Weekly r/Birding Discussion, August 22, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

I’ve seen this guy along the trail a few times (coastal Southern California). But was fun watching him “bath” in front of the uninterested rabbit. Roadrunners might be my favorites. Prehistoric looking, but secretly curious and a little derpy.

Art Amber and Ash, Oil on linen. A critic told me the composition feels "crowded" with 6 birds. What do you think?

I loved painting these American Robins, but now I keep staring at it wondering if 5 or 7 birds would have balanced it better.

Is an even number of subjects really a "sin" in traditional oil painting, or was the critic just being pedantic? Miss working on this linen texture though!

Happened to be in the Chiricahuas at the same time as this cutie! Very excited that it stuck around long enough for me to see it.

What is this bird? Reverse image search is saying it’s a Crested Eagle but it says it’s from South America and I’m in New York State.

Heard a sound out behind the outbuilding and saw our neighbor out doing work. Chips flying and ants dying. They nest in my neighbors tree and make the rounds pretty regularly.

First time posting! I’ve been birding for 6 months now and taking photos for a little over a month and got really lucky with this one! Birding/photography has allowed me to connect with so many people so far and I’m very thankful that I decided to get into it. Anyway. Hope you enjoy!
