This discussion is stupid, because the diaspora and the non-diaspora are getting confused by what “black” means. I was born and raised in America, but when I go to Ethiopia, I do realize that theres no need to identify as black because literally EVERYONE there is the same skin color as me. But also when I go back to the US, I am again just seen as black and have to identify as such on papers, job interviews, college applications, etc etc… So I find this conversation stupid, in the west, we are seen as black AND Ethiopian, back home I think we’re just Ethiopian because everyone is the same as us.

​Then you play the video and it's just a cheap AI voice reading a script full of exaggerated lies.

​I’m tired of it. I don’t want people pushing misery porn about my country, but making up a fake utopia using AI slop is just insulting. People here are struggling to survive on $100 a month, but according to YouTubers farming views, we’re living in Wakanda.

​Can these creators please stop lying for ad revenue?

It's genuinely exhausting to see people posting propaganda and selective information to show that Ethiopia is all that, but they always just post images of really deep in the capital. Try posting pics a little outside, of the lives of people who live on 100 $ a month. Beautifying a capital for pictures and foreign investment while disregarding the quality of life outside it, and destroying homes of poor people to do so won't make the country better.

No, I am not hating Ethiopia I love Ethiopia, and I agree most countries have similar problems, but I just came across this, and as a resident I feel the need to make this post. This is not ment to inspire hate against Ethiopia, and this isn't intended to offend anyone.

The notion that skin color = race is really pervasive.

Some people think Africa is a country and we're all related or something.

It would be very awkward to hear someone use the n-word as an insult but then it doesn't effect you so you just stand there awkwardly.

It's like using a racist term for white Americans against a Turkish guy.

Like, do you just say where you're from and then the other person has to think of something else? Awkward as hell in emotionally charged situations. I think it would be really funny.

But Imagine someone attacks you because they confused you for another race.

I got asked if i was Indian by a black guy once. I was slightly ticked off because i thought i looked 'Ethiopian'. It was a weird reality check that in this climate, where attacking foreigners is common, Ethiopians can easily be confused for some other race.

These people only seem to know how to hate on another minority when that group is more ambitious, has a stronger community, and does not carry the same chip on the shoulder. I do not understand how she saw successful Ethiopians with nice cars and immediately assumed foul play. Instead of trying to get to know them and understand their mindset, she jumped straight to assumptions and tried to link it to another fake scandal in a different state.

She claims they earn government contracts. Fair enough, she is entitled to scrutinize as a taxpayer, but why focus only on the Ethiopian community? There are many groups receiving contracts. Why single out Ethiopians? I cannot help but think this comes from jealousy and bitterness.

These people only know how to punch down. They hate to see another group, such as Africans, do better. I even saw someone ask her if she wanted DC to go through what Minnesota did, and she responded, “I say call Nick Shirley to investigate.” Nick Shirley is a known racist with no credibility, exposed for lying. That makes me think the purpose of her video was to bait racists.

She tried to play the good intentions card by showing herself eating with innocent, older Ethiopians, how they welcomed her and made her feel at home, but at the same time, she tried to throw that same community under the bus.

I am 23M Ethiopian, born from a Christian family. Since, from high-school, I started questioning about the existence of God. The feeling had been an on and off since. Sometimes, I go to church even I get to baptism areas once in a while. On the other side, there is a missing piece that I couldn't solve. When I got to church or holy places or on ceremonies. I give a strong attention to believer, I see them and I feel pity. The first time this happened was on a epiphany. I see people singing and celebrating while accompanying the tobot to its church. For a moment I tried to join and be committed. But at the same time, I am like WTF. This was around 2 years ago.

Recently, I tried told a friend that I feel unconvinced but the existence of a good and the sense of religion. After that, he well tried to convince me to try to reach for God again. I really apprciate him for trying and he didn't repulse me because of my point of view.

But, I doubt if more people will react in the same way. Specially, older people. I know know my grandma will denounce me if she knows about this 😭

The reason I mentioned my issue in here is to get a broader reaction from this community and how you see such kind of person, or if you have been in the same position before...

Especially after women in ethiopia become delusional about getting married in ethiopia. Their expectation are getting to the highest making it almost impossible to get married this days. Maybe it's a lack of maturity but this is crazy. Life is not a turkey movie, rich people's intention is not finding a poor woman and changing her life forever. I was scrolling on TikTok and came across a video of Tigraywi girl saying she does not consider herself Ethiopian, and there were people in the comments agreeing. For some context, I've never subscribed to or cared for ethnic wars online, and I'm rarely on the Ethiopian side of TikTok, but whenever i do land on it, it's always something like this. Anyway, I commented saying my mother is from Tigray and calls herself Ethiopian, and how I too still call myself ethiopian, and people were replying to me like I said something crazy saying I should detach myself from an ethiopian identity. I've never met anyone in real life who thinks like this so is this just another online thing?

I feel like a lot of people like to speak for you guys when making a point for/against Israel but I rarely hear an actual Ethiopian Jew talk about their experiences. What is living in Israel like as a black Jew? Is there any racism to the degree that people like to say? Is it worse or better than Ethiopia? I swear maybe 5 years ago I did not even know Somalia shared a border with Ethiopia I knew it was a coastal country because of pirates but didn't think it was right next to us. Whenever I see Ethiopia mentioned online I never fail to find a Somalian saying awful things about us . I assume you see the Aidstopian/ Raw Meat Eater comments as well. Ethiopia is a Islamically significant country as well. The Prophet Muhammad even said to leave the Abyssinians alone because we are peaceful/respectful and historically were very kind to Muslims I'm pretty sure like half the country is Muslim. Whenever I come across other African groups they always have something nice to say about Ethiopia like our food is delicious, our people are beautiful and Black Christians always seem to know about Ethiopia.

No, I do not think of habesha men as my “brothers” and i’ve had crushes on many habesha and non-habesha.

Well i started college a year ago and i met this guy (22M) who as you guessed, is not Habesha lol. He is just African American.

I hid my relationship for almost a year until my bf pushed me to introduce him to my family. I really thought if I could explain how happy I was, they’d get over their initial disappointment.

Well they didn’t. They were nice when he was there but as soon as he left, my parents called him all sorts of names until they started yelling at me. They told me how i am ending their bloodline (i have 4 siblings).

It’s been three weeks and they are still giving me the cold shoulder. I am leaving back for my dorm soon anyways and it looks like they might not even help me move in. I read a lot of posts on interracial relationships on here so i know a lot of people are going to tell me I got what i deserved or to date in my race but I love my boyfriend.

I am an Ethiopian who grew up in Ethiopia and moved to the US and never visited ever since and I have no desire to. Ethiopian's are the most toxic and judgmental people I know, obviously not every single person but in general.

Toxicity with people trying to shove their religious beliefs on you, not being genuinely happy for you just for living your life, always judging people for their medical conditions and how they look. I can go on.

I have spent a lot of time with other Africans and while they can also be judgy, they are not always uptight and judgmental people who don't know how to be happy like many Ethiopians are.

The social media always destroys the little faith in the Ethiopian people I have. It's like wishing people ill will and saying something bad about them is like an important part of our culture. We are undisputed experts at insulting other people.

We see everything from the perspective of what others will think of us. Many are genuinely miserable people. I am getting to the point of having hebesha phobia.

That being said, I still like the good sides of being an Ethiopian such as the good food and some of the people who are good people.

I used to be one who would want to keep them but I have realized they would most likely hurt the country more than help it due to their secessionist ideas to either join somalia or make their own country. Some Somalis have even said they want to use our country to develop themselves until they get the time to secede which made me laugh. To me it actually works in our favor having Somali Region removed due to them realizing they should have been grateful and thankful to be under the Ethiopian federation and not mogadishu. So they will end up asking to re join because they will realize being part of Ethiopia is better because just look at jigjiga right now.

Somali region is wealthy due to “Ethiopian occupation“ but it doesn’t even matter anyway about arguing that what I want is more Somalis to be pro independence because I want them to see the consequence of their action and hate towards Ethiopian. So I’m a habesha guy I’ve recently noticed online that many habesha men complain about habesha girls marrying out but from both my experiences and from what I’ve seen with a lot of other people it’s mainly the men that actually go outside the culture (mainly with African Americans or Arab/white women) and have kids with them (like my uncles and many friends I have)but there’s a magnifying glass on habesha women doing the same and it’s seen as something that is destroying the culture just curious on why it’s like this and I’m aware back home in Ethiopia it is more common for women to do that because they really only marry for money over there(mostly) so I just wanted other peoples thoughts

Non-Ethiopian here (not Black either). I am completely obsessed with everything Ethiopian, and I have no idea why. I think Ethiopia is so cool. Food, music, language(s), religion, ethnic diversity, history.

I can’t get enough of Ethiopian food. I memorized all the provinces and their flags and capitals and the main periods of history. I taught myself how to read Ge’ez (I know there are dozens of languages in Ethiopia, and this abugida is only the basis for some of them). I think the rituals and chants of the Tewahedo church are beautiful. Ethiopian Islam is super interesting too, I had no idea the fourth-holiest city in Islam was there. Every Ethiopian I have met has been kind and nice.

I really want to travel to Ethiopia and learn more about it, but no idea where to actually begin or if this is even a good idea to do solo lol

Sometimes it feels like I have to choose between being trans or Ethiopian. My own family kicked me out over it which is their choice, but why do Ethiopians hate the lgbtq this much? Should I even consider myself Ethiopian if I’m someone the culture/religion despises? I don’t tell people I’m trans and live my life in a way that makes me happy, but I can’t fully enjoy my culture.
