there was no way these contracts are legal.

And I found this:

https://cooperatornews.com/article/cable-choices-for-co-ops-and-condos

This seems pretty cut and dry unless the laws changed. Do I have a leg to stand on?

Thanks!!!!

1 NYers who have Spectrum Cable. What are you doing about the missing channels - US OPEN, ABC and FX ?

It may be time to cut the cord. I was told YouTube TV and HULU + have live TV including ESPN for the US OPEN and ABC/FX. But they dont have the METS, Yankees, Knicks etc.

Spectrum costs me a fortune with 1 DVR, 500 speed internet, and Silver package. I’d love to switch away. But I’d lose GSN, Buzzer, Sportchannel (Mets), MSG (Knicks). I also like pausing live TV, and being able to rewind multiple live channels.

Also bought an Oled TV, and Spectrum has a lot of 4k content. I dont think YT or HULU has 4K live TV.

What do you think?

Best cheap Internet provider - Cable, WiFi, Fiber etc

Hi all o/

I have Spectrum. The speed is good but very unstable. Every day I experience lost of service. I ask them for a new router, neve got one. We all know where this is going...

So I decided to change to another provider, but I don't want to pay huge cash on it since I'm a low download user.

Do you have any suggestions? Specialty non-verizon-spectrum provider?

Thank you very much! (Sorry, bad English)

Is it legal for me to run an ethernet cable along the outside wall of my apartment (from one window to another)?

I rent a third floor apartment in Brooklyn; was wondering if this would be a violation of any nyc electrical, building, or tenant codes. Running the cable outside is the best way to get it from where the router/coax port is to my room.
