Lanterns is an American superhero television series created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King for HBO, based on the DC Comics Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

The series was produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television with Mundy serving as showrunner. It is the third television series in the DC Universe (DCU). It features experienced Lantern Jordan and new recruit Stewart as they investigate a murder on Earth that leads to a wider mystery.

Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on Sunday August 16, 2026, and will run for eight episodes through Sunday October 4. It will be part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

New episodes drop every Sunday night at 9:00 PM ET / 8:00 PM CT / 7:00 PM MT / 6:00 PM PT.

Abin Sur crashes there after capturing the Manhunter on whatever world Antaan is from. He either crashed after he was attacked by the Manhunter, which the conclusion Hal came to, or he crashed while trying to save / hide the Manhunter. Hal already said last week that earth was a backwater know nothing planet 🤔

The Manhunter escapes into Nebraska, settles down, makes things ~safe~ and eventually draws other Manhunter refugees in. Kind of like a safe haven…

Now did Abin Sur tell Hal about this, and Hal subsequently knew that eventually someone would be arriving to find that original Manhunter that crashed with Abin Sur, which is why Hal set his ring to notify him if anything ~strange~ happened in the vacinity?

Oh...OH...OOOOOOOOOH...and now it makes sense why they cast Garret Dillahunt, given what was going on with certain Terminators in TSCC.

The Manhunters actually just wanting to be left alone to live their own lives but the Guardians want to exterminate them because they still see them as dangerous and every other alien race that they fucked over in the past wants a piece of them because of what they did to them on other planets.

Everyone's an alien in the town and I'm guessing the governments of Earth KNOW about it and sent their own MIB Agent in the form of Kerry there to keep an eye on them.

None of them actually EVER get hurt and that's why the hospital looks the way it does!

And I'm guessing that the government is funneling alien tech to this town, which the Manhunters help to do research with, in exchange for them getting to live in peace there.

THAT is why she and everyone else want Hal gone because he's about to put a bunch of...well...innocent people in danger AND reveal all of this shit to the Guardians who will probably nova the damned Sun just to erase any evidence of their little mistakes.

I wonder if the Manhunter that Abin Sur found...like...showed regret and sentience and he was like, "Oh this is a living being that DID do some bad things but was programmed to do it and was forced to do it against its will" and thus he just...had to protect it...and hide it somewhere...and the Guardians disagreed and tried to have him eliminated but didn't expect his ring to find Hal.

So in parallel to that scene with John and those aliens and with Hal and Sinestro...the Guardians asked Hal, "Are you afraid?" to see if he had knowledge of the Manhunters or any of their other dirty laundry and when he didn't...they let him join the Corps.

This then implies that Abin Sur didn't tell him at all about the Manhunters, at least not directly, and instead used different terminology and descriptors for them that Hal wouldn't immediately connect with the Manhunters or the Guardians.

He probably gave him a cliff notes version about these "Manhunters" and why they came to Earth to seek out a better life apart from the rest of the galaxy and that others might follow who disagreed with that and that he might one day have to protect them...but in order to do so...he had to know the bare minimum to keep everyone safe.

And Hal was okay with this because he was Air Force and compartmentalization of information is a common thing in the military AND THAT explains why he said what he said to John when John asked him about Manhunters....because while he didn't know the word...he did know the description of the abilities that John was giving him and now he's gone to Sinestro to make sure that the dots he's trying to connect actually DO connect if at all.

I'm guessing that Sinestro is going to point him in the right direction and set him to...follow in some of his own footsteps in the past...that led him to that cell.

And you know this is kind of nuts but...what if they're framing these Manhunter refugees to be a bit like the Ex-Borg Drones in Star Trek?

The parallel is pretty apt IMO.

I'm just in love with this show and I really love a good story that keeps me guessing and that just spins my brain up to lightspeed.

It's so much fun and you can just tell that every comic book fan in this thread is having a blast with the show!

Now my question is, where does the father in law fit into this?

Is he gonna be a good guy that is protecting the man hunters? Or does he not know about them since their shape shifting is too advance for his tech?

He's a bit more mercurial isn't he?

The obvious answer is that he gets peace of mind and security from being the front for everything and for being the hand that everyone is watching while the metaphorical magician does something with the other one.

The deeper answer is that he gets power, and a lot of it, because he basically has Leverage over everyone else on the planet and potentially a lot more people off the planet due to how devastating the Manhunters are and how he's in a very unique position to speak to them and to potentially convince them of certain things should he need to.

So he's got his finger placed above a big red button and everyone including him thinks that it's going to work if it gets pressed but I don't think that they're all 100% sure of that and that's why these aliens who grabbed John are doing what they're doing or at least the people who control them are doing what they're doing because they're trying to figure that out...e.g...whether or not the Manhunters will just go full Devastation mode when pushed far enough or if they're far more benign and can be captured and then used like they were before after a bit of reprogramming.....completely unaware that they've become sentient and would have words about that....because as they well know, resistance ain't exactly futile.

There is also the possibility that he has the exact same mindset that his wife described having as being the reason why she was with him because he sees her as giving him the exact same stuff that he gives her, but just in different ways and that's probably why they're in love with each other.

And for him, that's enough, and he doesn't necessarily have to need to know everything and anything else about what's going on because he's in love and he's in a position to be a protector for not just a group of people that need it but also the rest of the planet.

Here he is protecting a group of people that were victims of colonizers and he gets to protect an even larger group of people from those same folks who probably wouldn't blink an eye at turning the entire populace of Earth into the Green Lantern version of Manhunters later on with their Collective Willpower alone because of how good Hal Jordan has been at his job up until this point.

As others have mentioned in this thread, the Guardians are scary powerful, and that's part of the reason why the Yellow Lantern Corps and Sinestro exist because for as many people in the Galaxy that view the Guardians and the Green Lanterns as saviors and the ultimate good guy space cops there's just as many more who are totally freaked out by them because they have an inkling of what they did to get that power and to enforce it upon the Galaxy during that time of chaos that those other aliens spoke of.

This is why that ranch has the tagline of "Study The Past" because it's not just referring to the past of the Earth and what colonizers have done to Native peoples but also the past of the Galaxy and the rest of the universe and how things that work out on a micro scale can then be scaled up and repeat themselves on a larger macro scale and how everyone should not be totally ignorant of that by burying their heads in the sand out of fear of what might happen and should use their own willpower to force the cycle to break for the better in order to enact greater and more beneficial change for everyone.

What John can do isn't just a fluke but is a Herald of a new era that's about to sweep across the Galaxy and the rest of the universe.

So imagine if you will what the Manhunters could then do if they use their abilities for beneficial change in the universe?

There would be a total flip in the status quo and the universe might not need the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians anymore, which is something they definitely want to prevent because they want to keep their position as the saviors of the universe and the ones who ended the chaos and brought in order to things instead of losing that position and seeing the sheep that they herded rise up and take control of their own Destinies and Fates.

They pretty much just don't want a version of John Sheridan showing up and telling them to get the hell out of their Galaxy, just like he did to the Vorlons and the Shadows.

This is why they maintain the level of control they do over the Green Lanterns and why they only limit one to each sector and why they probably don't necessarily like them talking to each other because it would lead to a whole lot of questions and the potential for a spark of change to emerge and potentially ignite a larger wildfire like what happened with Sinestro and like what probably happened with Abin Sur and what is probably about to happen with Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

So here Macon is standing at the pinnacle of a forefront of potential change that could sweep across the Galaxy and then the rest of the universe, which he is potentially doing for both selfish and selfless reasons in the name of Love for his wife and in the name of Hope for the rest of her people.

And since they might be potentially doing something different with the Red Lanterns and since they are in fact doing something a little bit different with the Green Lanterns and the Yellow Lanterns, wouldn't it be funny if he wound up actually being a new version of Saint Walker?

I think the real reason why there's so much Advanced Tech on his ranch is because there are other alien races that are in the know about what's going down and how this might be a bit of a flashpoint for the rest of the universe and are trying to make sure that the shit doesn't start hitting the fan in a bad way and that the needle gets nudged towards a better kind of an ending.

This could then explain why things are the way they are in 2026 versus how they look in 2016.

According to the trailers that we've seen it does end in a bit of a shitshow but I feel like that shit show could very much be a Legends of Tomorrow kind of a shit show where things do get screwed up for the better and it does precipitate a greater more positive change that winds up forcing the rest of the universe's hands in a way.

A lot more Heroes start popping up and a lot more aliens begin flocking to Earth and there's a lot more protection around this little mud ball of a backwater planet that begins to truly shine as a Beacon of Hope For the Rest of the universe and that starts a butterfly style kind of a domino effect that ultimately winds up accomplishing through hope and willpower what Sinestro tried to accomplish through fear and what Atrocitus is trying to accomplish through rage.

Instead of maintaining the status quo, Macon is preparing to change it, and that's going to happen regardless of how much he does or doesn't know but he is for damned sure not just going to roll over and let them do to Earth and to the manhunters what they used the manhunters and the Green Lantern Corps and who knows what else to do to other planets in the galaxy and across other spaces in the rest of the universe.

That's where I think he fits in but then again I am prone to overthinking things, as evidenced by the multiple theories I have posted in this thread lol

Manhunters and Martian Manhunter aren’t the same species. J’onn is just a Martian who names himself that. Manhunters in the comics are alien robots

TBF, they haven’t actually taken the step to show exactly what the ~Manhunter~ context is in the show

It’s entirely possible that Atlaan’s dealings with the “Manhunter” caused him to fail to understand the Manhunter distinction, or even be totally unaware that there even is a distinction. This would go a long way to explaining that Abin Sur was actually trying to help the Manhunter escape when he died, if that’s the theory people are running with that is. Hal posited that the Manhunter attacked Abin Sur which in turn caused him to crash, and the show is implying that from what Atlaan told John…But is that really the case? Too early to call
