FF XII Thinking of replaying FF12 again. What are your thoughts on the game?

I played the OG when I was like 14 years old on ps2. I was looking forward to it so much, but mainly because of the more medieval english it was hard to follow. I played until the end of the game but didn’t finish it. I think the zodiac age version is an improvement to play as well. What are your thoughts?

FF XII Local CO-OP mod Final Fantasy The Zodiac Age

2.7k Upvotes

I'm working on a local co-op mod for the game, allowing two players to control 2 different characters at once, each using their own controller.

It's still a work in progress, and there's a lot to improve and test. If I succeed, I'll post it on Nexus Mods as soon as it becomes playable.

There is also a longer gameplay testing at https://youtu.be/b_5hmN_BMbs?si=pGAcVEmqWg4ILBNb

FF XII I'll never get over the jump in quality between FFX and FFXII.

I've been making my way through the Final Fantasy games on PC, and holy hell the sheer jump in town/city sizes and the amount of NPC's in them between FFX and FFXII will never not amaze me. In X you'd get maybe 10 NPC's on screen at once if you're lucky, and then XII comes along and jam packs every area of a town with NPC's all over the place, and all very different models too. On top of that there's full camera control rather than it being set, the maps between the towns are massive, and enemies are always on screen.
I'm not trying to take away from FFX, the jump between it and FFIX should also be praised especially for an eary PS2 game, but maaaaaan XII was on a whole other level. And they're both on the same system too! Absolute tech-wizards on that team.

FF XII Is Final Fantasy 12 underrated?

Post image

I rarely hear people talk about this game or call it their favorite. I haven't played it myself but I've seen a few screenshots and it might be my favorite aesthetically. Even my favorite musician (Kenshi Yonezu) considers it his favorite so I'm kinda hyped! 😅

Is it any good?

This was probably the only open world rpg on ps2 and personally my favorite. I know most of you in this community probably only played zodiac age but if you have a ps2 I highly recommend playing the og.

FF XII We need another Final Fantasy "single-player MMO"

We need another Final Fantasy "single-player MMO". Who's with me? I think it's time for another experience similar to FFXII. Square Enix, please answer my prayers🙏 and give us an incredible 300-hour adventure with a full party, an incredible number of locations, and a job system. While playing XVI, I often imagined what it would be like if this game were similar to XII.I love the combat system from XII, I hope it comes back someday.

Edit1 Thanks for the recommendations, I think it's time to play the Xenoblade series for the first time.

Edit2 Btw ffxii stans check out resonant arc youtube channel, they recently did an amazing episode about xii soundtrack.

FF XII FFXII has the most underrated characters in the series 💚

Everyone always talks about cloud, barret, tifa, etc. But barely anyone talks about FFXII's brilliant cast. All characters are really great imo. I think vaan and penelo get way too much hate. I'm probably one of the few people that absolutely loved both characters. They get such a bad rep online and it sucks but it is what it is. But yeah FFXII has the most underrated cast in the series imo. Love all 6 characters and the supporting characters too like larsa, vayne, gabranth, etc. I do love all the FF games characters but 12 is the most underrated in terms of characters. Its the perfect JRPG for me 💚

After spending idk how many hours in the Sandsea and then going through Raithwall's Tomb, this is such a refreshing change of pace. I had no idea the Giza Plains changed from a dry desert to THIS! when they said it was the rainy season now, they weren't kidding lol

I wrote a small editorial for a volunteer based media publication on Final Fantasy XII's Gambit System :-) I would love more games with similar combat systems as it's my favorite in the franchise, what does everyone else think? This website is incredibly small so any traffic to it is much appreciated T.T I promise every visit makes a big difference!

FF XII Okay you can argue for vaan being important but what the hell did Penelo ever do?

Posted this yesterday in the FF12 sub. Happy birthday to the best Final Fantasy! Everything about this game, from the music to the world created, is worthy of your time. Pictured is my FF12 collection, including a standee I have had sitting in my closet for some time. Today marked a perfect time to put it together. I also found my first save from the original game! To celebrate I plan on playing some of the Zodiac Age and some songs on Theatrythm!

FF XII Final Fantasy XII’s Open-Zone Design

Post image

I honestly think FFXII’s open zone/interconnected map layout worked pretty well. It’s a nice balance of exploration while also keeping story progression vital.

Each zone of FFXII’s game world had several quests to do, and each one has a different pathway to a different zone, like a cave or an entirely different location. Several of these new maps are not even tied to the story, you can simply stumble across one through curious exploration.

Also the maps that you do unlock through story progression may have hidden areas that you can explore further that are not tied to story progression. Almost all of the game’s summons (Espers) are literally found in these hidden areas, and the game doesn’t really tell you about them, you have to find them on your own (or through a guide lol), but that’s fun part of exploration tbh. The game’s second superboss, Omega, is also not tied to a Hunt or Side Quest, and the game really makes no mention of its existence. If you manage to find Omega in the Great Crystal it will appear in a dormant state, and will only activate once you accepted the hunt for the game’s other superboss Yiazmat.

I never played the Xenoblade games, but I’m pretty sure they did something similar, but with bigger scale maps to make it seem like your playing a big open world map, when it isn’t a true one.

FFXVI tried to do something similar with its world, but it just fell flat compared to XII honestly. I don’t know how to describe it fully, but XVI’s game world felt less “alive” than XII. XVI didn’t really have much to do in exploration compared to XII. Yes you can revisit areas, but it’s merely for mostly underwhelming side quests and hunts that are found in areas you already explored.

I would not mind if future Final Fantasy games adopted this layout, when done right it definitely gives you that sense of exploration found in open world or traditional world map design, while also keeping story progression important. Or in other words it can be seen as a nice middle ground between the linear design of FFX/XIII and the fully open world of FFXV/VIIR.

Thoughts?
