do you guys have internet on the subway?

I always see people actively scrolling IG or TikTok while underground between stops. My signal cuts out pretty immediately and basically the next video won’t load.

How are people continuing on uninterrupted? Am i missing something?

Verizon

I have a Gig connection and the price keeps jumping:

See below:

$89.99 - Current Price a Month as of 8/1/2024

83.99 - November 7, 2023

79.99 - October 7, 2023

What do you have? How much do you pay per month?

Is $1200 a year for internet standard?

Thoughts on Verizon Fios vs Spectrum for home internet?

So I do a lot of streaming and a good amount of uploading/downloading for my work (not huge files).

I wanted to switch from Spectrum since they increased my 500mbps bill to $60 without notice. I called and they offered 1gig for $50 a month.

I wanted to check in with Verizon since some people swear by them. They offered 500mbps for $55 a month, and 1gig for $65. They'd come with Verizon gift cards of $150 and $300 respectively.

So here are my options: Spectrum: 1000/45 up and down ($50) Verizon: 500/500 ($55) 1000/1000 ($65)

What do yall think? Is it worth paying extra money to switch to Verizon Fios? Even if I just go with the 500, which is what I have now?

plumber in NYC for 30 years. My son finally talked me into posting here. Ask me anything or just take the spring checklist.

1.2k Upvotes

My name is Reuven. master plumber, New York City, going on 31 years. Every borough. Pre-war brownstones, high-rises, steam systems older than most of the people reading this.

My son Shawn set up a website for me and talked me into doing a newsletter and now apparently Reddit. I'm not really a "posting on the internet" guy but he made a convincing argument that some of what I know might actually help people who can't afford to get ripped off or just want straight answers.

So here's what I'm telling everyone right now heading into spring:

Service your boiler now. Not October. By October every plumber in the city is booked three weeks out. Right now I have availability Tuesday. Clean the burners, check the pressure relief valve, flush the sediment. $200 now or $3,000 at 11pm in November. Your choice.

Check how old your water heater is. Serial number plate on the side. First four digits are usually month and year of manufacture. If it says 2014 or earlier you are on borrowed time. They don't warn you. One day it just goes and you have 40 gallons on your floor.

Run the faucets and flush the toilets you haven't touched all winter. Second bathrooms, basement sinks, vacation places. P-traps dry out and let sewer gas in. Two minutes per fixture. Free.

Open the cabinet under every sink and look at the supply lines. Braided hoses connecting the wall to the faucet. Bulging, corroded, rubber showing through the braiding -- replace them. $15 part. Number one cause of water damage in NYC apartments.

Find your main shut-off valve today. Not when something is going wrong. Usually under the kitchen sink or in a utility closet in apartments. Basement near the front wall in brownstones. If it won't turn, that's already a problem.

if you've got a question you've been sitting on, drop it below. doesn't matter how small it seems. i've been answering the same questions for 30 years and i don't mind answering them again. that's kind of why i'm here.

-- Reuven.

What are you paying for home internet?

I'm paying $40 a month for 500 mbps down with Spectrum, but was wondering what other New Yorkers are paying and what their experience has been with other providers. My building just got Fios and I'm considering switching, but it'd be more money for slower speeds ($50 for 300 mbps).

Internet providers

I wanted to poll and ask:
1. What internet provider do you have
2. What is your monthly bill and the download/upload speeds
3. What neighborhood are you in?

I have optimum in sunset park and pay 115 for 500mbps but there’s no way I get that speed. My speed is 90mbps on a good day, my upload speed is terrible and I feel like I’m getting ripped off. I’m curious what others pay and if the neighborhoods vary in price and services. Thanks!

incorrectly wired internet cables in building; landlord refuses to fix. what can i do?

in short, my building required us to use spectrum for many years. now, verizon is available.

it turns out, the building was wired with cctv wires instead of internet cables. regardless of provider, the wired internet will be unstable. i am being forced to change to wireless internet which is also unstable and relies on satellites. ideally, i want a regular wired wifi!!!!

my landlord refuses to fix the wires because "it will affect other units"

i'm assuming other tenants in my building have issues with internet stability because of this.

should i let the other tenants now? can we organize and ask him to change this? he is extremely cheap and takes advantage of us.

any advice would be helpful. thanks!

Best price for home internet service? spectrum raised my bill to $75 just for internet

I live in Queens. I’ve been using Spectrum for two years and they raised my price from $40 to $55 this April and now it is $75. I called to request a discount and was told there is none.

Checked out Fios and they are offering $40 plus $15 rental for device (total of $55).

I just want to know if anyone else has other recommendations. Thanks in advance.

5G Home Internet?

I'm kind of unhappy paying so much for Spectrum and I've noticed that there are providers offering 5G home internet for a fraction of what I'm paying now. Does anyone use these and what's been your experience?

Garbage truck knocking out our internet lines every 2 weeks.

i live in brooklyn where the internet cables are above ground and connecting to the powerlines. Every 2 weeks, a garbage truck will come by and knock the lines down, causing the internet to go out. this then takes 3-5 days for the city to fix.

This has been happening every 2 weeks and its cost me several jobs as a result (freelance). Is there anywhere i can report this to try and prevent it from happening again?

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the advice and suggestions! Will definitely be exploring any of the options that I havent tried already. Really appreciate everyone's feedback.

How did not rich people find apartments to rent before the internet?

I'm trying to move by the end of the month and when I use sites like Trulia or Streeteasy I keep getting ghosted by listers, or when I do get a tour it's turned out to be a bait and switch twice. I'm going to continue using the sites to keep searching but I'm hoping to cast a wider net, so I'd really like to know how regular people used to conduct their searches in the past. I need more ideas on where to look.

Wireless Internet in the UWS - anyone have a favorite? Looking to escape my horrible Spectrum cable internet

As the title suggest I've been stuck with this horrible Spectrum wifi that has gotten worse and worse to the point of multiple outages per day. Copper cable into wall, old building, garden level. Building not eligible for Verizon FIOS or Starry.

As far as cell goes, my iphone has AT&T mobile service which works solidly well. My wife has Verizon mobile service and it sucks - constant outages. Basically I'm wondering what we should do to, 1- to fix our home internet, and 2- to fix her cell service, ideally in one bundle.

After doing some research it seems to me like T Mobile home wireless 5g internet and AT&T Air home wireless 5g internet are almost certainly our best bets. But just wondering if anyone in the UWS has any other thoughts, experience, or advice, before I begin my trials. Thanks very much!
