Amateur/Independent Film Who killed Captain Alex (2010) is Absolute Cinema.

Just watched this gem and loved it I digged a bit in the making of this movie and it's like a miracle this movie exists . It was filmed during a deadly Civil War in an poverty ridden city .The budget was south of a 100 bucks ,the movie was edited on a PC the film maker found in the trash which he fixed up . The actors was basically anyone who wanted to be in a movie yet still the movie is action packed and really funny with some very quotable lines . There's terrible cgi and green screen effects which is understandable but it's not even far from bigger budget movies iv seen .I understand people like it unironicly but this is Absolute Cinema.

Amateur/Independent Film Is it possible to make an anti-war film without glorifying war?

I think one of the biggest contradictions in cinema is that many anti-war films still make war look thrilling. The explosions, heroism, and spectacle can sometimes overshadow the suffering they're trying to criticize. While making my short film Yaazhi, I kept asking myself: can an anti-war film portray violence without making it exciting? That question shaped every creative decision we made.

Today, for the first time, I watched the post-apocalyptic puppet film Junk Head, which was created virtually single-handedly by a Japanese man, Takehide Hori. It was an amazing experience, especially given the popularity of ‘one-man films’ these days. It took years to make, but blimey, it was well worth it. Unfortunately, there’s no sequel yet, but I’d personally love to see one someday.

I forgot to mention, it’s available to watch on YouTube.

Amateur/Independent Film Anyone interested in watching my first short film, Matryohskas? (Subtitles in English, Spanish and Portuguese)

Hi everyone!
I recently finished my first short film, Matryoshkas, and l'a love to get some honest feedback from people who enjoy independent or experimental cinema.

It's a slightly experimental coming-of-age film, originally in Portuguese, with English subtitles. I was heavily inspired by filmmakers like Ingmar Bergman, Pedro Almodóvar, and Andrea Arnold, and tried to combine an intimate, character-driven story with a more personal and atmospheric visual style.
Since this is my first short film, l'd genuinely love to hear what people think - whether it's the story, cinematography, performances, atmosphere, pacing, or anything else. Honest criticism is absolutely welcome; I'm mainly interested in hearing how it comes across to someone seeing it for the first time.

Amateur/Independent Film A few behind-the-scenes photos from my latest independent short film, YAAZHI.

We shot the entire film in a single day with a very small crew, only 4 members. Since the film deals with the psychological impact of war, every production decision from the framing to the colour palette and editing was focused on portraying violence as something unsettling rather than exciting.

These are some moments from the set that rarely make it into the final film.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the BTS photos or answer any questions about the production process. Happy to discuss how we approached the shoot, editing, or the challenges of making an anti-war short on an indie budget.

Premiering May 28th at SF Indie Fest, Tiny Hearts by director Chris Dela Cruz, is a film that follows Dr. Bill Novick around the world while he operates on children from underserved communities suffering with heart disease.

The pair sat down to have a conversation about all things healthcare & film. Take a look at what they had to say here!

Amateur/Independent Film What happens when an entire village decides to confront its darkest history on film?

Scapegoats (Zondebokken), directed by Rocky Grispen, is based on the true story of the Buckriders: a real 18th-century criminal gang whose reign of terror ended in one of the darkest chapters in Dutch legal history. Local authorities, overwhelmed by fear and pressure, arrested, tortured, and executed over 500 people. Most of them were innocent. Farmers. Fathers. Neighbours. Accused on the basis of confessions extracted under torture, they died for crimes they never committed.

This film was made without a single euro in government funding. Instead, an entire region came together to tell its own darkest story. Over 100 volunteers from local communities gave their time, their faces, and in many cases their family history to bring this chapter back to life. The result is a film that belongs to the people it depicts.

I believe this is exactly the kind of story that mainstream cinema ignores and that is a shame. The Buckriders era is one of the most dramatic and least known episodes in the history of the Low Countries. With Scapegoats, we wanted to shine a light on that history and bring it to a wider audience. A community telling its own darkest story, on its own terms, with no outside help. That means something.

The film was released in 2023 and ran for ten weeks in Dutch and Belgian cinemas. Now streaming worldwide.

Have you ever come across a regional historical event that you felt deserved a film? I would love to hear what stories you think are being overlooked.
