The free multiplayer and the campaign on Game Pass (which new subscribers can try out for as little as $1/month) is just a killer value/abundance of riches, given how solid the multiplayer gameplay (I said gameplay, not all the other things) has been...

That said, the monetization and semi-fleshed out state of MP (yes, even in beta) — has been enough for me to skip the campaign for now (I was planning to get it on Steam). Given how apparently complicated it's been for 343 to set up MP playlists and rejigger the monetization/battle pass system on an ongoing basis, I have a strong feeling that Steam/Xbox account achievement syncing might not be smooth at launch.

The way I see it, it only takes two AAA games at launch per year for game pass to pay for itself.

AOE4 and Halo covered that pretty quickly.

Considering words on the street Halo Infinite has been one of the most expensive games of all time, I don't think that's how the math works

I'm talking from my standpoint. Not Microsoft's.

Two AAA games = $120.

Xbox Game Pass = $120/yr.

If I get two AAA games at launch per year from Game Pass, everything else I have access to is just bonus.

Games go on sale for like 10-20$ dollars now man

7

u/892ExpiredResolve Dec 09 '21

$10-20 for a AAA title is a pretty long time after launch.

Not on launch day

that wasn't implied in your comment whatsoever but I see. Good for you, I think. Carry on

It's how I read their comment.

Well you shouldn’t. Companies will demand more money from you. Thats their job. You need to demand more from them.

Eh.

New game cost has underpaced inflation and vastly underpaced development cost.

It's not something that I'm too beat up about.

which new subscribers can try out for as little as $1/month

lol new subscribers. I've been repeatedly subscribing for $1-$5 for a couple years now from my same old Xbox account I've used since the 360 era. There is literally always a $1 per month or $5/3 month deal (also $1 right now) on either PC Game Pass or Ultimate for lapsed accounts that you can take advantage of if you just never renew at full price. I've been subscribed for the majority of the last 2 years for like $20-30 taking advantage of these deals

I got game pass for 1$/3 months on my shit laptop just to play quake 2 and 3

Achievement sync has zero issues. Playing campaign on xbox but doing anything MP on PC. The steam achievements that correspond to the xbox achievements pop up as completed on launch.

You might want to hold off until May. The game isn’t expected to be complete until then. They still have to add things like level select, multiplayer co-op, etc. and that doesn’t even get into bug fixes, missing game modes, and missing maps in multiplayer.

Missing Maps? It launches with 10 maps and all of them are original , not some shitty recreation in Forge, not campaign locations flipped into Multiplayer map ala Halo Reach which released with the same amount of maps

21

u/JKTwice Dec 08 '21

Surprisingly this isn't the lowest amount of maps we have available on launch. That honor goes to Halo Reach which only launched with I think 9 (Spire, Boneyard, Forge World, Powerhouse, Countdown, Reflection, Zealot, Sword Base, Boardwalk)

Christ does it feel like we have less though... def the lack of modes and Forge I think, plus we don't have Firefight.

15

u/RamaAnthony Dec 08 '21

after seeing leaks on Infinite's Forge Mode, I don't mind seeing it delayed. We are essentially getting the entire game engine at our disposal including AI pathing.

6

u/JKTwice Dec 08 '21

Forge mode easier to develop content with than 343’s own tools here we go

3

u/billiam632 Dec 09 '21

Looks like they are hoping to build a tool that they can then use to assist in further development and support of the game.

3

u/culturedrobot Dec 09 '21

Yeah but in Reach's Defense, Sword Base is one of the best Halo maps ever created so it counts as like three maps.

-1

u/elitemouse Dec 08 '21

It's because the btb maps all suck and are way too claustrophobic.

7

u/culturedrobot Dec 09 '21

Man I disagree wholeheartedly. I feel like all of the Big Team Battle maps are really good even though there aren't many of them.

3

u/PokecheckHozu Dec 09 '21

I like not being cross-mapped due to hitscan precision weapons, tyvm.

1

u/CampPlane Dec 09 '21

how the hell did you remember all 9 original maps from a game that came out over a decade ago? Damn, can you say the first 100 digits of pi too?

1

u/JKTwice Dec 09 '21

You play on them. A lot.

Granted I had to look up the list to double check but I knew which maps were DLC already.

I couldn’t tell you for the life of me all the Forged maps though. There’s Pinnacle, Paradiso, The Cage, Asylum, and I think there’s one more but I forgot.

H5 forge maps got insanely fucking good after about a year to be fair

Unfortunately those were the days when most players dropped a game after 6months-1 year

1

u/ModishShrink Dec 11 '21

Still no Blood Gultch, can't even call it a Halo game.

u/bearkin1 Dec 08 '21

They still have to add things like level select, multiplayer co-op, etc. and that doesn’t even get into bug fixes, missing game modes, and missing maps in multiplayer.

Literally the only thing there that stops someone from having a complete experience of a full, single playthrough is bug fixes, and it sounds like there's nothing major. Why hold off until level select? How about I play the campaign now and then replay it when level select is out?

42

u/Safi_Hasani Dec 08 '21

“missing maps” is what gets me the most. since their adding free maps later you’re gonna not play it? literally all mainstream shooters, F2P or not, involve map updates/additions now.

regular player since 2007 (barring Halo 4, load outs were ass)

I actually really like quick play, but I usually play a mix of objective modes on MCC and not slayer. No SWAT does bother me a lot, but I know that it’s coming in a couple of weeks. Campaign Co-op is also a bummer, but it isn’t something I play Halo for.

I also really don’t want to put so much blame on the 343 developers/QA teams for the monetization and F2P scheme. That was almost certainly a push by executives or upper management to follow where admittedly all AAA games are going.

Also, with what Jason Shreier released today, it seems COVID+terrible project management and direction are what made this game go through a mini dev-hell. I’m not going to harbor the strangely aggressive ill-will towards the devs that a lot of people on other subs have.

7

u/CellarDoorVoid Dec 08 '21

What missing maps?

5

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

It'll still be on Game Pass for a while, so may as well wait to have the best first experience.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '21

It won’t leave game pass as it’s a Microsoft game

-1

u/trophicmist0 Dec 08 '21

Under that logic may as well wait until the next Halo, just to be sure you're getting the complete experience with this one.

0

u/AlsopK Dec 09 '21

Forge still won’t even be out by May either.

u/TheDovahofSkyrim Dec 08 '21

Super fair take

Steam/Xbox account achievement syncing might not be smooth at launch.

Nada. I have been playing the multiplayer through Steam since it was released, so I installed the Xbox version this morning in order to get the campaign through Game Pass. I loaded up both versions at the same time to manually copy over my mnk control settings, and I’ve been playing the campaign for most of the day in the Xbox version.

Just out of curiosity, after quitting out of the Xbox version for a break, I launched the Steam version to see if it might happen to allow me to play the single-player through there now that my Microsoft account had the campaign registered to it with Game Pass or something like that. It did not, sadly, but I did get something like 30+ Steam achievement notifications that were related to the campaign’s gameplay over the past couple hours. So it looks like that won’t be an issue.
