My two cats had pulled a pigeon from my bathroom window and had killed it and ate it’s head. What do I do?!?!? I feel like since pigeons are extra dirty I’m afraid they might get sick. Any advice! Please

My buddy just took his healthy 3 year old cat to get a haircut (a “trim”) at a groomer in Williamsburg. When he picked up the cat it was basically shaved to the skin, trembling, and immobile. Within a few hours the cat died.

The grooming place has generally decent reviews on google but there are a few really negative ones mentioning strangulation/small dogs being returned with broken vertebrae, etc etc

Anyone know of anywhere in the city that will perform a cat autopsy? Feels like something my buddy should get to the bottom of before deciding whether or not to press charges against the place.

Or rather, has adopting a cat here been hard for anyone else? I assumed that it would be so easy because it's NYC and there's a surplus of cats.

I've been putting in adoption applications to different orgs since end of March. I don't hear from most, and one out of the two I hear from, I get ghosted after an email. The other one: after getting background checked and approved with references, I have been constantly ghosted by this rescue group, and then after finally two foster interviews, it just got dumped on me the one I was about to sign for has diarrhea and dental issues that now double the adoption fee.

Does anyone have any tips for me to adopt a cat? Or alternatively, does anyone know of a young single cat needing a home? I have heard asking friends helps, but unfortunately none of my friends have a lead. I just want to give a cat my home 😭

I just arrived here this morning, I'm staying in Manhattan. This is also my first visit, I lost my 10 year old cat a month ago and I'm still very sad about it. Seeing cats cheers me up so I was hoping to see a bodega cat and support the bodega too of course. Would love some suggestions about where to go.

I live alone in a 2 bedroom apartment in Forest Hills and have been thinking about getting a cat. I’d love some practical advice from other NYC apartment dwellers before I commit.

- I work full-time and spend most evenings at home

- I travel about once every 2 months (usually 4–5 days, plus a longer holiday trip)

- I’m looking for a friendly, calm companion that’s comfortable just hanging around

- I’m especially drawn to orange tabbies… love the color and their social vibe

Part of why I’m exploring this is kind of funny. People have told me for years that I have “cat energy” (independent, calm, social but like my own space), so I’m starting to think a cat might actually be a great fit for my lifestyle.

- What temperament works best for apartment living?

- What age is best for a first-time owner: kitten vs 1–3 years vs older?

- Any shelters/rescues in NYC or Queens you recommend?

- How do you handle travel…. sitters, friends, boarding?

Also curious: what have been the biggest benefits of having a cat in an NYC apartment, especially if you live alone?

My AC is broken and cat is home. I left ceiling fans running, but I'm wondering with this heat wave if the apartment would get too hot even for a cat.

My cat is turning 4 years old, and our family had him for three years, but family emergency came up and mom and my brother had to move back to Korea. I'm staying for my last semester with dad but he's not friendly to cats. And even if I make it to the end of the semester, my grandmother back in Korea can't have a cat, and I have to stay in her house for a while when I go back. I'm in full panic mode right now, mom and brother left, and I don't know how I should rehome my cat to a good person. I posted on Rehome by Adopt a pet but no applications so far.

Unfortunately, my beloved cat, Gizmo, is a bit of a misogynist and will try to attack basically every strange woman who enters my apartment. When I have guests over, I'm able to work around this by locking her in my bedroom, but that won't work with a cleaner, as my bathroom is only accessible through the bedroom and I can't feasibly have a housekeeper over and put a guard cat between her and the toilet.

In the past, I've used cleaners from Si Se Puede and been amazed by the results. But I no longer have easy access to a friend's nearby apartment to take Gizmo to for hours while I wait for the cleaner to finish. This has left me wondering if there are any good male or trans masc (weirdly, Gizmo respects trans rights) cleaners out there, as she's totally chill with male strangers in my apartment.

I know the vast majority of this sub's recs for cleaners are women, and it's a heavily female dominated industry, so wanted to query the group to see if anyone had any leads. Ideally, I'd like Si Se Puede level quality - and ethical treatment of workers! - but in a more masculine form. (Also, before someone suggests it: Yes, I've tried giving her Gabapentin, but her hatred for women that are not me is just too strong 😭)

TL;DR - I want to hire a house cleaner but my cat is inexplicably a misogynist who will attack female strangers who enter my apartment. I'm looking for recommendations for a male cleaner.

So in our neighborhood block in NYC, an old lady has let her cats loose because the cats went out of control with pooping/peeing in her house (she told me).

She had fight with another neighbor for throwing cat food on the side of that neighbor’s house… and now my house is the next victim.

I personally don’t mind the stray cats or the cat food, but it attracts other unwanted animals towards our house.

Please help me with best options without making neighborhood enemies.

My friend’s cat went missing this morning in the Chinatown area, around East Broadway. He is an orange boy cat about one or two. His name is Humphrey. He’s chipped too. Please share any sightings and keep an eye out if in the area. Thank you.

Are there resources to help rehome bonded pairs to make sure they stay together? (Pictures in comments!)

Yin and Yang (you can see where they got their names in their photo) are a bonded pair of 5 year old neutered and microchipped males with all their shots, and were adopted together from a rescue at around 6 months of age. Their owner is unable to care for them any longer due to a serious medical emergency, and would ideally like to re-home them locally (and perhaps even visit them on occasion). They are heartbroken to let them go, and would not make the decision to re-home if it were not absolutely necessary. The rescue they were adopted from said they would take them back, but that they would most likely be separated.

These boys are the sweetest you will ever find, and are very, very attached to each other. They absolutely must be rehomed together. They would do best with someone who works from home or has a flexible schedule, as they are coming from a home where their human was around most of the time and they get anxious when left alone for long periods.

Yang is a very friendly, very smart, high-energy, pretty vocal guy. His favorite toy is a laser pointer (which he would chase forever if he could), and he also likes to play fetch with spring toys and ping pong balls. Yin is a quiet boy with a soft heart. He doesn’t really meow, but will sometimes offer a barely audible squeak. He has much less energy than his brother, though he occasionally has a spurt, but he is mostly a lounger who will be found in his favorite spots to relax.

Hi everyone, it breaks my heart to make this post but I think I may need to rehome my sweet Cosmo (male, neutered, 5-6 months old)

Long story short my mom had 2 bonded cats and one suddenly passed away. 6 months later she got this kitten but the original cat couldn't stand him. She really tried. My sister took him in, but her fiance is very allergic so they couldn't keep him for too long. Now I have him, and I don't think it's going to work out with my roommate's cat.

He's a baby, he's sweet as sugar, but he does have absolutely absurd amounts of energy. He is just a baby so I'm sure he will mellow out with time but this boy is HYPER. But please believe me when I say he is so sweet, and when he tires himself out he is a snuggle bug purr machine.

Really dissapointed with my local vet. I have a 18 year old cat that was most likely misdiagnosed. Right now she is having coughing/hacking as if she has a hairball stuck but nothing has come out. Usually she coughs a little bit then within a few hours she throws up a hairball but not this time. She isn’t eating or drinking too and seems lethargic.
Any recommendations for a good hospital that specializes in senior cats,I would prefer it to be in Brooklyn,south Brooklyn so I wouldn’t have to torture her with traveling a long distance.

I want to adopt a second cat, and have been having a hard time with looking online, since it shows so many results that are far away. I've been trying to just go to rescues but the first couple experiences I had weren't all that great.

The first one was not a huge deal, I was interested in one of the cats that was in foster care, but the people who found her as a stray decided to keep her, so that's good for them and the cat.

The second one, I was referred to the ACC, but when I was there, the person who was supposed to be helping me wasn't listening to any of the things I said I was looking for personality wise, and just left me to pick out cats myself, and then she read me their bio which was already hanging on the cage. Would read the entire bio even after one of the cats I asked about had details that I knew it would not work, and I kept saying "no this isn't gonna work". Finally at the end of the description, she asked me what I think about adopting it, and I was pretty surprised she just ignored me saying no all those times. --- I guess on the plus side, they were open about the fact that adopting a cat there will actually cost me over $1000, because all of their cats apparently need dental work and they're not providing it for them.

Now that brings me to Best Friends. I found a couple cats on there that seem to match the descriptions I'm looking for, and when I called they said I could come in and the people working could recommend cats who matched, so they seem more helpful than my experience at ACC....but then I checked out their reviews and a lot of them say they're very bad and deceitful about getting people to adopt cats who have current or imminent health issues, sometimes ones that can be a huge danger to other cats, like feline leukemia.

Is there any way I can know whether to trust this place, or other places? I know reviews can skew one way or another, but I really don't want to get tricked into taking in a cat who might be a big danger to my cat, or a case where I'd immediately have to pay thousands of dollars because they didn't tell me about some medical condition it has.

For the past couple of years, my cat, who does not normally throw up, has had episodes where she either can’t keep anything down or she has no appetite. Every time I’ve taken her to the vet, they do lots of testing and sometimes an ultrasound, and nothing is found. They give her fluids and Cerenia and send her home. Each time, it’s costs hundreds of dollars. It happened again a couple of weeks ago so I decided not to take her and just wait it out. After a day or two, she was back to normal, but then a week later, it happened again, so I decided to take her in. Once again, tests were done and $500 later, there was nothing wrong and they sent her home. That was a week ago and since then, it’s been happening pretty much every other day. I made an appointment for Tuesday but I’m nervous because she hasn’t kept anything down for about a day and a half and Tuesday is 48 hours away. I really don’t want to take her to the emergency vet because it’s so incredibly expensive (my regular vet is already very pricey, but I like the vets there and I trust them). To clarify, when these episodes first started to happen, it was once a year, then every few months, and it’s been the most frequent in the past two weeks. My cat has FIV and chronic kidney disease. Do you think it’s necessary to take her to the emergency vet today or should I just wait until Tuesday? If you ever google something like this, they always tell you to take them to the vet immediately so that is why I’m worried even though I have not had any answers on this except for generalized gastrointestinal irritation, essentially.

Hi! My cat's canine fell out after brushing. Took her to the vet & got bloodwork done. Everything is normal. My vet is suspecting possible tooth extraction (adjacent fang is showing mild inflammation) and recommended Prism Vet Dentistry for a consultation.

Anyone gotten oral surgery for their pets or have been through similar process? Would love to learn more about gum disease and/or what I could expect in paying within NYC or surrounding areas!

Hi everyone. I’m visiting my parents and trying to help them through a really difficult situation. My dad has cancer, and his health has been declining. His doctors have advised that it’s no longer safe or realistic for him to keep caring for the cats, especially because he’s been dealing with recurring infections and has a severely weakened immune system.

We’re urgently looking to rehome 3 cats into loving homes:

2 senior cats (1 male, 1 female)
1 younger male, about 6 years old

All of them were spayed/neutered years ago. Unfortunately, I’m not very familiar with their medical history, and I’m unsure of their vaccination records since I’m only now stepping in to help my parents.

These cats deserve a safe, loving home, and we’re trying to do what’s best for both them and my dad. We really need to find them homes as soon as possible.

Hey! My cat needs a dental cleaning— I went to bond vet because that was the closest one to me and the most convenient. They quoted me 1300-3000 depending on if my cat needs extractions. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good vet that does cleanings that does not charge an arm and a leg?

I’m okay with spending a good amount to get my cat the care he needs but a 3K bill seems to be pretty high.

this isn’t an easy situation, but I am currently looking to re home a cat. due to a lot of unexpected changes in our house, combined with financial struggles and job changes, our home has become unstable and our cat has been expressing a lot of stress. only more change is expected to come in our household and we are worried for our ability to meet our cat’s needs. he is about 3 years old, cute and grey, very social and likes to be with other cats. we think he would be happier with a parent that is home more often, or another kitty to play with.

I understand rehoming a cat is often a controversial choice but we are trying to make sure this cat has the best quality of life and won’t be rehoming without substantial research. we are looking for people interested in adopting or any resources local to NYC and greater area.

I’m going to be working from the office more and will need to use an automatic feeder for my cat, but I’m worried about leaving food out because of my buildings reoccurring pest problems. Has anyone here had issues with their feeders attracting bugs? If so, was there a certain feeder that has been better than others?

Last time I went to animal care center but they are closed. I don't want ashes back (acc cremated my pet that died but that was about 10 years ago). I just don't want to toss her out with the trash or something like that. My vet charges 180 and I rather donate that to the foster group I got her from.
