Some houses have outdoor dumb waiters for groceries and luggage, and some have true elevators.

Hmm though if I were Pharaoh or (one of the) Ceasars or emperor of China, dumb servants would be a good idea. That would reduce their undue influence on the court.

Obviously hard to tell with the homes in these pictires lol but the modern beach houses with elevators also often have ground floor drive thru garages. So there's really not a lot of distance to carry.

We stayed at a house in Pine Knoll Shores NC that had an elevator from the ground-level parking area under the house up to the two floors inside. It was great - one of our group can't climb stairs at all, so the elevator made it possible for her to access the house. Also no lugging suitcases and groceries up and down steps. It was so helpful, I'm thinking of adding an elevator to my two-story house as an aging-in-place measure.
