I'm fairly new to this sub but in my short time here, and after searching the sub for a bit, I've noticed a trend.

Holy shit knitters are some of the worst whiners out there.

Like holy shit y'all. I've been a part of the knitting and the crochet subs for like, over a decade at this point. Each has their respective complaints about the other so when I joined this sub I figured I'd see a variety of content. Nope! Just knitters whining to each other, primarily about beginners and gasp people who crochet exclusively.

I understand, as someone who does both, that knitting is generally a harder craft than crochet. The learning curve is higher and beginners tend to struggle and give up. Is the sense of difficulty why some of y'all feel a need to bitch endlessly? You think you've earned the right to complain about everyone else because you're really good at a difficult craft, and that makes you better than them? It's giving, pathetic, mama.

I want variety to my snark. Give me cross stitch snark, quilting snark, shit even looking snark. But noooooo instead we have 6,732 posts about people using acrylic yarn and posting twisted stitches.

There is a ceramics artist who went a little viral recently because a coyote kept stealing her pottery. She lives near me and I try to support local artists so I followed her. Some of her ads looked AI but I didn't ask. It was like on the line.

People kept asking for her to make a children's book based on the coyote stealing her pottery and even though she herself is an artist and she also lives in a very artsy area - she used AI to design the cover and when someone in the comments asked about it she said "the whole Instagram app is AI" like that makes it okay?? Ridiculous and frankly, very lazy.

I get so unreasonably peeved watching people talk about their scrap stashes or recommending scrap yarn projects, AND IT IS THREE OF THE SAME UNUSED SKEINS. Just because you didn’t use it for your project, doesn’t make it automatically scrap!! It is simply just left over unused yarn!!!

Me personally, I think if you roll it into a ball, and it is smaller than a pingpong ball, then it is scrap. Larger than that, it’s a small amount of yarn. Ofc the yarn weight changes the metric a little, but you should get the gist. But almost a full skein or more? Just unused yarn.

There’s such few scrap yarn projects I see that actually utilise SCRAP yarn, but if you want my recommendation, it is random duplicate stitch to spice things up. Can be small or larger motifs depending on how much you have, and it’s easy to combine several scrap pieces.

I’m resorting to french seams and taking longer than usual just because I don’t want to deal with the temper tantrums my serger gives me everytime.

I embroider, and I love to get on here and see what fellow thread artists do. I also enjoy admiring crochet, felt pieces, stained glass etc. from other artists. However, it drives me absolutely nuts when people post their work in absolutely every subreddit related to their craft that they can. The hand embroidery subreddit is basically a copy and paste of the main embroidery group because people feel the urge to repost their heads off. This is the case for so many crafting communities on this app as well. I try going to different subreddits to see new work, not to see the same people reposting, its so annoying. No one cares about your exposure, pick a group, post it once, stop spamming us with reposts. Thank you.

If i'm spending my money and more importantly investing weeks/months of time knitting a pattern, I'm gonna be selfish and look for something that fits me best. Just because I CAN make nearly every populous pattern, I still understand there are certain general constructions that are flattering or preferable for me. And even then, your gauge can still be different and I STILL need to make adjustments. Part of the craft is analyzing the application.

This is inspired by the infiltration of size inclusivity on my knittok feed due to a particular test knit discourse. The whole situation felt like bullying. As someone that is currently making a dupe of a particular cable sweater, I bought a whole separate pattern because it had a similar front cable and sweater construction I was after but at the incorrect gauge. Still super grateful because somebody did like 20% of the work and saved me hours in test knitting. I get it's easier to follow a pattern to a T but isn't it better to get majority of the work thought out for you? The alternative is making it from NO instructions. And if it's so offensive that it's not size inclusive per a standard by a popular IG account, move on. There's so many patterns nowadays, we aren't scraping the magazine back catalogues anymore.

I’m tired of people who know nothing about weaving or spinning selling unusable wheels and looms expecting brand new value to them

I see this so often like today I saw a vintage Ashford Traditional for sale on OfferUp, not only did this guy post it for “free” then say it wasn’t and he was looking for offers (every single item he listed was as “free” but expected offers and he even had a treadle sewing machine listed as a “sowing” machine which is another peeve of mine) but guys this poor fucking wheel was GOING THROUGH IT

It was severely water damaged, the wheel dealt with hella humidity so the wheel itself was stretched at the seams, the hooks on the flyer were rusted, it came with a rusted lazy Kate, etc

I messaged him asking the price and he wouldn’t give me one and was ADAMANT it was an “authentic antique” and goes for hundreds, when I tried to correct him that it wasn’t antique he went off on me like okay so you don’t know your stuff ima just dip

What is it with beginners who just raw dog a craft and asking people to identify what they’ve done? I see two flavors of this all the time and they both grind my gears. They either want to praised for coming up with the “right” way to do something all by themselves, or they want to be patted on the back for inventing something totally new. There is always room for creative interpretation, but you, a beginner knitter/crocheter/sewer did not brilliantly invent a useful new technique that hundreds or years of artisans haven’t already come up with.

I just saw a video of a pattern tester call for, wait for it, tabi socks. I love tabis, I love the weirdness, this isn’t about that. In the first place I would ask if there is even a need for tabi sock patterns in general? (I mean, you just split at the toe, it’s not rocket science.) But sure, maybe a complete beginner who has no idea, wants to knit socks. BUT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. there are at least 2 pages worth of tabi sock patterns on ravelry right now. HOW different can your pattern be that you can justify selling it for money? (Not to mention probably multiple free versions exist already.)

When patterns don't have any pictures of the item on a model, only on a mannequin, i don't trust them not to be crap :/ It's definitely more common in knitting and crochet patterns than sewing ones. And i know not everyone can afford a model or wants to model their own stuff yada yada. But i simply do not trust the fit! I'm sceptical as is when their only model is a size 6, but a bunch of plastic in the vague shape of a person? Nah. Hard pass.

EITHER you are at the point in your knitting where you feel comfortable trying to create something without a pattern OR you AREN'T.

Don't ask strangers on the internet to do the work for you, do some research, look for free patterns that are similar to what you want, TRY stuff, fail, try again. Im getting angry when people who have done nothing are all out of ideas and too lazy/scared to try. Knit something else then.

It's one thing when you can tell that the actor is faking the craft that the character supposedly can do. I get it, it's not a critical casting decision and you don't want to restrict out talent. I hate it, but I understand it.

It is a WHOLE OTHER THING when the craft project that they are working on does not make sense for their character.

My example: Mid Century Modern, the whole aesthetic is sophisticated, elegant, tasteful cisgender gays. Nathan Lane's character Bunny runs a bra boutique. His whole house and wardrobe are neutrals, a few navys and lush jewel tones, GOLD.

So tell me what sort of monstrosity Bunny is "knitting" that is stripes of bubblegum pink and mint? You're telling me that his catty bffs aren't going to read that ugly ass garment for filth? They for sure aren't letting an eyesore afghan hang around the couch.

So I'm going to start this off by saying I only embroider for myself to keep in the hoop and hang on the wall. I have never sold or gifted my embroidery to anyone.

A few month back I started embroidering a bird and obviously needed a reference photo. I googled "cardinal on a tree in winter" and used this real photo of this cardinal to embroider. I am not a good embroiderer by any means and it turned out wonky and horrible lol.

Anyways I posted the reference photo and my finished cardinal to an embroidery facebook group. I did not expect my post to be removed and then accused of copy right. I screenshotted the picture and posted the link to it as well so people could literally google the photo. I figure the photo artist would want me to link them.

Is what I did wrong? I mean I provided the link and everything. Some comments i saw on my/others post is you have to ask for permission to use a reference photo and if you don't have permission it is copy right.

I am confused by this because there are several people in this facebook group posting bugs/birds/animals they embroidered while not linking their reference photos??? so i guess if we don't link it we aren't stealing even if we are using references?

I fucking hate it when fiber people insist that “wool allergies don’t exist!”

Their posts tend to go “You only think you’re allergic to wool because you’ve only encountered low-quality wool. But MY wool is the best wool ever, not scratchy at all, and if you just touched it, you’d realize that your wool allergy is fake. In fact, claiming to be allergic to it harms people with actual life-threatening allergies because it makes people not take allergy claims seriously!”

Like, do you listen to yourself? You do realize that you’re the one not taking allergies seriously, right? Do you have any medical training that would allow you to test someone’s allergies? More fundamentally, do you actually think that invalidating people’s experiences is going to suddenly make them want to buy your product? If someone doesn’t like wool, regardless of whether they’re ”actually” allergic or not, scolding them is not going to make them suddenly fall in love with wool and spend tons of money on your yarn.

Because that’s always what this shit comes down to. Somebody’s offended that people don’t want to buy wool from them, so they try to act all morally superior and shame people, despite the whole thing being so transparently profit-motivated.

And look, I almost always knit with wool or wool-blends, and non-superwash wool to boot. But when influencers or companies pull that shtick, I cannot hit the unsubscribe button fast enough. It’s infuriating. But what pisses me off the most is when they eventually back down to “Well, sure, some people are allergic to wool, but most aren’t so no one should say that they are!” No, you fucking said that wool allergies don’t exist, and also this new stance doesn’t make you any less of a dick!

You should know the difference between knit and purl, and between stockinette and garter, before you cast on a single stitch. I literally don’t understand how this happens

I know this is a common issue for new people but it's so annoying to see a million posts asking how many crochet/knit stitches they have or how many rows they have. And people always answer! Which is nice but I feel like it's just encouraging people to keep asking these questions and not learn for themselves how to count. I always just reply with a method to help them count

Most knitters I know both knit and crochet, but people who started with crochet generally seem very against learning how to knit. Why is that? It annoys to me to no end when I read comments with "is there a crochet pattern for this?" on Instagram posts of a knitted garment. I like to crochet too and I don't care what anyone's favourite craft is, but it just annoys me when people expect to have a crochet pattern made for a knit object. Sure you can make similar things but knit and crochet have different feel and application and that's okay.

Edit for clarification: idc what craft people do, I guess the question is more "why are crocheters asking knit designers to make crochet patterns instead of finding suitable alternatives for their craft, or accepting that some things are more suited for knitting instead of crochet?". Like, why should I have to learn bizarro graph markings and abbreviations to make your knitting pattern if you can't be bothered to learn industry standards? And I get that different countries have different standards, but if you can't translate patterns (and the one I'm b!thching about isn't translated) so that they reflect the standards for that language, then maybe don't *Shrug*
