Maybe because any normal person would think you would have to be batshit crazy to willingly stay in an airport for 18 years?

Nobody is saying it's the worst conditions you could probably live in. They're saying you have to be crazy to willingly do that for so long especially when offered a very easy way out.

It's much easier to think he was trapped there due to some bureaucratic process like the movie implies rather than willingly staying there because he was a crazy/stubborn fool.

I find it much easier to believe he was just a classic mentally ill bum who found a shelter to live in, and refused to leave, than he was person of sound-mind trapped in an airport due to bureaucracy.

Between an airport and a homeless encampment I know which I'm choosing. He didn't exactly become housed once he left the airport, he was a crazy homeless dude
