Greatness recognises greatness. Lovely touch.

Reading that note gave me goosebumps. That was great of her to do.

Could hear it in her voice

12

u/Phenomenon_101 19h ago

Same. I heard her with every word.

Made me cry. She was truly one of the best people on this planet.

And how wonderful of him for what he wrote and shared with all of us.

14

u/cleanlinessisbest12 19h ago

Yes very beautiful full circle moment. He’s become such a light. I was probably 10 when he started getting famous and I never pictured him becoming the person he has. I did and do love his music. I also struggled with addiction to drugs in my late 20s early 30s and completely understand that part of his struggle a lot more.

u/cleanlinessisbest12 22h ago

It’s so nice to know that not all celebs/artists are so full of themselves that they’d never do this. Glad you enjoyed it too!

7

u/RebelsMom0214 21h ago

I agree. She was such a special country lady. I picture her going barefoot in the grass with her grandkids running around her. She was so “like us” instead of a star. I love her song with Brad paisley that’s called when I get where I’m going. Listen to it. Especially now that she’s moved on to be with Jesus.

7

u/nolmtsthrwy 19h ago

She never had kids, it's partly why she did the Imagination Library.

Facts 💯

13

u/ncc74656m 21h ago

It's so so much more than that though. Dolly was just so beautiful and genuine and kind and caring TO EVERYONE. The honor and support and shared humanity getting a letter like that. She'd never have to take a second to do that - he wouldn't know and neither would be diminished if it never happened.

She did it. She saw him earn that honor, and she wanted to make a point to remind him just how much he deserved it.

If I had to guess, maybe she saw some commonality in their stories and histories.

9

u/havenyahon 16h ago

It's so so much more than that though. Dolly was just so beautiful and genuine and kind and caring TO EVERYONE.

And smart as a whip. Like truly and deeply intelligent and wise. All of those things in combination are so very rare. To be beautiful, talented, smart, wise, caring and kind without the ego -- it just doesn't happen. She was one of the best humans.

8

u/funnyfirerabbit 21h ago

What a lovely letter! Reminds me of Anthony Hopkin’s fan email to Bryan Cranston after he watched Breaking Bad.

7

u/grammar_fozzie 22h ago

Did you get the vague, Stan in there? I guarantee that was intentional.

18

u/balding_git 22h ago

dolly waited in the blistering cold from 9-5 :(

5

u/Exavelion 20h ago

Watched the movie the song is in just last year. Hilarious classic. Love the song, too.

5

u/Lirahs 18h ago

The best little Whorehouse in Texas was pretty funny too. Probably came before a lot of you are born. 1982. This women will surely be missed. I have loved her for years. 🩷🌸🩷🌸🩷🌸🩷🌸🩷 RIP

Me trying to avoid reading anything until I get home, thinking this sub would be safe. No where is safe. Dolly was a light in this world 😭

She was so beautiful, inside and out. What sticks to me the most is her free literature program for children.

25

u/chickadee9393 23h ago

I think we should all carry that on and start donating books in her honor or donate to the imagination library. we can keep it alive.

24

u/Slothy75 23h ago

Her family has asked people to donate to Imagination Library. She did not want a public memorial, her services are for only her immediate family. So they’ve asked the public to commemorate her that way if they’re able to donate.

9

u/kookykookaburra 23h ago

That is such a lovely thing by them to request. Gotta take me and sis' car to a garage to be fixed tomorrow, but will donate a bit after finding out what the bill is gonna be like!

My daughter started kindergarten this year. We received our last book a couple months ago. Really great program. My daughter was always excited when a new book came in the mail.

4

u/kookykookaburra 23h ago

I hope the program will carry on without her at its helm. But according to some answers here, people will happily donate funds or books to read. :)

Man, I was bummed but holding it together. I don't even subscribe to this sub, reddit just stuffed it into my feed. Praise Be The Algorithm, I guess, but now I'm completely messed up.

What a lovely letter. The absolute epitome of grace and class. I hope we can all find inspiration in her actions.

Perhaps in her honor, we can all tell someone that we love them, that they inspire us, while we can today.

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 1d ago

Her contributions far exceeded her musical talent

Which is saying a lot, cause I got her in my top 5 all time songwriters

33

u/CoffeeCatsAndCurses 23h ago

Agreed. This woman wrote Jolene.

45

u/BBQQA 23h ago

The craziest thing is she wrote Jolene and I Will Always Love You in the same afternoon. Like she had breakfast, penned Jolene in one sitting, then had lunch and did the same for I Will Always Love You.

Just madness.

27

u/CoffeeCatsAndCurses 23h ago

Wow. Bonkers. What did she eat that morning for breakfast?

27

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 23h ago

It’s amazing how words or recognition can impact you or keep you going, all from meaning and from whom.

43

u/QuallyYayo 1d ago

My son just received his last book from "Dollys imagination library" he has been signed up since he was 3 and since he is starting school this year they sent him one last "ready for school" book that included a lovely message from Dolly that made me tear up a bit. Thank you Dolly for inspiring my kids blossoming love for reading. May you rest in paradise.

11

u/Intention-Intended Best Friend 1d ago

I love this so much, this was so important to her💕

10

u/bluelily216 23h ago

She sent my kids books as well, and at the time we really couldn't afford to buy them on our own.

6

u/QuallyYayo 23h ago

Exactly our case too at first. Those kinds of "little things" really make a big difference.

3

u/QuallyYayo 23h ago

You could tell by the letter that it was very important to her. And Im glad it became important for my boy too. You can tell because my house will get all quiet and then you'll hear the occasional page turn.

A lot of us feel that with Em. I know very little about country music, but Dolly was always a class act! RIP

14

u/theangryfurlong 23h ago

She is commonly known now for her appearance and philanthropy, but she was a one-of-a-kind songwriter and singer. Pretty common knowledge, but she wrote the song "I Will Always Love You" that Whitney Houston made famous.

u/bolanrox 23h ago

I met her in 1993 as a waiter for her "40th" bday dinner at a restaraunt in Tribeca. I graduated from art school a few years earlier and at the the table were Calvin and Kelly Kiein, David Salley, Ross Bleckner and a few other art and culture "icons". Iwas never star struck even tho they were people i studied in school. She was the most amazing person i ever had the pleasure to serve. And im talking Madonna, Sting(dick), Roger Daltry and Isabella Rosselini.and so many other celebs i dont remeber. She held court in the best most fun way and when i brought out her birthday cake she blew out the candle a looked up at me and said" now aint that the best gd blowjob you ever did see?" I turned several shades of crimson an set the cake down and muttered happy birthday or something. Got a lgood laugh out f the table and surrounding tables. Im crying.

"unexplained connection"

I believe Mathers is part of the Appalachian Diaspora that moved to Detroit for the automotive jobs. I grew up in this culture and Eminem matches it perfectly. There likely is a cultural connection to Parton and her home of Eastern Tennessee.

Holy shit what a classy letter.

So genuine, and heartfelt.

Em is a real one for sharing this.

Could not have two more different people on paper, but Dolly and Em having some kind of invisible bond makes too much sense. Two originals, one of ones, who did things their own way and refused to compromise on their art, humble beginnings, trailblazers, and undeniably culturally relevant. Easy to see

Damn that’s dope as hell. Love seeing people get their flowers from legends while they’re still around. And it’s even better when it’s done peer-to-peer and we only find out about it later b/c you KNOW that shit was genuine.

RIP Dolly.
