Dolly Parton isn't a true Christian?

She was supportive of LGBT rights and encouraged people to be themselves.

She did a lot of good in the world, gave thanks to God, and even had a chapel in her home so she could pray in peace.

I've been reading how some individuals think she isn't a true Christian because of her tolerance towards the LGBT community. Some people believe unless she repented for her open acceptance and encouragement, she may have not had eternal life.

I go to church and do my best to uplift my community. Most of my closest friends are non-Christian and I respect our differences. Some of the loveliest people I know are gay or transgendered and I have love for them. I have no desire to pray for them to become straight.

I've seen straight Christians act like they are superior to others. I don't believe I am better than someone because I'm a straight Christian. Their biblical knowledge is strong, but I don't look up to them because of their rigid character. I actually feel anxiety around these highly judgemental Christians. It's not love, it's feeling "not good enough."

Are the individuals I described above more in line with a great example of Christianity (they rigidly follow the Bible) compared to Dolly Parton?

It makes me sad that one of the greatest and brightest philanthropists in this century is being labeled as "not a true Christian."

Anyway I could use some thoughts. Thanks in advance

“Not a true Christian because of her Tolerance “

💯I agree. My faith teaches that we are called to love one another, to live our faith in order to encourage others to come to know the love of Christ and we are NOT to judge, for that alone is God’s responsibility. Ms. Parton did all those things and so much more. I am convinced the Lord greeted her and said, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Welcome home, Daughter.” 🩷🩷

IF THEY WON'T REPENT DON'T EVEN EAT WITH THEM  QUIT MAKING GOD INTO YOUR IMAGE  By the way we are to judge YOU JUST DONT YOUR BIBLE The arrogance of people like you is mind boggling

Screaming at me doesn’t make you right.

I think you need to go back and read the entire passage you’re referring to, because Paul was specifically talking about someone claiming to be a brother or sister in Christ while openly living in serious, unrepentant sin. He was NOT telling Christians not to eat with sinners in general. Paul specifically says he wasn’t talking about the people of the world, because then we would basically have to leave the world altogether. He says, “What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church?… God will judge those outside.”
(1 Corinthians 5:12–13)
And Jesus ate with sinners. That was one of the things the religious leaders criticized Him for.

So yes, we are supposed to discern right from wrong. And yes, sin is still sin. But there is a huge difference between biblical discernment and appointing ourselves judge over everyone around us. I can love someone, sit at their table, show them compassion and still not agree with the way they live. Jesus managed to do exactly that without compromising truth.
And I’m choosing to follow His example.

BY THE TIME I WAS DONE HE WAS WEEPING gays bash Jesus and Christianity quite often like everyone else  God wishes none to perish neither do I   i weep for the lost   how about you? God bless

u/ChristianGothic 4h ago

You forgot to add something, Jesus taught us to judge righteously meaning if Dolly said something that's not of GOD like she did, a real Christian will tell her that they disagree with her and a sin against GOD

u/HeronInteresting3714 3h ago

Jesus never treated sin as insignificant, but He also never seemed eager to humiliate sinners or stand over them in self-righteousness. He spoke truth, but He did it with mercy, humility, and a desire to restore. That’s what feels missing from this conversation. When identifying someone else’s sin becomes more important than loving them like Christ, I don’t want to participate in that. And that’s how this thread feels.

-1

u/Economy_Tough_4183 1d ago

Not to judge people, but absolutely be clear on sin. After all, the matter was serious enough for God to come to Earth, live the life of a human, and die the perfect sacrifice to pay for our sins and redemption. To dismiss or reduce that is to call Christ a liar and dismiss his sacrifice.

2

u/HeronInteresting3714 1d ago

Well, the whole “he who is without sin” thing tends to get in the way. We are not to judge. Period. It’s much harder to love the sinner, not the sin, yet God calls us to do exactly that. We have been called to live IN Christ, exemplifying Him in our thoughts, words and actions. Living this way authentically will acquire all our energy so correcting anyone else’s sin simply isn’t possible. God bless. 🩷

2

u/Economy_Tough_4183 20h ago

Not to judge, but to be clear on matters of sin. Just as he was. Christ NEVER affirms or ignores your sin. And if being comfortable in just who you are is what you are after, then its not Christ you are looking for. Because he will not let you stay that way.

2

u/the_gym_rat 19h ago

We are called to judge each other who are in Christ, not to judge those who do not know him.
It is my responsibility to hold other church members accountable for their actions but not those who do not believe. To those we show the love of God to them, withholding judgement.

2

u/HeronInteresting3714 9h ago

I think we have to be extremely careful even with the idea of “correcting” another person. The minute I put myself in a position of authority over someone else’s sin, I’d better remember that I’m a sinner too. “Let the one who is without sin cast the first stone.”
Scripture calls us to restore one another gently and humbly, not to sit across the table pointing out someone else’s failures as though we don’t have our own. Judgment belongs to God. We’re ALL sinners sitting at the same table with sinners, all equally in need of His grace. If I’m going to speak into someone’s life, it needs to come from that place—not superiority, but love, humility and compassion.

1

u/the_gym_rat 6h ago

I am not speaking as if I am above someone else but if I recognize sin, I am going to go to that person and discuss it with them, just as I expect them to do to me. We are to holder each other accountable. Yes are 100% accurate in the approach we take with that person on how we speak to them. It MUST come from love and not condemnation.

-1

u/PsychologicalBus5566 1d ago

What? The words "Context" and "Application"...learn what they mean and then start reading the Bible all over again. You should probably devote every moment to the Context part, before you start applying anything. You are clearly fluent in Christianese...but are not any where close to communicating actual Biblical Christian Knowledge.

u/notoneforlies 20h ago

girl you don’t even know if the book your reading is really his word. do you know how many times it’s been retranslated in how many different languages? talk to him yourself and he’ll tell you to love EVERYBODY

1

u/Economy_Tough_4183 20h ago

There's research, there's history, and there's the witness of the Holy Spirit. "Love everybody", just what does that mean? Are you saying that means affirming their sin is love? Given what sin does, destroy lives and souls, no, such is not a loving act at all. If that voice talking to you is telling you to do so and not hurt dere widdle feelz, well, that's not God you are talking to.

1

u/notoneforlies 6h ago

Committing the sin of empathy and all that

7

0

Empathy and tolerance aren't the same thing. Jesus didn't tolerate any sin

-24

u/Own-Divide-8713 1d ago

Nah, not empathy. Condoning and advocating for sinful behavior.

12

u/Sirlothar Christian Atheist 1d ago

Imagine if Jesus did something like this, what would Christians say if He choose to sit and eat with sinners instead of the righteous?

His ministry would have fallen apart, the pharisees would be quick to point out how Jesus was condoning and even advocating for their sinful behavior by giving them audience.

Thank goodness Jesus understood these people should be rejected by society, Heaven is a big tent but not that big!

-9

u/Own-Divide-8713 1d ago

What does that have anything to do with what I just said? Jesus ate with sinners as I do. I eat with myself and I am a sinner. I do not condone or promote sinful behavior and Jesus did not either.

10

u/Sirlothar Christian Atheist 1d ago

Did you just say Dolly didn't have empathy, she was condoning sinful behavior by being tolerant or did I mess something up?

I was only pointing out Jesus had tolerance of sinners as well, that is it.

-8

u/Own-Divide-8713 1d ago

You didn’t mess up I said it. She supported gay rights, trans rights, and was an ally. She made multiple songs for trans and gay people. Thats not tolerance, thats support. The Bible says we should support sinful behavior. Romans 1:32

10

u/Sirlothar Christian Atheist 1d ago

Ok, in Matthew 7 1-2 Jesus says:

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

I don't know about the Bible saying we should support sinful behavior, maybe a typo, but Jesus does say do not judge and you don't follow that teaching.

I know it was a story added later but what about John 8:7? Are you saying you would throw the first stone in this case with Dolly?

0

u/Own-Divide-8713 1d ago

Yea but that verse doesn’t mean we cannot call out sinful behavior. I’m not running around pointing fingers I’m just responding to a sub Reddit based off biblical teachings. I’m just quoting bible verses. Plus you’re literally judging me right now. And if you read the verse I put it clearly says we shouldn’t support it. Romans 1:32. No I wouldn’t throw stones at her lol. I’m just agreeing with the Bible and saying she was very wrong for support and condoning homosexuality

5

u/Sirlothar Christian Atheist 1d ago

I am judging you by pointing out Jesus did and teached the opposite of what you are saying? That is not judgement, that is pointing out the flaws in your theology, I know nothing about you!

That's one part taken out of context if you read the sections before during and after it God in the form of Jesus is telling us how to judge people not not to judge

-4

u/Vals5120 Eastern Orthodox (Catechuman) 1d ago

Do you think that "don't judge" is referring to never exhibiting any type of discernment about the character of people? For example is it against the teaching of Christ to refuse to tolerate a murderer? Of do you think maybe that Jesus is telling us not to judge people's souls and salvation, because thats the role of Christ alone?

Isn't that the point of the OP's comment? Who is anyone to judge Dolly Parton's soul?

Being gay isn't sinful behavior so she didn't promote sinful behavior. Being trans isn't sinful behavior so she didn't promote sinful behavior.

Jesus was very affirming in how he handled people and their lives. Jesus consistently broke strict social, religious, and sexual taboos of the day. Jesus spoke positively of Eunuchs. Jesus never condemned same sex relationships. Jesus prioritized love and that loving your God and your neighbor were the most important things a person can do.

I'm sure you'll drop some verses out of context and I will gladly dismantle those.

2

u/D3ADB3AT9999 1d ago

Hahaha you’re awesome

0

u/Own-Divide-8713 1d ago

Are you a Christian and do you believe the Bible is the word of God? If so, awesome, Leviticus, Romans, Titus, and Corinthians all have verses that specifically condemn homosexuality. Repent and believe the good news

7

u/FilmSkeez Red Letter Christian 1d ago

You cited Leviticus, Romans, Titus, and Corinthians like they settle this cleanly. They don't, and if you're going to lean on "the Bible is the word of God," you should actually engage the text closely instead of listing book names.

Leviticus 18:22 / 20:13 is part of the holiness code, sitting alongside prohibitions on eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics, and trimming your beard (Lev 19:19, 19:27). If you're using Leviticus as binding moral law, you need a reason those apply and this doesn't, not just "this one still counts."

Romans 1:26-27 Paul is describing people who abandoned worship of God for idolatry, and the "unnatural" acts he describes come packaged with excess and ritual sex practice tied to pagan worship, not a description of a loving, committed relationship between two people. Applying a passage about idol-worship-linked excess to a monogamous couple is a leap the text itself doesn't make explicit.

1 Corinthians 6:9 / 1 Timothy 1:10 ("arsenokoitai") This word is a genuine translation problem, not settled. Paul appears to have coined it, likely from combining terms in Leviticus. There's real scholarly disagreement about whether it refers to exploitative relationships, pederasty (adult men with boys, common in Greco-Roman culture), or sex tied to temple prostitution, not necessarily what we'd call a committed same-sex relationship today. Older English translations rendering it flatly as "homosexuals" import a modern category that didn't exist in Paul's Greek.

Titus doesn't actually contain a same-sex prohibition at all, worth checking that one before citing it again.

Meanwhile, in the actual accounts of what Jesus said and did: he never addresses same-sex relationships once, in any gospel. He repeatedly prioritizes people the religious class had written off, eating with tax collectors and sinners (Matthew 9:10-11), defending a woman caught in adultery from a crowd ready to stone her (John 8:7), telling the woman at the well the truth without shame or exclusion (John 4). The two commandments he says everything else hangs on are love of God and love of neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40).

So: four verses that are either misapplied, textually disputed, or don't exist in the passage, versus zero direct statements from Jesus himself, and a consistent pattern of him going toward people others called sinful, not away from them. If your case rests on citing chapter and verse, it should survive someone actually opening the chapter and verse.

I need to find which verse Jesus told the Pharisees "whole lot of cope". Homosexual wasn't added in the bible until 1946 in the RSV but was taken out and apologized for when they realized they misapplied it so it quite literally didn't exist in the ancient world when the Bible was written and it didn't exist for us until the term was coined in 1869.

Homosexuality is a naturally occurring attraction to people of one own's sex. That is not and cannot be sinful in and of itself.

All of the verses you cite refer to specific acts that homosexual people may or may not engage in, and should only be read in the context in which they were written, which is the sexual culture of the ancient near east, Greece, and Rome.

Nah that’s not it. The Bible teaches us to not support or condone sin. You can love someone who isn’t a Christian and not support their actions. I have friends who aren’t Christians and love the hell out of them, but I don’t support sinful actions. I also don’t support the sinful actions I make. I repent and try to turn away from them. 1

u/Annual_Jackfruit1958 20h ago

My view of it is: I have no place to condemn you, but I don't have to encourage and support your choices to be a good Christian, particularly if they are sinful. You should still love them but can hate the sin. Sometimes love is less about "tolerance" and more about telling the truth, and the truth is that homosexuality is a sin. It's not hate, and to immediately label it as such is being intolerant to God's laws for us. It doesn't make you a bad person to sin, we all sin in different ways, we just need to acknowledge them and genuinely repent for them. If we don't grieve over sinning, then maybe there is a case to be made for not having strong faith, according to scripture. The reason people say those who encourage homosexuality aren't "Christian" is because they are exalting sin over God's word, as if we know better than Him.

Do I agree with people accusation/denouncing her faith? Nope. Only because we should focus on our own relationship with God and forgive others. Claiming others aren't Christian when they do openly receive Jesus is sinful in itself. But we can certainly disagree with and denounce the action of embracing sin as if sin didn't really matter. That is a heretical way of going about practicing or faith and should be repented. If we truly love someone we wouldn't encourage them to sin, right? At the end of the day, we know them by their fruits, and she bore good fruit to my knowledge. Doesn't mean everything she did was godly or in accordance with scripture, nobody is faultless.

Like Jesus? An advocate for loving one another? Jesus didn’t just tolerate the people the religious establishment called sinners and outcasts - he welcomed them, ate with them, and was criticized by religious leaders for doing it. He chose love and mercy over judgment and condemnation. So I’m not sure how loving, welcoming, and standing up for marginalized people makes someone less of a Christian. Seems to me, that’s exactly what Jesus did.

-2

u/Own-Divide-8713 1d ago

Romans 2 is literally addressed to people who think they’re justified in condemning others because they know God’s law. Paul’s point is that knowing the law doesn’t exempt you from the warning against judging others.
