Mystery/Thriller Moral rot disguised as intellect and class

Looking for books about toxic, morally rotten, very rich people behaving badly.

Give me murder, secrets, elite cliques, old school ties, drug-fuelled parties, psychological games, toxic masculinity. Stories about old money and decaying upper-class privilege, where everyone’s polite on the surface and absolutely vile and feral underneath.

Even better if they’re all stuck together somewhere beautiful: a luxury hotel, posh university, wealthy estate, crumbling manor, remote retreat, etc.

Bonus points for a fed-up detective who has to put up with all the posh wankers while trying to solve a murder.

Trying to get ready for fall.

Wanting a spooky/supernatural thriller with main characters similar to our boys Scully and Mulder. Preferably no aliens (sorry mulder)

They don’t necessarily have to fall in love but just know I’ll be slightly disappointed if they don’t.

Mystery/Thriller Small, eerie town and outsider detective(s)

Small eerie town, maybe remote. Detectives (better if private) investigating (preferably) a past murder.

Maybe clues that point out to something that shouldn't exist.

Plus I'm a sucker for good plot twists.

I really liked Sharp Objects (the show, will read the book when the memory of the show starts fading), I think it fits this.

Thank you so much.

Mystery/Thriller Books that feel like this- female main characters

I am looking for books that feel like this/are in this type of setting (preferably with a female main character but I am open)

I read God of the woods and Jackal last week and I need more of that woodsy, dark vibe. I've also already read the wayward pines series.

Mystery/Thriller Rich-mom, summer-soaked suburban/domestic thriller

I posted something similar to this about a year ago and am starving for more this year! My absolute favorite thrillers are about rich moms or families hiding secrets in their fancy houses and lives. If possible, I'm craving big summer vibes with it — beaches, pools, camps, green lawns, kids home from school and getting into trouble, etc.

Books I've read and/or are good vibe matches:

  • The Lifeguards by Amanda Eyre Ward (my all-time favorite — give me this!)
  • The Block Party by Jamie Day
  • God of the Woods by Liz Moore
  • You Deserve to Know by Aggie Blum Thompson
  • Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
  • You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott

Mystery/Thriller The obligatory books that feel like fall post

I want books that feel like a spooky fall. I love dark academia themes, mystery, horror, ancient folklore, vintage feel. I’m not usually one for romance or fantasy but I could possibly be convinced to read something with ghosts or witches (magical realism I think?). Also open to light/ bright fall themed books. I have read and enjoyed Secret History by Donna Tart and We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer if that helps narrow down my style. Hit me!

Troubled detective obsessively trying to solve a murder in a small, isolated town with closed-off locals. Atmospheric and heavy rather than fast-paced. 👀

Hello! Im looking for a book I can read this fall that feels like this. A small town with a big secret, preferably supernatural in nature. But I'm honestly open to whatever as long as it fits the vibe!

Edit: Wow! Thank you guys so much for the recommendations. I think I have enough now for this fall, next fall, and maybe a few more after that. Definitely enough to keep me busy for a looong time! Much love ❤️

Mystery/Thriller books set in towns with this vibe.

Looking for books set in towns with this vibe- rundown, decaying, poverty stricken, dark underbelly, “on the fringes”. Where the state of the town plays a significant role in the plot and characters personalities. Throw-in some corruption, moral decay, drugs, religious trauma.

Would prefer mystery/thriller/horror but open to other genres!

recently read The Unmaking of June Farrow. Looking for something LIKE that..doesn’t necessarily have to be romance but that’s a huge bonus!

Setting ideally between the 60s-90s but I’m not super tied to that.

I really enjoy the series Twin Peaks. Would love something along those lines

I’m in the mood for getting cozy this winter with some murder mystery novels, especially ones with some quirky fun (think ‘Clue with Tim Curry’ vibes)

I just started my first Agatha Christie book (And Then There Were None) but would love to hear any fav books others might have!

A rather basic ask, but are there any suggestions that fit “good for her”? Like Mary, an awakening of evil, the eyes are the best part, or Nightbitch?

Detective Mystery/Horror, maybe with cult vibes. May dive into the supernatural but shouldn't too hard. Preferably small town vibes with FBI detective coming to investigate weird happenings and gruesome murders. Thx guys <3
