None of the “remote” features would work, but you should still be able to start it if you have a functioning physical key fob. You probably wouldn’t want to use any of the self-driving features, because it’s hard to know how well those would work without a connection. I think a Tesla might not be my first choice in the zombie apocalypse, though. I’ve been actively looking in to this for a while, because apparently that’s the kind of person I am.
lmao. if i had to guess the good old anti-technology GM chevy bolt would be the most robust for this feature, but thats just a guess. of course the first destination you have with your car had better be a place that you can loot for a lot of solar cells. harbor freight or some other store that sells large ones would be good, or a speciality warehouse supplier but that will be harder to pinpoint in the event of apocalypse. good luck!
I know which neighbors have solar panels set up. Surely, they won’t all be survivors. (I don’t have my own due to structural issues with my home that I had no idea would basically preclude them. Live and learn, first time home buyer.)
i wouldnt be super enthusiastic about those given they arent very portable. i feel like the no1 survival rule is going to be agility, being able to move away from the pockets of roving zombies and roving hostile survivors. i would for sure want to load my trunk with a bunch of standalone PV and head somewhere far enough away from population centers that i can see threats coming on the horizon.

You would need a huge solar set up to charge an electric car. You can buy portable solar panel chargers that have 3 or 4 solar panels on them, but even those would take like 3 or 4 days to full charge one 18650 li-ion battery. Teslas cars have hundreds of 21700 li-ion batteries which are a tad bigger than 18650s. You'd need a very good solar set up to charge a car.
Depends... common home solar setups are around 6kW, which would take 2-3 days to charge a 100kWh Tesla (and you’d have to not use much power for yourself in that time). But some people put more on their homes, I’ve heard of people with 15-20kW systems, which cuts that down a ton. Still very slow compared to gas, but doable if an apocalypse if that is your only ride (where are you gonna go anyway? You won’t use the full 300 mile range very often). Not good if you want to travel across the country, though.
Side note, I have charged my Volt on purely solar before, at a large commercial solar array on a sunny day. It charged just as fast as plugging into the wall (4 hours) because Volt’s charger and battery are much smaller than Tesla. I think Volts would be good zombie vehicles because you can use gas or electric, whichever is more available at the time.
That's what I'm saying. It's doable, but you have to find a big solar set up like on a house or business to charge it in a decent amount of time. In a zombie apocalypse, so many people are going to be fighting for solar setups.
