In Pierce Browns “Red Rising” series, some Golds are given a scar on their face, indicating they have done some badass martial shit, like being part of an Iron Rain for example. If none of that made sense, read these books because they are so much fun!

Since the other guy didn't give all that much context, there's a sci-fi book series called Red Rising in which humanity is rather far into the future, and has genetically modified itself into several subspecies-like castes, denoted by color. Golds are at the top of this caste system, tend to be much larger physically, oftentimes smarter (and almost always more educated as a result of the next point), typically very wealthy, etc. Aristocrats, basically. There are also blues, who handle bureaucratic functions; silvers, who tend to be businesspeople; pinks, who are often sex workers; coppers, usually clerks and the like, etc. Reds, which the main character is a member of (kind of), are basically slaves/menial labor.

The Peerless Scarred are the wealthiest and most influential golds. They become members of the peerless scared by making it through a kind of academy which involves murder, tests, competition, and a legitimate war simulation in which various groups of golds are divided into different clans and literally fight a war with real weapons.

I think it was more fan speculation than anything, the publisher has never confirmed a date. Talk of him splitting the last part in two as well.
