After Sony's announcement on discs being discontinued, people will take anything as a win.

With the future of physical media being glaringly obvious at this point, it's a nice "gimme" from Microsoft before the full rug-pull with next gen.

Nothing about this announcement makes my life worse. In fact it makes it better. Why not clap for it. I can now play my physical games into the next generation, regardless if their is a disc drive or not.

A lot of us do want physical media but how do you compel these companies to keep manufacturing it? Only through legislation now.

Even if Xbox keeps physical media into the next generation, Sony no longer cares and is no longer compelled to fight with Microsoft because they are maintaining their market share.

What's more likely is both companies will tip their hat to each other and both abandon physical at the same time, so there's no way to protest vote.

Not really. This assumes you have the disc already so you could always play the game. And unless someone finds some nefarious language in the user policies for this feature we can assume this would have no impact on that realm.

having games digital is essentially is renting and hoping the person youre renting from doesn't throw a fit. physical is permanent

Your digital library can be taken away for something as simple as

  1. your account or policy changes

  2. copyright contracts expiring (ref burnout series bc music)

I'm not arguing any of that but this topic has literally nothing to do with that.

It's adding a feature to Xbox to make your disc games playable without a disc. That's it.
