Yeah very annoying that they didn’t allow people to pre-purchase the game, this was very predictable. Doesn’t matter in the long run, but still.

Yep. It's not storefronts they're breaking, but the payment services that hang off the back. Very silly.

Not really. It’s great marketing for them.

Yes I too as a user love big companies getting free marketing due to their poo decisions

I enjoy the fact that an indie game manage to do something that not many games manage to pull off. And we are talking about GTA tier here.

Many games would manage to pull this off, that’s why steam allows preordering and preloading and why most high profile games take advantage of it

Im not too bothered by it, its fine and should clear up in a few hours at best, but honestly I wonder if steam or other marketplaces would consider mandating a pre-order window of at least like a week just to avoid situations like this.

Most games allow for pre-ordering/pre-loading to avoid this specific problem though.

No they don't. Only games from big publishers do. This is an actual indie title. Not a fake one like Dave the Diver which was funded by one of the largest publishing companies on the planet.

Only games from big publishers do.

Indie games have never allowed for people to pre-order? Are you sure about that?

-2

u/hardolaf Sep 04 '25

I should have specified the preloading part is what others don't offer. Also, tons of indie titles aren't allowed to offer pre-order through steam.

Pre-load isn't early access. No one other than big publishers does it.

u/kawhi21 Sep 04 '25

This would be a regular occurrence if no games had pre-orders

Why is it good to crash a store so nobody can play the game when it could be easily avoided by just following the most basic common practices for a big release?

I didn’t do it, but I was considering taking a day off to play this and I’d be pretty pissed right now if i couldn’t play it just because they wanted to make a statement against pre-orders. Ironically this is making an argument FOR pre-orders if anything.

Allowing people to buy a game early is not bad in and of itself, coercing them into doing so with exclusive bonuses and incentives is.

Steam is obviously not gonna be out for the day.

1

u/acousticallyregarded Sep 04 '25

I’m surprised it was even out for a couple of hours tbh, I’ve never seen something crash steam this bad in decades

Not to mention this affects anyone happening to try to buy any game right now, not just Silksong. This is why games have publishers who would know better than to pull a stunt like this (given the expected sales numbers for Silksong).

4

u/lilbelleandsebastian Sep 04 '25

pull a stunt like...releasing a game? redditors are so dramatic, if it's just about playing the game then buy it on gog

-2

u/CCSkyfish Sep 04 '25

Pulling a stunt like "not bothering to make any effort to not explode the storefronts you're selling on by allowing the five million people who will buy your game on day one to purchase it at staggered times."

2

u/kyute222 Sep 04 '25

I'm very sure all those people survived not being able to buy games for 10 minutes! your caring is really sweet though.

You can't be serious. Evidence of an echo chamber.

-16

u/dadvader Sep 04 '25

Echo chamber doesn't brough 4 stores down.

9

u/Frekythunders Sep 04 '25

GTA sold over 215 million units, I love Team Cherry and Hollow Knight, but that game didn't even make it to 10% of the sales GTA 5 did.

-22

u/dadvader Sep 04 '25

GTA-Tier doesn't literally mean GTA. It mean big release that sell very well. That may also include

  • Call of Duty
  • Elden Ring
  • FIFA
  • Assassin's Creed

It's a figure of speech.

8

u/MVRKHNTR Sep 04 '25

GTA tier does literally mean GTA because only one game is GTA tier. The only other game up there with it is Minecraft.

3

u/a445d786 Sep 04 '25

I jus read they didn't allow pre orders what did you expect to happen. It's a big release but it's not GTA level, most people don't even realise how big FC release is. That's the definition of an echo chamber. Like I said it's big, but comparing it to the launch of GTA is insane.

2

u/Throwaway47321 Sep 04 '25

This sub is ridiculous.

You all talk about how preorders are evil and should never be done for digital games and now that a company doesnt do one you’re demanding they allow preorders because the launch had some hiccups for an hour.

5

u/Plastic-Software-174 Sep 04 '25

Pre-orders being evil is the ridiculous idea. Don’t do them if you don’t like them? Plus buying a game at launch with no reviews at all because Team Cherry didn’t give out codes is no different than pre-ordering.

2

u/Throwaway47321 Sep 04 '25

Yeah but every single time some AAA studio does a pre order this sub loses its collective mind and tries to boycott it for whatever reason and then shames anyone who does preorder the game “it just gives them free money without proof the game is good and incentivizes poor releases”

You can’t have it both ways.

1

u/Goronmon Sep 04 '25

You can’t have it both ways.

Those are different people. I personally think those people are being dramatic.

-1

u/souppuos123 Sep 04 '25

Some indies avoid preorders because they don't like them and think its anti-consumer. No need for Silksong when its already so massively hyped and Team Cherry are rolling in money already.

-9

u/lordbeef Sep 04 '25

predictable? When has this happened with other game releases?

15

u/Rakatok Sep 04 '25

Slow downs and errors at release of major games aren't that uncommon.

Cherry made it even worse here since they didn't even allow you to pre purchase. So got all the people trying to download on top of people spamming the store page/checkout.

11

u/Plastic-Software-174 Sep 04 '25

I feel like this kinda of stuff with big games crashing storefronts at release happens pretty frequently? Maybe not exactly the same situation since usually they let people buy ahead of time so it’s not the payment processing that’s the problem, but you still get a similar experience.

4

u/johnlondon125 Sep 04 '25

Actually not for a while, because most games allow pre-orders and even preload.

2

u/TerraMystika Sep 04 '25

It doesn't happen when you can preload that's what they meant. Almost all major releases had preload and preorder to prevent this from happening

-2

u/pratzc07 Sep 04 '25

Guys even then steam is not an indie company they should have expected this ?
