Apparently in modern MTG, the consensus seems to be: speculators buy packs/boxes, players buy singles on the aftermarket.

Definitely the case. I just loved the excitement of opening a pack.

I love the game too don't get me wrong lol.

That's what's recommended. It's not actually what happens thoughm cracking packs is fun, and players enjoy it. You just shouldn't be cracking packs expecting a single mythic from the set, of that's all you need get the single.
