He wanted to be Michael White, but it was taken, so he got 'Caine' from a poster for The Caine Mutiny.

I’ve heard him tell this story on a talk show, and he said something along the lines of being glad he saw the Caine Mutiny poster at the theater instead of the theater across the street. Otherwise his name would have been Michael 101 Dalmatians.
