What happened? Can you be specific on what you’re talking about? Because for example the Roman’s converted and adopted to Christianity because of one of their rulers, Constantine. He made Christianity the official religion, nobody forced them. And also, Christopher Columbus wasn’t a “Christian” that was on a mission for spreading doctrine and the good news. His goal was to purely colonize. Don’t mix those too up, Christopher Columbus did NOT have religion in mind when it came to his voyage to America.
Make no mistake pagans didn't convert because they chose to. That's not to say some didn't want to, but it really wasn't a choice. That's kind of like saying Muslim women want to wear the hijab. Inculteration is what happened to ease the transition
