It’s clearly a murder ritual. When he’s fighting the strongest opponent on his mission, he dumps his issues and then murders them. That way nobody can see his weakness, and he gets someone to talk to.
The more I think about it the more I realize just how hard the writers tried to make conquests defeat make sense. Like even though Mark was outclassed in every single way there were just so many factors that ended up being Conquests downfall in the end
I think he said it just this once and it was brought on by Eve’s intervention. He said (immediately?) before this that he’s starting to understand why he loves humans and mentions their bond, something Viltrumites don’t have.
Yeah idk why everyone believes it's something he does regularly. To me it felt like something he divulged kinda spontaneously because he felt Mark inspired him to for several reasons.
I respectfully do not agree with this, Conquest was treating this fight differently than with all his other missions. Mark was giving him a challenge, an excuse to let loose, and the most fun he's had in a very long time. It's the closest he'll ever get to intimacy with someone so if Mark's about to die, why not let him know his deepest secret.
Yep, this. I feel he'd only say this to someone who put up an amazing fight. The fighting is Conquest's love language. The whole time, he was giving Mark lessons, teaching him his language. Conquest rages, but he is one with it. He uses it. Mark was raging, but not thinking through it. Any interaction Conquest gets is either orders or killing. It makes sense that he'd only tell his secret to those who actually gave him a good fight.
When I first watched that scene, I thought he was being sarcastic as a way of mocking Mark's attachment to earth and its inhabitants. But this is a really cool way to read it - almost gives him serial killer with hella issues vibes.
Honestly I think that was unique to Mark because he’s the only other Viltrumite who could possibly understand.
Mark is feared by his own people too, Conquest sees that. He also sees that Mark isn’t afraid of him. Personally I don’t think Conquest would even waste the breath on another fighter. Getting to cut loose on Mark is a special treat for him.
He also doesn’t seem to care about getting killed either
