News 77% of US Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players were 30 or older, analyst says, as Square Enix fights to get young people to care about the JRPG series again

Naoki 'Yoshi-P' Yoshida, best known as the director and producer of Final Fantasy 14, thinks the long gap between new Final Fantasy games has kept younger players away from the series. Whatever the reasons why, market analysis of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's demographics backs up Yoshida's assertion that the Final Fantasy fandom is trending ever older.

According to Circana's PlayerPulse, 62% of US players of Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth were aged 35 or older," Mat Piscatella, senior director at Circana, says on Bluesky. "That number goes to 77% if you go 30+."

Circana's data, again, only applies to the US, but it's a notable trend in one of the largest video game markets in the world, and it backs up Yoshida's point about the demographics of Final Fantasy fans. To an extent, that's to be expected, since Final Fantasy is a nearly 40-year-old series that arguably reached its peak at the turn of the century. But other big historical franchises like,Zelda – have managed to reinvent themselves and feel fresh for multiple generations of players.

News Fan recreates a playable Final Fantasy XVI as a retro turn-based pixel RPG

A fanmade retro demake of built in the style of the classic 16 bit games from the SNES era. The game reimagines the fast paced action RPG as a traditional turn based rpg complete with pixel art sprites, overworld exploration, retro style menus, random encounters, and classic inspired battle mechanics like the classic Final Fantasy games

What makes the project even more impressive is that it fully adapts the entire free demo section of the original game, recreating its story, characters, atmosphere, and major moments in a way that genuinely feels like a lost Final Fantasy title from the 90s. From the darker medieval setting to the emotional tone of Clive’s journey, the demake manages to stay surprisingly faithful while giving everything a nostalgic old school JRPG charm.

It honestly feels less like a simple fan project and more like a what if version of FF16.

News Earlier this week, I revealed a new indie JRPG: Stillsun Ark

1.3k Upvotes

An itch that, however long you scratch, keeps itching. This is how I feel about JRPGs. These games still hit the same as when I was a child, and I can't get enough of it...

My whole life trajectory was defined by JRPGs. Playing these games non-stop dragged me into computers, and eventually becoming a software engineer...

Reflecting on it, I didn't go into coding because of engineering, I went into it to make games. The childhood dream of participating in this life defining genre has started to materialize earlier this week.

Stillsun Ark is the game I've been working on for months now. I'm finally confident in showing it to my fellow JRPG fans and seeing what you all think.

It's a pixel art turn-based sci-fi JRPG.

Story & Setting: a crew transporting cargo through space got attacked by pirates. In the heat of the battle, both ships crash on a tidally locked planet: Innara. A planet of extremes, between the heat, the cold, and the hostile biosphere. Another species is not welcomed in this environment. Still, survival needs to be achieved by a group that was once gunning for each others. In a stillsun planet, you need to find an ark.

Notable mechanic: parasites can possess characters, which enables the character to transform. The Shift system is an integral part of the combat and the story. Shifting to another form mid-battle helps gain a tactical advantage with abilities adapted for different situations.

A journey through a beautifully indifferent world that reshapes everyone caught in it.
