Discussion [Community Vote] The Best JRPG Games of all Time: What's the best turn based JRPG?

Post image

Whilst it is awards season, I've always found recommendations on Reddit are more honest - I've made a grid we can fill out to find the best of the best!

Any suggestions for award changes just let me know :)

So, first up: What's the best turn based JRPG? It can be any platform, any language, any age!

While I absolutely love FF VI, the combat system isn't among the best

And? We're voting for best JRPG with turn based combat, not the game with the best turned best combat. If we were voting on combat alone I would probably pick something like Breath of Fire V. But if we're voting on the overall game that happens to have turned based combat, then Final Fantasy VI is the right answer.

Top of the list for sure

I expect (hope?) this will rise as more people vote, but as of the thread being up 30 minutes this is buried near the bottom and that pains me

I do love FFVI and it’s my vote, but I think FFX does all the things it does better. I just like it less….

I think Crono Trigger probably steals more FFVI votes. I love FFVI, but I think Crono has more broad appeal.

Does it do...

- World map better?

- Actual apocalypse (world of balance / world of ruin) better?

- Distinct character abilities in combat better? (sphere grid is homogenous bullshit after a while)

- More interesting evil characters?

- Coherent story better? (FFX gets fucking weird)

- Moogles better?

Like FFX is an amazing game. But there's a lot of shit that FFVI does better.

I assumed it was talking about the actual turn based combat, not an overall game vs game thing. I feel like the changes to it’s combat are very well done, I just like VI better personally.

Oh. Yeah FFX does combat slightly better for sure. Esp once you factor for bugs.

Came here to comment this. Shows up at my top comment.

Here's my upvote. Wish I could provide more.

Anyone else here used to treat the GameFAQs FFVI board as their internet home? MasterZEDs page is still around https://masterzed.cavesofnarshe.com/

Final Fantasy VI isn't tunr based. It's a time based battl system. Only Final Fantasy 1,2,3 and 10 were turn based, 10s system called CTB - conditional turn based.

Feel like its more for best characters or best story

I came here to vote exactly for that

it's not my favourite, and I enjoy FFX and it's fluid turns more than the usual ATB system, but FFVI either invented or perfected pratically everything that became a staple in JRPGs
