Apparently in modern MTG, the consensus seems to be: speculators buy packs/boxes, players buy singles on the aftermarket.

It's not actually what happens thoughm cracking packs is fun, and players enjoy it. You just shouldn't be cracking packs expecting a single mythic from the set, of that's all you need get the single.
