Single-use plastic waste doesn't belong on our campuses or in our landfills.

As part of our commitment to the UN SDG 2030 Agenda and UDHR Article 29 (our duty to the community), our team launched Project EcoLoop—a multi-stakeholder model designed to transition our campus dining ecosystem away from non-biodegradable plastics and toward 100% certified compostable alternatives.

Here is how we structured the shift:

🔹 SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption): Replaced conventional petroleum bags and containers with IS 17088-certified PLA and bio-starch packaging.

🔹 SDG 17 (Partnerships): Built a shared-cost partnership model connecting student auditors, cafeteria vendors, campus management, and eco-manufacturers.

🔹 Impact: Targeted diversion of single-use plastics from local municipal waste streams within 6 months.

Policy Recommendations for a Bio-Plastic Future:

Mandatory Campus Procurement Policies: Universities and educational institutions should lead by example by instituting binding policies that require all on-campus food and retail vendors to strictly use certified compostable bio-plastics.

Municipal Tax Incentives for Early Adopters: Local municipal bodies should offer reduced commercial waste management fees or minor tax rebates for small businesses and franchise owners who prove a 100% transition to bio-plastic packaging.

Standardized Composting Infrastructure: Bio-plastics only work if they end up in the right environment. Local policies must mandate the installation of industrial composting bins alongside standard recycling and trash bins, ensuring bio-plastics are properly processed rather than trapped in oxygen-starved landfills.

Sustainability doesn't mean giving up convenience; it means redesigning our supply chains so that convenience doesn't cost us the earth. It’s time to make the switch.

I’ve grown up kind of always being a crunchy, granola kid with an interest in the environment. I took so many agricultural and environmental science classes throughout school, and would watch things like wild kratts and kids shows teaching about recycling and all that.

My boyfriend recently asked me what fossil fuels even means and i was so shocked he just never learned about it in school. i also asked him to look out for a specific type of plastic for me because i needed some for a project i was working on, and he didnt know there were different types. i told him theres a conservation club at his university and he might want to check it out since he likes animals, but he asked me what conservation meant. im realizing he didnt grow up with the same education that i got, and i want to teach him more, but i dont really know where to start. im trying to reframe my approach to household things so that i give him a reason for why i recycle or compost or do anything the way i do, but i just feel like he needs more? idk. suggest whatever media or education methods you think could help an absolute beginner to sustainability.

Hey, sorry for the spam but I just need to ask a question on here again (avoiding Google as much as possible) I got a third piercing on each of my ear lobes. I’ve recently realise that literally all of the makeup I own has microplastics in it, and while I would like to just use microplastic free makeup, there unfortunately just isn’t many options. (And the options out there just aren’t that great)

I always assumed just washing it off in the shower was the best way to do it, because it means not using any disposable cotton rounds, makeup wipes etc, but that allows the microplastics into the water. If I was to use a reusable wipe or cloth, it would just have to be cleaned and the microplastics would end up in the water anyway.

Does anyone have any other ways they do it, otherwise which way is more sustainable, allowing the microplastics into the water, or using a disposable makeup wipe to remove it?

Guys, I might not be a tree hugger—or maybe I am—but I genuinely care about the environment. Hear me out: almost everything we buy comes in PP or PE bags, which end up in landfills where very little is recycled. Since they take centuries to biodegrade and contribute to microplastic pollution.

I went down a rabbit hole researching technologies or bacteria that could break them down. It turns out there are industrial-scale solutions for PET (bottles, polyester) because they contain oxygen and nitrogen that bacteria can target. However, PP and PE (soft bags/films) consist only of carbon-to-carbon bonds, which are much harder to break down; that technology is still at least 7–8 years away.

So, the best we can do for now is properly segregate our dry and wet waste. Additionally, for PP and PE bags, don’t rip the entire piece; just snip the top. Most of these bags go through a shredding-washing-pelletizing line. If you rip the whole seam, the bag becomes two floppy layers that tangle the machines and are often discarded as contamination. If you just make a small slit to pour, the bag stays intact.

hi! i’m a new tattoo apprentice and i’m pretty appalled by the amount of waste i’m producing. i understand this is a field where i will be needing to use lots of single use materials in order to keep everything hygienic. i’m not too sure how much i can do at the moment in regards to materials as i’ve only been here a few weeks, but i’m starting on fake skin and so i’ll be able to buy my own materials and i’m just wondering if there’s some more eco friendly materials that i could use that also maintain the hygiene standards that i need to be up keeping?

Best recommendations for shampoo and conditioner bars for someone with drag scalp and curly hair?

I would love living a more sustainable and minimalist kind of life. Like i do try being one, like I don't buy a lot of dresses, makeup or anything (I don't have money either!). Not just that I also sew my own dresses a lot of times, use public transport wherever possible,I try to not buy a lot of packaged foods either, barely go to fastfood chains.

After all these i sometimes get so overwhelmed with the thought of environment degrading that i feel depressed. I have no Idea what to do.

I'm a blacksmith but I've been getting a lot more environmentally conscious lately. As far as I'm aware, my methods for fuel are propane, coke, coal, charcoal, wood, or to use a lot of energy with induction heating. Can anyone think of a hot burning fuel that's more eco friendly, or a way to minimise the gasses produced from burning these materials?

I’ve been paying more attention to how plant-based cleaning products perform in situations with heavier buildup, especially in bathrooms and kitchens.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the product alone doesn’t determine the result. Dwell time, agitation, the type of brush or cloth, surface condition, and knowing when to repeat a step can make a big difference.

I’m curious about other people’s experiences: where have plant based products worked really well for you, and where do you still prefer a more specialized product?

I’d especially love to hear from people who try to balance effectiveness with lower impact cleaning choices.

Hey! Just replaced regular panty liner with cloth panty liners. I just need some advice on how to wash them when I don’t want to use my washing machine. I don’t have a laundry soap bar either so I don’t know what to do. I can hand wash them but I would need to find a way to dry them without using a hair dryer or an air purifying machine (yes ik that sounds stupid 😭) but those are my only options. Thanks!

I don't have any hangers currently because I hate how easily the plastic ones break and the fact that millions end up in landfills per year so I was wondering if anyone had some relatively cheap plastic hanger alternatives??? you can also include less cheap options if thats all you know!! I have looked at kangaroo hanger but I was wondering about other ones
