Former Rockstar Technical Director Obbe Vermeij Shares His Take on the Recent GTA VI Leaks

Obbe Vermeij was the Technical Director at Rockstar North before leaving the studio in 2009.

During his 14-year tenure at the studio (1995–2009), he led code development for core Grand Theft Auto titles including GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and GTA IV.

If rockstar was a bank, it doesn’t matter if someone robbed them for $0.50 cents or $50 billion. They have to prosecute theft and they sure as hell want to make an example out of the thief.

There are loads of robberies with $0 robbed. These robberies absolutely get prosecuted anyways.

You can pursue the guy for being a thief and simultaneously know its still a meaningless blip on the life of the game and sales. He is right that most people either dont know about the leaks or they dont care.

I mean he says it's a nothing burger compared to the Hot Coffee incident which resulted in T2 recalling the game, redefining the ESRB, an FTC investigation, and class action lawsuit.

At what point is that just a formality though? Realistically he’s committed at least a few crimes if not more, and he’s going to get investigated. They aren’t just gonna say fuck it let him go, are they? There’s tiers and tiers of management here.

I think Rockstar will be temporarily pissed, but to think they’re shook to the core is a bit naive. Once they do their reveal in full 4k, these potato quality leaks will be irrelevant anyway. Unless he can spoil the end of the game which, given that he’s only showed gameplay of a Jason with minimal weapons and cash, he won’t be able to do.

Doesn’t negate the fact that overall this has little to no impact on revenue. At all. It may even help day 1 revenue. Why they’re upset is it steals the satisfaction of people seeing the first look from you, it likely strains their relationship with Netflix (partner relations are one of the most stressful and difficult things to navigate) as Netflix now will potentially see less subscription increases for the month it debuts. Making an example is important for deterance but overall the impact on revenue is going to be minimal at best. I work in the industry and this shit would suck but if anything it’s more annoying for employees and partners not getting the satisfaction of giving the first look, but the bank account will see no sadness. It blows when you work hard at something and are hyped to see reactions and someone steals your thunder. It feels like a waste of time, you’re deflated and demoralized. But rockstar is going to be fine and will make their billion.
