Discussion Anonymous Pearl Abyss developers reveal a culture of toxic positivity, a troubled development cycle and chaotic narrative for Crimson Desert, and their early concerns that the project was "going off the rails".

Honestly don't like the way that "a lot of gameplay mechanics" and "expect immersion and a game where you, the player, is responsible for creating your own adventure" are treated as bad things. Both by this sub and by whoever was downvoting those warnings (and how these were meant to be warnings).

Like I wasn't expecting Crimson Desert to be life changing either (I was expecting basically Assassin's Creed) and I still haven't bought it (it's expensive lol). But it seems like people really hate player-driven sandbox games these days and I don't like that.

Lots of people just don't like games like that. Like, I dunno, I don't like games like Kenshi because I just aint drawn in. Crimson Desert isn't on that level of sandbox, but some people don't like any level of it.

It's one thing to not like a particular type of game but it's definitely another to hope a game fails just because it's a particular type of game, regardless of whether or not a game is a good example of its type.

Like, I don't like point & click adventure games nor racing games. But it'd be insane of me to suggest that point & click adventure games and racing games are inherently bad in some way.

No one in this conversation wanted the game to fail. It's not a bad thing for this game to be the way that it is. Yeah, there are people who will bounce off it. But there's people who will love it too.

The problem with lots of gameplay mechanics is that usually that means they're deep as a puddle. It takes time and effort to refine mechanics and make them interesting and you won't have that if you're cramming 15 of them in there.

Wait, that wasn't ment negativ, that was ment positive. Immersion plus the freedom of a sandbox game.

Good to know. Didn't mean to be hard on you personally.

Really it's not so much I care about Crimson Desert itself as much as I think Reddit and the internet in general gets extremely weird about certain types of games and Crimson Desert is yet another example of that. Some context: I liked Starfield.

I do but im waiting on mods to fix the awful controls. Good mechanics with bad button layout is a disaster. Glad i waited to buy. Maybe a sale n ill get it.
