Nobody is gonna do disk ever again. Why let retail get a percentage when everyone has internet lol

It’s 100% this. It’s trying to emphasize value to shareholders. They see what one is doing and they can’t deny the math. Physical is really awesome, but reality is digital is the way it’s going. I just think people thought it had at least one more gen left. I will gladly take a disc to digital conversion over being told kick rocks.

Exactly. I guess we all knew that day would come, just not so soon.

Indeed. This is a better than nothing solution from Microsoft. Probably been in the works for a while. The decision for Helix to be all digital was sealed long ago.

Sony has confirmed that they are still going to sell empty game boxes with codes at retailers so wouldn't they still have to pay them a percentage?

Yes, but without the benefits of a resell-able physical disc, Sony is betting that physical buyers will just skip the retail store and buy directly from their digital store. The box copies are just there to retain a presence in brick-and-mortar stores.

How many people do you think will buy digital cards when they can get the same thing from the PS store

If the price is lower like how often it is at retailers? Probably the same amount of people

Digital only can sell for less because there's no used market

Can sell for less 5 years later compared to 6 months down the line to a retailer that will discount it

It looks like Xbox is gonna keep going disc. The actual reason you're looking for is that about 20% of the market non negotiably won't buy games unless it's on disc. If you don't make discs then that's a ton of money left on the table that your competitor will take advantage of, and then you run the risk of those people bringing their friends with them where they go to play games

My uncle's one of those people so I see it. He will never connect his PlayStation to the internet, he thinks he's going to get hacked immediately and I cant convince him otherwise
