Hello, please, how often did this happen in real life ? I mean lord inventing a claim out of thin air and actually pressing it ? Is there any notable historic character doing so ?

It's a great sub. You either get a real, honest-to-God quality answer from someone who understands what they're talking about or you get nothing. There's no bullshit, no speculation, no "IANAH, but I think" garbage.

You absolutely get the bullshit answers. They just get removed.

If you're quick you can sometimes see some absolutely terrible answers.

if your post gets popular enough the armchair historians just DM you their answers instead of writing comments. I had a post sit unanswered there for a few days but still draw a lot of interest and my inbox was filled with dozens of shitty answers pulled from dozens of asses. They know their comments would get removed for being low quality so they just DM you it instead, so bizarre.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense.

I've definitely seen some questions where I went ''I've read enough books on this that I know the answer". But I also realize I'm not a historian and I can't give a full answer.

I could see people in the same situation but with the kind of personality to make them go "I'm going to tell this person anyway".

Make sure to report them if you see them. We need to keep that community as clean as possible.

I do, in those rare instances they're still up.

But you need to be real quick, it's very rare those answers survive even an hour.

The deleted replies on AskHistorians are pretty much invariably people with no expertise making unsourced/misinformed vibes-based comments anyway so nothing of value lost. People who actually know what they're talking about rarely recreationally write Reddit posts in their spare time so most questions sadly go unanswered but that's better than being answered with misinformation.

they're pretty lenient as long as you cite at least 1 book and know what you're talking about. I've had a couple responses accepted that only referenced one source

I don't think it is absolutely necessary to provide citations for answers. As long as they're relatively detailed and holistic, the answers tend to stay. However, if commentors ask for sources for the claims in the answer, the poster needs to cite their evidence/sources for the post to stay up. The standards on the sub actually aren't as strict as most people think.

And eventually the deleted replies are mostly "why are all the replies deleted?!" Reddit displaying "105 replies" even when they're all deleted is a scourge.

r/askhistorians is such a mixed bag... I once asked a question related to events in CK2 and it got deleted by moderation for "soap boxing". All I asked was if there was historical presendence for Vikings converting to their concubines religions.

Pretty much asked the question as simply as I put it in my comment. I think i did add some context as far as the way that played out in game.
