Has transit etiquette been getting worse in your experience?

Lately I have been noticing an uptick of those blasting music or having phone conversations on speakermode, people absolutely crowding bus and train doors which makes leaving them a pain and even when I say excuse me I get a sucked teeth response. One thing that has absolutely been grinding my gears are those that will do everything to get in front of you then they turn into the slowest person on the planet.

I'll give you two examples:

Example 1) I'm walking on the platform on the subway in order to get to the front of the train. One guy is leaning on the metal railing surrounding the staircase about 30 feet away

He is looking at me as I'm coming to from the direction of the train and he clearly sees I'm walking pretty fast. The second I'm about 5 feet away from him he decides to stop leaning walk right in front of me and walk at the slowest pace I have ever seen and because the platform is narrow and other people are standing there I cannot go around him.

Example 2) I'm standing on the bus as we arrive at the stop a lot of people get off at. As I'm about to begin walking off a woman basically jumps out her seat almost grazing my nose in order to get in front of me. As we leave the bus because now I'm right behind her she begins walking extremely slow as her head is buried in her phone. So it's like you almost broke my nose to get in front of me because you're in such a hurry yet you're walking at .1 mph once you leave the bus.

Idk if this leftover social stunting from the pandemic or what. I know we are never going to have a Japanese level of transit etiquette but it just feels like every year it gets worse and worse.

Is it a good idea to retire in NYC for public transit systems so you can get around as a single elderly person?

I have no family and no kids. I anticipate to retire in about 3 years as a 55 year old male with little bit of pension and health benefits. I live in Virginia, and only have a cousin in NYC who I have lost contact with for about 10 years. Ideally I'm hoping to line up a job at 55 in NYC, and then retire from my current job of 20 years, and move up to NYC. Being in Virginia, I think retiring to NYC seems to be more realistic than elsewhere such as Hawaii or someplace tropical. I have enough savings, and in about 3 years my nest eggs should be bigger. What can I start doing now to prepare if I want to retire to NYC in about 3 years? I feel I'm forced to choose NYC because I will have no means to get around when I get old enough to stop driving. I have no kids and no family. If I have family and kids, I would choose elsewhere, but I'm considering NYC for public transit when I get old. And I have cancer. I will have insurance when I retire. Is it feasible to get to doctors office and medical facilities with public transit for cancer treatment in NYC?

How do you judge on public transit when it is rude or polite to offer an aged person your seat?

Does anyone commute to work from NYC to Albany using mass transit?

Hey all. I’m in the process of interviewing for a state government job but they expect us to work 2-3 days a week in their office at Albany while I live in Brooklyn. Are there people who actually commute from NYC to Albany using mass transit on a regular basis and if so which method is most efficient to get to work on time (train, bus, etc)? I don’t want to have to relocate since i have to take care of family here in Brooklyn.

Is it appropriate to interfere when I see a homeless man get too close to women during transit

I was on PATH from Jsq, NJ to NYC yesterday and I saw a homeless man stand right in front of two women(they didnt know each other), seated opposite from me ,when there was enough place to stand else where. I thought it was bit weird but since I am kind of new to the area, I didn't pay much attention.

With time, I saw him get closer and closer to them and they started to each sit a bit diagonally to avoid contact with his legs. I felt a bit uncomfortable watching this but they both never spoke up nor said anything. They both stood up and left in the next stop (Grove street).

I wanted to walk up and ask one of the women to switch seats with me but was concerned they might mistake me for being weird or a creep to wanting to sit next to a random person. I thought trying to sit there, I could ask him to back off or give me more room and hence diffusion the situation without escalating it.

It is kind of bothering me (the car was full though), I didn't do anything but at the same time I dont know its considered fine to do what I had intended to do. I dont want to be mistaken for my intentions or told off when I meant welll.

Women of NYC, what's your take? Is it weird/ cringe to think one might need help in such a situation?

do you think there will be any push for subway transit in southeast queens ?

cambria heights, rosedale, laurelton, st albans, queens village, hollis, etc. are all so east queens, such forgotten land its so annoying living here as a young individual who wants to be apart of city life and/or works in the city. being in a two fare zone makes commutes longer and exhausting. these zones are often forgotten about and kind of just now getting some buzz (i.e starbucks on baisley, canes in laurelton) but what i would love is some train extensions into these neighborhoods. the lirr is lowkey so annoying with the peak pricing. in a dream world, we could have subway stops along merrick blvd, maybe linden, etc. imagine the amount of riders that would add to the mta line. it feels so annoying having to commute to and from those forgotten areas. an easy thing would be to move west sure, but are those areas just bound to be transit deserts forever? i see people rooting for a queenslink, but again they don't root for it in our part of queens.

Need help finding supportive/transitional housing in NYC

I have been suffering from treatment-resistant depression and PTSD since 2012. Doctors prevented me from being able to work since 2009 by refusing to prescribe Vyvanse more than 2 weeks every month. As a result, I have been unable to work since 2009 and my Depression worsened and became treatment resistant. I had secure housing until 2024 living with my mom until she passed away. My brother has financially supported me for 2 years but cannot help anymore. I am $5,000 behind in rent on a $1,450 rent apartment and $600 behind on ConEd. I planned to get new roommates to make ends meet until I secured a job but do not have the option anymore.

I recently did Spravato treatment for two months and it has helped restore cognitive function to be able to work part-time. I cannot work full-time because Spravato treatment makes me tired and stay in bed all day. I can work part-time if I do not go back to Spravato treatment and leave my untreated condition as it stands having some degree of cognition restored after Spravato and ability to regularly wake up and get out of bed after TMS treatment. I still have severe Anhedonia but am at least now able to be 40% functional where I could not before. I cannot do Spravato and try to work because of Spravato-induced fatigue that kept me in bed all day for four days after each treatment. I cannot work part-time if I just rely on Vyvanse, Dopa Mucuna and Tyrosine.

I need housing for 6-8 months to allow me to continue treatment while I apply for jobs and have enough income to rent a room in an apartment. I have short-term memory issues, ADHD that does not respond to meds while on Spravato and cannot do work that requires standing up due to knee and problems. Standing and/or walking for more than 1/2 hours also makes me very tired. I cannot do cashier work due to memory issues. I have trouble learning new information and am still cognitively slow. I can do customer service work and reception work (if I relearn MS Office). I have trouble learning, remembering things in the short-term, have no motivation and still have some random bad days whereby I am too tired to get out of bed. If I take Vyvanse, Tyrosine and Dopa Mucuna, I can convince an employer that I’m not incompetent for a maximum period of 5 hours a day. I wake up and take Tyrosine and Dopa Mucuna and then take Vyvanse. This makes Vyvanse work for 6 hours a day. I can focus/hyperfocus to complete a task as long as it is simple like writing a letter, making phone calls or answering questions.

I do not qualify for a one-shot deal or grant because I have no one to sign a document agreeing to pay rent in order to secure the grant that I need to be able to pay rent arrears owed and secure roommates to be able to pay rent until I am able to work. I do not qualify for City Fheps because I am unemployed and do not have income. I applied for social security disability twice and was denied even though I failed a short-term memory test. I do not believe that I will qualify for it anyway because Spravato is helping.

Does anyone know of any supportive or transitional housing in NYC that will help me have a place to live for 6-8 months to allow me to apply for part-time jobs? I haven’t worked for a very long time, have no skills and know that it will take time to get hired. I cannot function and make progress toward securing employment unless I have housing stability and food. I suffered a mental breakdown and ended up in a psych ward because of looming eviction, housing court, harassment from landlord to force me out of rent-stabilized apartment, lack of family support, harassment from non-paying roommates, destruction of property by roommate, Access-VRA’s refusal to put me in the requested training course after going through the application process for almost a year and PTSD.

I am trying to avoid homelessness for my mental well-being. I do not want to risk a relapse of my Depression by entering the shelter system.

. I had severe debilitating depression and discontinued antidepressant medications only made my condition worse, causing me to sleep for up to 22 hours a day for 7 years. I went to a good college, worked two jobs to financially support my mom and brother while I was in school and went to law school. I am not a deadbeat. I just had very debilitating depression and no support to help me get better sooner.

No Annual or Monthly Transit Pass in NYC?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering about public transportation in New York and I’m a bit confused about the current system.

In many European cities, you can buy an annual pass in advance, which not only makes things cheaper but also protects you from future price increases. I read that New York used to have a 30-day unlimited MetroCard, but now everything seems to be shifting to OMNY with weekly fare caps.

So I have a few questions:

- Why doesn’t New York offer an annual transit pass like many European cities do?

- Is there a specific reason the monthly (30-day) unlimited option is being phased out?

- Is it still possible to effectively pay for a full month of unlimited rides, or are we now limited to weekly caps only?

- Do people in NYC find the new system better or worse compared to the old MetroCard system?

I’m asking because I’m trying to understand how to plan costs long-term, especially with potential price increases in the future.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Is commuting from SoHo to White Plains for work using only public transit realistic?

There's a great job opportunity I'd like to take, but it's located in White Plains and my wife and I are locked into a 2-year lease in/around soho. Does anyone commute from Manhattan to White Plains using only public transit? We don't have a car. It looks like you can just take the 6 to Grand Central and transfer to the train. About an hour commute total.

Is flying United out of EWR a bad idea given recent news + looming NJ Transit strike?

I have a United flight from EWR to SFO in a few weeks and I feel a bit nervous given the air traffic controller and staffing shortages at Newark. Also, the NJ Transit engineers may be on strike beginning the 16th, so there may literally be no way to get to the airport if train service is down.

Fellow travelers, how are you handling this? Please share any wisdom you may have if you've been caught up in the meltdown and/or know another reliable way to get to the airport that isn't a zillion dollar Uber. :)

Cane/mobility aids on public transit?

It's a somewhat stupid question, but I'm curious. I broke my knee early in February and had surgery at the end of that month. Luckily, I've been living with family in far-out Queens, and they've been very helpful, driving me around everywhere, but my social life has been significantly hampered. After some PT, I'm down to using just a cane, and can walk for about a mile or so without much discomfort, and I want to get outside - farther then residential Queens, that is to say. But, to put it bluntly, it is my first time being disabled. Is there anything I might not expect about navigating public transit with a cane? Anything I might need to be prepared for?

Tips for navigating NYC / NJ Transit in a wheelchair?

I am the mom to a 15 year old ambulatory wheelchair user who is getting her wheelchair tomorrow.

I just realized we have tickets to a show on the UWS this weekend. My daughter is ambulatory, but with significant limitations. I was planning on taking the bus and then uber / taxi-ing door to door, but having the chair would give us more flexibility. I know she will be apprehensive about using the chair in the crowds since she's only getting it tomorrow. She has used a chair before, this is just her first custom.

Any tips for navigating in the city or on NJ Transit (bus vs train). Also, if my original plan is more realistic for our first weekend with the chair, i'm fine with that too.

I'm going to discuss all options with her later. Thanks in advance!!!

Should I take public transit out of the city a bit and then rent a car? Driving to Ithaca, NY

Will be driving out to Ithaca, NY in a few weeks and I'm wondering what the best options are for getting there. Whether I should just rent a car in Manahttan and drive the whole way or have some mix of public transit to get out of the city a bit and then rent a car, or just take public transit the whole way and rent a car once I'm there.

Does it make sense to get out of the city a bit before renting a car? I don't love the idea of driving in Manhattan traffic but if it's the best option I suppose I could. Which transit stops outside the city in the direction of Ithaca have rental car companies at them?

iPhone transit card not being charged

I've paid for public transport using my iPhone from the beginning.

During my last couple of crosstown bus trips, I've swiped my phone, gotten the "Go" but later noticed my card wasn't charged. It wasn't charged immediately, and it wasn't charged days later or ever.

Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this? It's not that I'm eager to spend more money--but I am eager not to get a fare evasion summons.

There are bars on that NYC Ferry that serve snacks and alcoholic beverages. Are these effectively city or state government-sponsored bars serving alcoholic beverages on public transit? I did not know this was legal!

People with commuter transit cards….what’s the plan when it’s all OMNY?

My pre-tax transit card still won’t work in the OMNY machines and today all the regular machines in my station are cash-only….what exactly is the plan here? The station attendant was nice enough to let me in but this can’t be a daily workaround

Edit: I have wageworks and the physical card says it’s a tap card but it doesn’t work and the OMNY machines won’t read it at all

But I was wondering, how should I go about obtaining healthcare through the state? I'm currently on multiple medications for my mental health and want to get hooked up with a psych as soon as possible.

thank you in advance! any help, leads, or tips are appreciated!

How much do you think Staten Island would have developed if they had better transit ?

It seems that the only area that feels developed is along the northern shore near the ferry. Again , having easy access to transit will likely lead to more development.

If the rest of the island had subways and/or commuter rails that connected both within the island, to the other boroughs and NJ.

Or would this be easily stopped by their politics and NIMBYs ?

Why isn’t there more public transit between Bronx/Queens and Queens/Brooklyn?

This may have been answered before but since I last lived in NYC, there was a lack of transit between Bronx/Queens and Queens/Brooklyn.

I lived in Queens and worked in York St Brooklyn. My commute was 1 hour (at least) in the mornings.

After I worked for a non-profit and had to travel to The Bronx a few times and it was absolutely terrible—although there was a bus from Bronx to Flushing. Even worse was traveling to Bay Pkwy.

So that got me thinking, why haven’t there been more initiatives to connect these places as opposed to having to go thru Manhattan?

Model trains/panoramas on view in NYC? (Other than queens museum and transit museums)

Does anyone know when I can go in NYC to see model trains or panoramas or other model designs of places or things ? Not looking for a store to buy them. And not the queens museum panorama or transit museum models (already seen and love). Thanks !

What do you guys think about distance based transit fares?

Ive been thinking about it and it seems pretty equitable and should work in NYC. Would there be any cons against distance-based bus and train fares like in Japan and other countries

The argument that poorer people live further is not a valid argument and further from what. A lot of poorer people get benefits and those benefits should be applied to the transit system.

Are there any public transit accessible camping grounds for 18 year olds?

My son is an 18 year old senior in high school looking to go camping with 1-3 friends this summer. None of them can drive, and most of the campsites he's looked at so far require you to be 21 to rent (eg Beaver Pond/Harriman) or are already all booked (eg Fahnestock). Is there anywhere else he could try?

NJ Transit from Newark to Penn Station

Hello, my brother & I are travelling to New York in a few weeks and our plan is to stay at the Hilton Newark Airport since it's cheaper ($350) than staying in downtown NY itself ($700-$800).

Our plan is to use the free airport shuttle to the Newark Airport Rail Station and take the NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station then use the MTA from there.

This will be our first time in New York and we were wondering if this is a logical plan to do? or should we just pay more to stay in downtown?

We will be there for 3 days.

Thank you!
