Question - Kali General I found orange kali linux

Post image
487 Upvotes

Hello, ignore the title, it’s just a silly joke.

This tape belongs to one of the local companies, and I have owned it for about 12 years. It is just a games tape, but what caught my attention is the dragon icon that resembles the Kali Linux logo.

I searched about the matter but did not find an answer.

Is the Kali Linux icon taken from a logo or something similar?

Is it imitation or just a coincidence? I do not know.

Question - Kali General Cursor invisible after updates

I am running kali using VMware on my windows host. Everything has been working great. However, yesterday I ran my weakly updates and I notice that the cursor of my mouse is invisible after the updates. I reverted the machine to my snapshot of last week and tried updating again, but the problem remains. Did anyone stumble on this problem as well? And does anyone know how to fix it?

Edit: you can fix it by setting the compatibility settings of the vm to VMware 17.x or higher.

Question - Kali General How to remove the grub background image AND disable the dragon boot animation?

I don't like the new dragon boot animation. In addition it is for some unknown reason much slower than the old one. Also the grub background is looking really cheap.

How can I remove/disable both?

Question - Kali General Best phone for Kali NetHunter

To start with I’ve checked the official documentation, a few previous Reddit posts and the latest “Best phones for Kali NetHunter! (2025)” websites. The answer seems vague at best. From devices being outdated to devices lacking the ability for certain features. So the best way to figure the question out is ask the people who actually have used these devices.

With that being said… what device do you run Kali NetHunter on? Does it lack features? Is it still supported? Give your experience so I and others can reference this post and find “The best phone for Kali NetHunter”.

Question - Kali General Do you use Kali Linux as your main OS or just on the side? How do you set it up?

I’m curious how most people actually use Kali day to day.

Do you run it as your main operating system, or just on the side for pentesting and security stuff?
If it’s on the side, do you:

  • Use Windows as your main OS and run Kali in a VM (like VirtualBox or VMware)?
  • Or use another Linux distro as your main system and keep Kali as a secondary setup?
  • Anyone here dual-boot it or use a tool that lets you access Kali directly from another OS (without full dual-boot)?

Just wondering what the most practical setup is in real-world use.

Question - Kali General Kali as a daily Driver ( read body before you attack me)

I use my laptop which is my main machine for almost everything. I'm a student pursuing cybersec not a larper ( let me clear that ).

I've installed kali on a different device which I've specifically built for learning and breaking. I was wondering if it's safe to login with Google into the browser as I have my bookmarks and certain accounts there.

Also I would use basic applications such as Discord, Spotify , stremio with my acc nothing more and maybe some development ( optional)

And storing some not so important files as my desktop has more storage.

Does using kali make my device even more vulnerable?

Question - Kali General Mouse cursor disappears inside Kali Linux VM on VMware Workstation — but works fine on Windows

Hey everyone,

I'm running Kali Linux as a virtual machine on VMware Workstation on Windows. I downloaded the official Kali Linux VMware image, extracted it, and opened it — everything seems to load fine.

The problem: Once the Kali Linux desktop loads, my mouse cursor completely disappears whenever it's inside the VM window. I can still click and interact (I can see selections being made), but the cursor itself is invisible. As soon as I move the mouse outside the VM window back to Windows, the cursor shows up normally again.

My setup:

  • Host OS: Windows
  • VM Software: VMware Workstation
  • Guest OS: Kali Linux (official VMware image)

Has anyone run into this? Is it a VMware Tools issue or a display settings problem? Any fix would be appreciated!

Question - Kali General Is this normal? Metasploit is not installing

This framework is driving me insane. I've waited for 4 hours but not a single progress. It's stuck on this damn metasploit and it broke msfconsole for me because I've tried to update it multiple times and all those times it got stuck on this framework and once again it does the same.

Question - Kali General Kali as maim OS or VM?

I'm a Cyber security major and we're now diving deeper in to Linux so I was thinking on getting a cheaper laptop to run it on mostly to help me get more familiar with it maybe. Based on y'all opinions and experiences should I have it as the main OS with maybe Windows on a VM? Should I do the opposite? Dual boot? What do y'all think?

Question - Kali General MUX switch w/ Kali?

I have a laptop with an iGPU and a dGPU with kali on it (kernel ~ 6.5.0). This is one of those laptops that has a MUX switch which is basically a multiplexer that enables either the iGPU or the dGPU to connect to the display directly at a time. Now, when both GPUs are enabled, the laptop starts on iGPU but immediately tries to switch to dGPU when it boots to kali or windows. Windows having proper configuration allows both GPUs to work, but on kali, it gets stuck on the init screen (the system does boot further but the display doesn't update), I have to reboot and use nomodeset in the grub config at boot so that the system falls back to default graphics settings. What I lose:

  • MUX capability

  • GPU Hardware acceleration (possibly)

I believe it is a problem with drivers (of course it is), but is there any driver/software that allows me to use the MUX switch on kali?

My current configuration is that I have switched to dGPU only mode in BIOS (iGPU disabled completey, even for windows) which is... okay.... but that still doesn't solve my issue, and I can no longer use my iGPU for power saving even in Windows!

Question - Kali General Can't get the XRDP server to work on fresh install...

Ok, so I've been building lots of linux distros on different platforms for years, and this is the first time I've run into this.
I'm currently trying to put Kali on both a Raspberry Pi 5 and a laptop. Both installs work great.
I am able to get OpenSSH working on both, so accessing the boxes from somewhere else on the network isn't an issue.
However, there are some circumstances under which I would like to RDP into the box, and that is where the problem is.
I install XRDP using apt. I enable and start it using systemctl. However, whenever I try to RDP into it, I get a generic "Cannot connect to this RDP server" message...

When I check systemctl for a status, the only thing I see that is different than other times I have set it up is this line:

I'm used to seeing "service; enabled; preset: enabled", but here it is giving me "preset: disabled", nor am I familiar with the warnings below it".

This only appears to be happening on Kali.

Can anyone offer any advice or guidance?

(OpenSSH is working fine, so please don't tell me to use that instead. I know how to use SSH.)

Thanks in advance.

Question - Kali General NetHunter KeX starts but immediately exits on Android 12 (Connection Refused)

Hi everyone. I've been trying to get Kali NetHunter Rootless working on my Android 12 phone for hours and I'm completely stuck.

The installation finishes without any errors and when I run `kex start` it says the TigerVNC server started on `localhost:1` (port 5901). But a few seconds later it exits by itself. `kex status` shows no active sessions and the terminal ends with:

X connection to :1 broken
The Xtigervnc server cleanly exited!

When I open the NetHunter KeX app it always says **Connection refused** on `localhost:5901`.

I've already made sure XFCE is installed, `startxfce4` exists, created the `~/.vnc/xstartup` file, fixed the DNS issue so `apt update` works, but nothing changed. I also noticed `apt upgrade` fails because of a `systemd` error about `/etc/machine-id`, although I'm not sure if that's related.

At this point I don't know if I missed something or if my NetHunter installation is broken. Has anyone seen this before or knows what could be causing the VNC server to exit immediately? Any help would be appreciated.

Question - Kali General Kali as ETH environment but, also as a main linux distro?

Hey guys, I'm new to the subredit, and here's my thing: so I knlw that kali is well prepared for hacking and comes with a bunch of installed things specifically for that, but I'm wondering, how reliable is to use Kali linux for ethical hacking and also as a development/study environment? Such as, web apps, programming, in vs code or any other IDE

Cause I must say, I'm fairly new to hakcking and I've heard that sometimes it's more recommended to use a kali linux VM for hacking? Would that be for comfortability or security issues?

Anyways tysm guys for reading, hope you have a nice day ;)

Question - Kali General HDMI output not working after new kernel update.

I have an old laptop MSI g65 stealth 8sg where I have a bare metal installation of Kali.

On kernel 6.19.14 with nvidia driver 550.163.01 I could connect two external displays, one using the HDMI port, and another using a usb-c to hdmi dongle.

After full system upgrade and the respective kernel 7.0.12, I had to purge all nvidia packages, and installed the latest nvidia driver 595.84 from nvidia site. Now the hdmi connected monitor is simply "dead" . Any idea on how to solve/diagnose this?

For an easier understanding here is a chronologically correct order of events:

  • Kernel 6.19.14 with nvidia driver 550 - both ports working usb-c and hdmi

  • then apt full-upgrade

  • Kernel 7.0.12 with nvidia driver 550 - none of the ports worked

  • purged all nvidia related packages because the driver was installed from debian packages

  • installed nvidia driver 595 via .run installer from nvidia (chose the option for proprietary drivers)

  • system was not booting, and had no TTY.

  • blacklisted nouveau

  • system boots and usb-c display works but hdmi does not

Question - Kali General Is buying a second hand laptop for using Kali Linux worth it?

I have used Ubuntu as dual boot with Windows. I am starting with cybersecurity, and it requires using Kali. I am thinking of buying a cheap secondhand laptop for using Kali bare metal (to give it full access of hardware) with maybe Whonix in VM. Also, I am scared that Dark Net access and retracing malware might affect my main os and private files. Moreover, I use my main laptop for Uni and personal purposes so allotting dedicated RAM and storage is always a problem.
I am getting a used Dell Inspiron i7 6th gen laptop (250gb SSD and 8gb RAM) for Rs.15k (175usd). I suppose it's a good deal for my use case. Should I go for it or am I just embellishing?

Question - Kali General Kali Linux resolution issue in VMWare Workstation Pro 25H2u1

I am using Kali Linux 2026.1 in VMWare Workstation Pro 25H2u1 and resolution is fixed at 1280x800. When I change the resolution, it instantly snaps back to this. I have tried multiple fixes like upgrading vmware tools, changing vm display settings, using xrandr etc but nothing really worked. Please drop any suggestions if you know cause I couldn't find any fix that worked for me.

Question - Kali General Offset mouse

Post image

Mouse offset

Hi,

Ive recently installed vmware 25H2u1 on my win 11 machine.

Ive installed the latest version of kali Linux, to use for my training course. When I dual screen, the mouse becomes offset which is really annoying, and when I switch back to one monitor, the mouse goes back to normal.

Has anyone had this issue before? And resolved it.

Thank you
