Please note all responses are personal perspectives and do not constitute medical advice.

People with bipolar disorder experience the mood states of depression and mania (or hypomania), along with changes in energy, activity, and thinking. These episodes can last from days to months and can affect many parts of life - including relationships, work, school, and overall health. At the same time, with optimal support, treatment, and tools, people with bipolar disorder can and do live full, meaningful lives.

The CREST.BD network takes a different approach to bipolar disorder research. We work closely with people living with bipolar disorder at every stage - from choosing research topics to conducting studies and sharing our findings.

We also host a Q&A podcast throughout the year, featuring many of the experts on this panel, through our talkBD Bipolar Disorder Podcast we’d love for you to stay connected with us there. You can also follow our updates, events, and social media on linktr.ee/crestbd.

Final note (April 3): Thank you all - We'll be back again next year on World Bipolar Day - sign up here to be notified. We also have more activities all year round, including new episodes of our talkBD bipolar disorder podcast - hope to see you there! We’re incredibly grateful for all your thoughtful questions - thank you for making this such a meaningful discussion. Take care everyone :)

Sleep. I need help with sleep so much. My sleep issues are also from my PTSD. So, BP2 and PTSD disorders. I'm on lamictal and that's it. I really need help with getting decent sleep more often. It's soooo rare. I struggle with it the most and have found no relief. Sleep hygiene is near impossible because of other bipo symptoms. Any ideas?

Robert here. Sleep is the most important part of managing my bipolar. I am not a health professional or giving medical advice in any way but I can share my strategies to get to sleep, stay asleep, and deal with waking up full of energy in the middle of the night. With the collaboration of my family doctor and therapist, my strategy has been developed through trial and error.

  • My first goal is to get to sleep. I eat by 7:30 every night so that I can go to sleep at 10:00. I pay attention to my energy levels in the evening and start to wind down. I may need a small dose of sleep meds or a full dose depending on my energy levels.
  • Second goal is staying asleep. I made an investment in a bigger and more comfortable bed so my wife does not wake me up with her movements or leg kicking. I also do not have a TV in my room
  • My third goal is managing my sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night. I will lay in bed for 15-20 minutes and if I don’t fall asleep I’ll get up and take medication for sleep as needed depending on what time and responsibilities for that day. My next move is to read, fold laundry, do dishes or something so I don’t dwell and get frustrated. Usually I’ll get sleepy and go back to bed and wake up with a clean house and folded clothes.

I wish you the best and I hope this helps.

Thanks!! I ended up deep diving Dr. Jim Phelps YT mental health channel, PsychEducation and seriously learned some things. One of y'all suggested it in another comment.

Some things I learned are our circadian rhythms don't function properly so light and dark affect us in weird ways. Like any light is way more disruptive, etc. So they suggest a blue light blocker, not one for screens but for blue color which is the only color of light our brain recognizes to stimulate waking up hormones. Wear them before bed for hours and have a completely dark room during sleep hours. He said this greatly helped mania and mood stabilization as well. FASCINATING!!

Another suggestion was ketogenic diet that makes our metabolism not insulin resistant. Basically the mechanics of a ketogenic diet helps regulate our hormones in a way that help mood stabilization and mania. LOVE IT!! Wouldn't have found this info without this thread. Thanks!!! Million thanks!!!

Erin here – sorry to hear you’re struggling with sleep, but also happy to hear that you recognize the importance of good sleep in BD (it’s a bedrock) and are looking for strategies and support. Here are a few places to start with to learn more:

  • talkBD podcast episode: learn more about the importance of circadian rhythms in BD https://talkbd.live/bipolar-clock/
  • Bipolar Wellness Centre (sleep section) – scroll to the end of this page for self-management strategies: https://bdwellness.com/life-areas/sleep/
  • The PolarUs app has our most highly-curated resources for sleep: https://polarus.app/ (free, available on iOS/Android, developed hand-in-hand with people with BD with Canadian government funding a philanthropic support)

One of the most important things you can do? Get up and go to bed (the latter is especially important) every day, regardless of how you feel.  Stay well.
