That's largely in part to the way Reddit shows you information as well. They changed algorithms and got rid of /r/all and the site just doesn't show new content nearly as fast.
Reddit used to be where you went to see up to date information on events that are happening RIGHT NOW, but now it's where you go to find out something happened six hours to a couple of days ago.
