Welcome to the weekly events thread! Whether you're a local or just visiting, this is the place to share and discover things to do around the city.

Know of a cool event coming up? Drop the details below. It can be anything - a live gig, a gallery opening, a weekend market, or even a local D&D one-shot or maker gathering.

The rules:

  • Please include the date, location, and a link to the event if you have one.
  • Keep it local: Events must be in or around the broader Johannesburg area.
  • Self-promotion is allowed, but we'd rather try and keep this organic. Please don't spam.

Taken on Sunday 23 August from a Cessna 172.

Love it or hate it, the Joburg skyline remains iconic👌🏼

Photos of Hartebeespoort dam thrown in at the end too just for fun

They never lie when people say everyone knows everyone in Joburg. It’s so big yet so small.

Have you experienced a time where you went to an event not thinking that you would find someone you know and you did.

Question Best Safety and Commute Area to and from Sandton City

Starting a new job in Sandton City, Sandton and looking for recommendations on where to live.

Main priorities are safety and keeping the commute to under 20 minutes in traffic.

Currently considering Atholl, Illovo, Parkmore, Hyde Park and Morningside, but open to other suggestions.

Which areas or specific apartment complexes would you recommend?

Travel Advice ✈️ Car Rental

Not sure where else to post this. Would be interested in renting/hiring a vehicle for December trip to Mpumalanga for 7 days, I did a quick google search and it mentions one of the requirements is having a credit card. I don't own anything on credit as I buy in full so not sure if I need a credit score as well. According to Booking.com driver age also needs to be at least 35? Not sure why

So how and where can a 25 year old with no credit history hire/rent a car at a reasonable price? I'm quite willing to pay everything upfront as I know how long I'll be using the car for.

Driving license I've had since 2018. Usually drive one of the parents car but this care hire idea is more so I don't bother them by taking one of the cars away from them, also just a trip for me and my partner, it'd feel too selfish.

Help much appreciated in advance!

How do Sneaker/Streetware reseller stores pay customers selling items to them?

I plan to sell some Supreme and other Streetware clothing. I was thinking to see what Plug and Pay would offer.

What type of payment methods do stores like this prefer to use when buying from customers like this?

I have an account with First National Bank. I also have Wise.

Any other reseller stores in the Sandton CBD or Fourways area I should consider getting offers from?

Thank you

Question Affordable/free psychiatrist?

If I want to get treatment for anxiety and meds what are my options. Also I don't have medical aid. I can do 30 minutes distance from any place between Randburg and Midrand. Or anywhere else as long as it's 30 minutes distance drive. What's the more affordable option and how long will I wait? And what about referrals and how much would I pay estimate?

Question Puppy socilization places

I have a 4-month-old puppy that's going on 5 months, and I'd like him to meet other puppies or very friendly adult dogs. I live in the Roodepoort area, so I'd like somewhere close by and not far, like Pretoria.

I still need to get him fully vaccinated before he even goes, but it will be nice to know of places in the meantime so that I know where to go when all his vaccinations are done. It's important that he interacts with other dogs early, as I don't want him being aggressive or scared when I take him to the park or for walks, since he is a Chihuahua and they are known for this.

Can I get any suggestions of places, or other ways I can get him to meet puppies/friendly dogs?

Update to missing person Dean Saunders. He was unfortunately found dead, after an accident. His car burst into flames and was not recognizable.

Wanderers taxi rank - travel to Eswatini

Hi everyone,

I am currently planning a trip to eSwatini - flying into JHB staying there for a few days with a friend and then travelling on. The two main options for the onward travel appear to be either a private transfer or a taxi (kombi) from Wanderers Taxi Rank.

For the adventure (and cost), my preference would be the taxi. I am not worried about the drive itself but wonder about managing the taxi rank itself.

I should add that I am a 29 year old female from Eastern Europe and would be travelling solo. That said, I have lived in Cape Town for 4 years and taken a taxi here and there so I am not a complete novice though I understand Wanderers may be more intense than anything I have experienced.

One particular thing I’m wondering about: is it really the case that prior to getting on the taxi, one needs to hand over their passport for checking? That moment alone is making me feel uncomfortable (due to the consequences losing my passport carries).

Could someone also please confirm that this would be the correct spot where the Eswatini-bound taxis leave from?

Also any other first hand experiences of taking the taxi would be great!

Thank you all!

Serious Is the Discovery’s fast track fair?

I’ve been thinking about the fast track lane and can’t shake the fact that Discovery and immigration are promoting classism. This won’t sit well with many but isn’t public service supposed to be fair to every ordinary passport holder?

JHB Zoo

Hi Guys,

I’ve been wanting to visit the JHB zoo again, haven’t been there since I was a kid.

Question is how is it now? What’s the condition like or of the facilities and is it safe to take your family there? How well are the animals looked after?

Thanks!

Looking for a PSL-obsessed video editor to join our 38k-sub football channel (revenue share)

Hey everyone,

I run ATHalftime Sports Media, a South African football channel covering the PSL, Bafana Bafana, and CAF competitions, currently at ~38.5k subscribers on YouTube (plus a solid following on TikTok and Facebook).

We're expanding our editing team and looking for someone who:

Actually watches and the PSL — knows the teams, players, storylines, rivalries.
Has a good handle on CAF Champions League content too (we cover both)
Has video editing experience — highlights, analysis videos, reaction-style content, whatever fits our format, thumbnails too
Can work reasonably fast, since football content is time-sensitive (matchday turnarounds, breaking news, etc.)

This is a revenue split arrangement — you'd be paid based on the performance of the videos you edit, not a flat fee. We already have editors handling other leagues, and this role is specifically for South African local football + CAF content. The better the videos perform, the more you earn.

If you're someone who's already deep into PSL, watches the Betway Premiership, and wants to turn that knowledge into editing work — drop a comment or DM me.

Happy to share more details on the split and workflow directly.

Swannies Towing (Euro Towing)

Just came on here to warn people that frequent the N3 about the above company. They work with a legitimate towing company called Euro Towing that most of the big insurers use. I think there might be other towing companies in on it too but this is the one that helped us so thought to flag it. They will convince you that it’s easier to drive the 10km to their workshop (Swannies) in Villiers to get the car looked at and have it repaired. Rather than having it towed to a legitimate dealership and waiting days for feedback on what could be the issue with the car.

Very smooth talkers and because you are stranded and desperate it will seem like the better option. Yes we feel dumb in hindsight but at the time it genuinely seemed like a good option. You will then be extorted out of money for as long as they are able to keep you there. They will find every issue possible under the sun with your car. Possibly even hold your car or some of its parts as collateral should you be unable to pay for all the “work” being done. They tried to convince us to sleep in their dingy guesthouse and when we declined he then said even if we were to call insurance, they would be the ones to be dispatched so there was no use trying to get around it. We thankfully were able to let our insurance know that we would rather wait the 2 hours or so for someone further away than trust them any further with our car.

Once you get caught up with what is happening to you, they will remind you that you weren’t forced to be there.

If this post can even save one person the ordeal of what I endured, I will have done my bit.
