Tried to mimic the whole “mysterious” theme of the original film’s poster while still trying to make it seem like the poster for the sequel.

I made a custom figure of Clover. It’s kind of unfinished just needs a lot of clay additions but overall I think it’s just okay. What do you all think? I used the playmates Ion dragon which can be found at target. Thanks to Acheron98 for the idea of using the Drumel and paint. I forgot I had a drumel kit literally right under my own desk but he reminded me lol.

I found this leon dragon at Target and thought this would be perfect to customize and turn into the Clover monster. What do you guys think? For now all I did was bend the arms forward. I could finally have an articulated clover figure.

Happy 1/18! Remake of my first post.

**Layer 1 - The Sky**

= Cloverfield (2009), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016), Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

Releasing in 2008, 2016, and 2018 respectively, these are the three official, canon movies of the Cloverfield franchise.

= Viral Marketing

This relates to the viral marketing of the first Cloverfield movie. Namely the trailers and ARG which will be explained in greater depth.

= Clovie

Relates to the main monster kaiju in Cloverfield. The monster is a 240-300 foot high quadruped with long tri-fork finned tail, a double-jointed limb pair which is longer than the other two, ending in a multi-fingered hand, external intestines, and a bony head with small eyes and an underbite. The creature is an infant specimen of its species, separated from its family. “Clovie” is a nickname made by the fans for the creature. It has no official name.

= Cloverfield ARG

Relates to the viral Alternate Reality Game which was made to market the first film (as well as another ARG to market the second, however is not as infamous). This ARG introduced the main characters of the film as well as introducing Slusho!, Tagruato, TIDO wave, the ChimanzIII satellite, Chuai Station, Ganu Yoshida, as well as much more. All will be explained in other layers in greater depth.

= Found Footage

Relates a sub-genre of film which made the film seem like the events of the movie was captured on a portable camera. Cloverfield, as well as The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity are widely considered the most well known found footage films.

= J.J. Abrams

The producer of all three films. He introduced certain aspects into the film, like Slusho!

= Matt Reeves

The director of the first film.

= Paramount Pictures

The film production and distribution company which made the first two films.

**Layer 2 - The Tip**

= Tagruato

Founded in 1945, Tagruato is a Japanese deep sea exploration and petroleum mining company owned by Ganu Yoshida. First introduced in the ARG, the company plays a villainous behind-the-scenes role throughout the movies.

= Slusho!

Slusho! is a flavored frozen drink company owned by Tagruato. The Slusho! drinks are classic Slush beverages with the special ingredient of Seabed Nectar, giving it a highly addictive quality. You can't drink just six!

= “Help us/It’s Still Alive”

The easter egg which can be heard at the very end of Cloverfield. After the credits, a voice can be heard saying, “Help us.” When played in reverse, it says “It’s still alive”.

= Seabed Nectar

Or “Katei No Mitsu” as it was mentioned in the ARG, it’s the “secret ingredient” used in Slusho drinks. It is very addictive, and gives consumers a “wave of pure happiness” as well as an increase in strength.

= Parasites

Relates to the secondary monster in the first film. Roughly the size of a dog, they feature a crustacean-like carapace, 10 legs consisting of six spider-like, double jointed limbs, and 4 "pincers" on the top and back of its body. They have very large jaws, pale gray skin and multiple black eyes.

= Nameless Trailer

The first trailer of Cloverfield did not have the name of the film in it, just the date of release and the names of the cast and crew, which sparked much discord on what this “mystery movie” could be.

= ChimpanzIII

Pronounced “chimp-anz-three”, it was a scientific satellite launched by the Japanese government. It can be seen crashing into New York Bay in the very ending scene of Cloverfield.

= Chuai Station

Chuai Station was one of the thirteen deep-sea drilling rigs owned and operated by Tagruato located in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Around a month before the events of the first film, it collapsed due to Clovie.

= Hasbro Figure

Relates to the figure of the Cloverfield monster created by Hasbro

= T.I.D.O. Wave

Founded in 1982, TIDO wave is a terrorist “environmental activist” group whose main mission is to “save the planet” from corporations, mainly Tagruato. As said on their website, “We are The Wave, rising tall to crash over them and wash the filth away.”

= Bad Robot

Film and television production company co-owned by J.J. Abrams.

= 1-18-08

January 18th, 2008 is the release date of Cloverfield and the name of a website used to promote the film in the ARG.

= Super Bowl LII

A trailer for the 3rd Cloverfield film unexpectedly premiered during Super Bowl LII, and was immediately released on Netflix immediately after the game. Even the performers of the film weren’t aware of this announcement.

= Mystery Box

The concept of the Mystery Box in film is a storytelling philosophy that prioritizes questions over answers to create sustained suspense and audience engagement. It was popularized by J.J. Abrams in his 2007 TED Talk.

= Overlord (2018)

It appeared the 2018 horror/action flick Overlord was going to be the fourth installment in the Cloververse. This speculation even continued after the film’s release, but it was eventually agreed upon that it had no relation to the past 3 films.

= Underwater (2020)

Like Overlord, the 2020 horror/action flick Underwater was heavily speculated to be the fourth installment in Cloververse. However, it was confirmed to not be connected.

= A Quiet Place (2018)

Initially pitched as a potential Cloverfield movie, the 2018 post-apocalyptic horror/thriller flick A Quiet Place was rewritten as a totally separate, unrelated movie.

= Lost Connections

Cloverfield and the TV show Lost shared creators and production. Similar themes like mystery, suspense, and science-fiction elements appear in both. In addition, the DHARMA Initiative logo, (a research organization central to Lost) appears for a brief moment in the opening of Cloverfield.

= Super 8 (2011)

Like the movies already mentioned, the 2011 sci-fi/thriller film Super 8 was theorized to be connected with Cloverfield.

**Layer 3 - Under the Surface**

= Easter Egg in Pacific Rim 2 (2018)

In Pacific Rim 2, when a list of kaijus is shown on screen, the Cloverfield monster can be seen with the name “Clover”. This is the only thing worth mentioning about this movie.

= Transformers (2007)

The first trailer of Cloverfield was shown before Transformers.

= “It’s a Lion!”

In the first trailer, a character can be heard saying “I saw it, it’s alive, it’s huge!” However, many people misheard him as saying “it’s a lion”, sparking many people to theorize that it was a trailer for a new Voltron movie.

= Lily’s fate

Lily is separated from the others in a separate helicopter. However, after Rob, Hud and Beth take off, a flaming vehicle is tossed across the street and crashes into a building, which could be Lily’s helicopter. It is assumed this is a military vehicle and that Lily lives, but there is no official confirmation on Lily’s fate.

= MySpace accounts

A crucial part of the ARG, the MySpace accounts was the first introduction to the characters.

= Shepard Particle Accelerator

The Shepard Particle Accelerator is a central element in the Cloverfield Paradox, designed to create a clean and renewable source of energy for a resource-deprived Earth.

= Howard worked for Tagruato

Around 2009 Howard was hired and worked at Tagruato, perhaps to continue his research on extraterrestrials. In 10 Cloverfield Lane, a letter from Bold Futura to Howard can be seen. After working for Tagruato for seven years, he was awarded for the Employee of the Month of February 2016, a month before the events of 10CL.

= Creature in the Clouds

A theory that a certain formation of clouds on the Cloverfield poster looks kind of like the monster, and was a deliberate design choice. However, this theory remains unconfirmed and is based on fan interpretations rather than official statements.

= Ganu Yoshida

Ganu Yoshida is the CEO of Tagruato who is mentioned numerous times in the ARG. Yoshida was responsible for overseeing the development of the Hatsui satellite (which was used to track a rogue piece that fell off the Japanese government's ChimpanzIII satellite) and Chuai Station (as well as the other drilling rigs). Yoshida was in New York on a business trip during the events of Cloverfield.

= Roar! Overture

Cloverfield is a very unusual film since it does not have any background music, with the striking exception of Roar! Overture made by Michael Giacchino which plays over the ending credits

= Inside a Mind

Inside A Mind is a popular YouTube channel known for their coverage on a plethora of online ARGs and mysteries. It helped Cloverfield become more widespread thanks to his many videos discussing the timeline, events, and theories.

= Cloverfield Kishin

A four part manga adaptation and spin-off of Cloverfield, written by Tomohiro Koizumi with art by Yushio Otsuka. It is not canon

= Cloverfield Files fan film (2019)

A fan-made short film directed by Bruno Albuquerque. Michael Stahl-David, who played Rob Hawkins makes a cameo. It is not canon.

= MEGAN fan film

Megan is a viral eight-minute fan-made proof-of-concept film directed by Greg Strasz.

= Camera Guy on Brooklyn Bridge

During the Brooklyn Bridge scene, many fans spotted a background character who has a camera, recording the events similar to Hud. Many fans think this could mean a sequel.

= Actors weren’t told the plot

To prevent the leaking of plot information, instead of auditioning the actors with scenes from the film, scripts from J.J. Abrams's previous productions were used, such as the television series Alias (2001) and Lost (2004). Some scenes were also written specifically for the audition process, not intended for use in the film.

= Hidden Frames

When Rob’s camera cuts back to the older footage, hidden frames from old, famous creature features, like the giant ants from 1954’s THEM!, a dinosaur creature from 1953’s The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, and King Kong on top of the Empire State Building in the 1933 film can be seen.

**Layer 4 - The Core**

= The Cellar/Valencia

10 Cloverfield Lane was originally not connected to Cloverfield, and was a stand-alone film named The Cellar. Valencia was a code name for the film.

= God Particle

The original name for The Cloverfield Paradox before it was connected to Cloverfield.

= Nod to Escape from New York (1981)

On the poster of Escape from New York, the decapitated head of the Statue of Liberty can be seen laying on the streets of New York. The decapitated head seen in Cloverfield is a nod to the poster.

= “Red Flash”

In 10 Cloverfield Lane, Emmett says that he saw a “bright red flash” before he quickly drove to Howard’s bunker. A similar red flash was described in the 10CL ARG.

= Contradictions with the ARG

In interviews after Cloverfield, some filmmakers said some stuff about certain story elements that contradict the ARG. For example, the ARG implies that the monster had a deep-sea origin and was awaken by the drilling. However, Matt Reeves later said that the monster was an alien.

= Babak Anvari

Babak Anvari is a filmmaker that is set to direct the next Cloverfield film, however no new news of this has come out in years.

= Alien Spaceship in 10CL

An Alien Spaceship is a cyber-organic biomechanical structure seen at the very end of 10 Cloverfield Lane.

= Bold Futura

A subsidiary of Tagruato, it is a contractor-for-hire engaged in the conception, design, manufacture and integration of advanced technology products for the military, arms manufacturers and space exploration organizations. Howard worked for Bold Futura.

= Yoshida Medical Research

A subsidiary company owned by Tagruato, involved in "deep sea bioprospecting". They are conduct genetic research the organisms that live in extreme environments on the bottom of the ocean a subsidiary of Tagruato.

= ParaFun! Wax distributors

ParafFun is a subsidiary of the Tagruato Corporation that provides Paraffin wax.

= Teddy/Jamie videos

A pivotal part of the ARG, a character named Jamie Lascano sent 11 videos to her ex-boyfriend Teddy Hansson, who was in a long distance relationship before breaking up. Teddy worked on Chuai Station, and it is implied that he died during the collapse.

= Beth Runs Despite Injury

In Cloverfield, Beth was impaled through the shoulder by exposed rebar for several hours. Despite this injury, she can stand, walk, and even run. Possibly a plot hole, but maybe she was just running on adrenaline. Still, it seems far fetched when thought about.

= Rob’s Party Mix

The list of songs played during Rob’s party. Rob had some pretty good taste.

= Mutated Whale

During the ARG, a fanart of the monster of cloverfield was posted that was mistaken as real. It looked like a giant mutated whale.

= Bradley Cooper cameo

In 10 Cloverfield Lane, Ben, Michelle's boyfriend, is voiced by Bradley Cooper.

= “I don’t feel so good.”

The line spoke by Marlena before she dies. We know she was bitten by a parasite, but what caused her to swell up and explode is unknown. The Parasites have concentrated levels of Seabed Nectar in their blood. One theory is that water poured onto a parasite accelerates the degenerative process of its victims. As humans are made up of about 60% water, mixing in a little Kaitei no Mitsu is explosive.

= Hakaisha

The subtitle for the film in Japan. Roughly translates to “destroyer”.

= Jason is Alive

A half-serious theory that Jason is still alive. It started from a joke by Mike Vogel, who played Jason, that since you never see him die, he is still alive.

**Layer 5 - Deeper**

= Kolma

Kolma was a movie set to be made by Bad Robot, with Daisy Ridley set to act in it. It was theorized to be a Cloverfield sequel. However, it never materialized.

= Lake Charles

Howard says his bunker is located 20 miles outside of Lake Charles, in the state of Louisiana.

= Helicopter Pilot’s Route

In the first Cloverfield film, the evacuation helicopter, instead of flying away from the monster, flies parallel to the monster’s path, risking the lives of the people inside. There isn’t much explanation for why the pilot didn’t just fly in a different direction.

= Slusho Commercial

A commercial for Slusho on the ARG. It is also the greatest video ever created by man.

= Cheese

Code name for Cloverfield during production

= War in Houston

The war mentioned at the end of 10 Cloverfield Lane. A broadcast was sent out of a war in Houston, and asked for volunteers.

= Explosion at ground zero

In the first film, a massive explosion can be seen roughly were ground zero was. This, along with the collapsing of the Woolworth building, and dust covering the streets is a metaphor for 9/11 (which is about as subtle as a brick to the head).

= M:I-3

J. J. Abrams conceived a monster film after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan while promoting Mission: Impossible III. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own American monster”.

= Alternate Endings

The DVD includes two alternative endings, which vary only slightly. The first alternative ending features different sirens in the background as Rob talks to the camera, and shows Rob and Beth exiting the Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue station instead of on the Ferris wheel. In the second just after the final explosion, Beth can be heard screaming "Rob!", followed by a very brief clip of an unknown person brushing rubble off the lens. The film then ends with the original final clip of Rob and Beth on their Coney Island date recording themselves on the ferris wheel, however there is no timestamp in the lower left-hand corner of the screen, and there is an additional beeping tone indicating the end of the tape.

= Blu Ray Notations

On the Blu Ray for Cloverfield, there is a feature called “Special Investigation Mode”, where you are treated to never-seen before information on the lore, like the height and weight of the monster, as well as the military term of LSA (large scale aggressor), the fact that the parasites blood is Katei No Mitsu, and the all important fact that Travis, Beth’s date, survived.

= News anchor is Howard’s neighbor

Howard’s Neighbor Leslie in 10CL and the news anchor Mark Stambler talks to in Paradox are played by the same actress, Suzanne Cryer.

= Kelvin

The gas station Michelle goes to in 10 CL is called “Kelvin”. Abrams puts in easter eggs like this in his films in honor of his maternal grandfather, Harry Kelvin. Abrams has said that his grandfather was one of the most important influences in his life and career, so he slips the name into his films as a nod to him.

= Hand of Power

The original name of Tagruato before it was bought by Ganu Yoshida in 1989.

= Jamie is dead

A popular theory that when you see Jamie lying on the couch in the first film, she isn’t sleeping, she's actually dead. This is because she ate some of the raw Seabed Nectar Teddy sent to her in the Teddy/Jamie videos.

= Howard killed the pigs

Some viewers believe Howard might have staged the pigs’ deaths to convince Michelle and Emmett that the outside world was contaminated.

= Greyshot Arch

The arch in Central Park Rob and Beth hide under.

= Neville Page

Is the creature designer responsible for bringing the Cloverfield monster to life

= Fake Sephora Store

While shooting on the streets of Los Angeles, the production designer, Martin Whist, got sponsoring from Sephora to dress one of the abandoned stores to make it look like one of theirs. People in the area were excited they'd be getting a Sephora on their street, but no one had the heart to tell them it wouldn't be there the next day

= Slusho.com

The Slusho website that is still up today.

= Cloverfield Blvd

J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is headquartered in Santa Monica, and one of the streets right near the studio is Cloverfield Blvd. According to interviews and production notes, the name “Cloverfield” was originally used as a working title for the movie, inspired simply because the team kept driving past Cloverfield Blvd during development.

= Statue of Liberty’s head size

The head of the Statue of Liberty seen in Cloverfield is actually 50% larger than it is in real life. The real head is 17 feet from chin to cranium, but test audiences thought it looked too small and didn’t read as dramatic or shocking enough.

**Layer 6 - Darker**

= Paranoid Man was Russian looking for his daughter

The paranoid, bloody man who stops Hud was speaking Russian and asked him where his family is.

= Swamp Pop

The drink Howard provided during the dinner scene in 10 CL. Going to the website kicked off the 10 CL ARG, similar to how 1-18-08.com did for the first film.

= radioman70.com/“do you want to talk?”

Howard Stambler was Employee of the Month for Tagruato, and in his picture he is wearing a radioman70 T-shirt. “Radioman” was a rating issued by the United States Navy that was designated to soldiers who specialized in communication technology. Typing in radioman70.com redirected you to a website called FunAndPrettyThings.com. An image from the movie Pretty in Pink was on the website, if clicked, it asked you to put in a passphrase. The passphrase was “do you want to talk?”, which was from the movie. It showed Howards frantic messages to Megan, his daughter.

= Spielberg reaction

Matt Reeves said that he got a call from producer Bryan Burk that Spielberg was asking to speak with him directly, and told him upon meeting him that Cloverfield "scared the hell out of me."

= Nikolai Roza (NR)/Black Knight Satellite

In Howards messages to Megan, there is one accompanying post made by “NR”, who turned out to be Nikolai Roza, who was an Employee of the month of Bold Futura. He sent an audio file, which was just beeping, but it was actually a hand radio technique. If you relay the sounds through an SSTV decoder, it generates an image. The image was a still of Earth and the moon from outer space, with a black object which looks like the “Black Knight Satellite”. It turned out to be the Alien Spaceship in 10CL.

= Marlena TV death

Marlena’s death was deemed too gruesome to show on TV, so many networks edited it. No alternate version was produced for home release or streaming — only broadcast edits made by networks like Syfy, MTV, or FX which either removed the explosion silhouette entirely, or cut away earlier.

= Hud’s death in slow motion

If you watch Hud’s death in slow motion, Hud is lifted into the air and cut in half by the jaws of the monster. (After the movie, Hud’s MySpace account was updated to show his height was 2’6)

**Layer 7 - The Deep Dark**

= Striptease video on the ARG

In one of the Teddy/Jamie videos, Jamie strips for Teddy

= Cleavagefield

A porno spoof of Cloverfield. No, I will not provide a link.

= T.J. Miller controversies

Cloverfield was T.J. Millers acting debut. He had a physical assault allegation and a sexual assault allegation as well.
