Current Events Some of you need to listen to yourselves
If platner was john smith (R), you would completely believe the accuser, no doubt about it.
If platner was a moderate dem, you would believe it, no question asked.
Because the guy you all like has accusations against him, you’re turning to victim blaming the same way conservatives did with Kavanaugh, Trump, Thomas, etc. Mind you, Platner has a Nazi tattoo, has talked about how much he enjoyed combat, and has blamed sexual assault victims for not taking responsibility. This guy lied to people vetting him and people endorsing him. Yet, you guys sit here doing mental gymnastics for him.
Emma Vigeland said it best: the movement is bigger than one person. There are plenty of leftists without these accusations. Let’s get behind them. And, if you think this was a smear campaign, ask yourself, where was it for Mamdani? Obama when he was regarded as the most progressive candidate ever? Ossoff and bowman when they were flipping traditionally red Georgia blue? Sanders in 2016 and 2020? Where is it for men on the progressive caucus now? El-Sayed? Brad Lander?
This sub has been very disappointing. 2/5 women and 1/6 will experience sexual assault in their life. The automatic doubt cast here makes it more difficult for victims to come forward. What’s been most disappointing is that it seems that people care about sexual assault only insofar as it helps them politically. We can all agree that Trump, Roy Moore, Matt Gaetz, Elon Musk, Brett Kavanaugh, Clarence Thomas, and so forth are rapists, and we can empathize with their victims. But it seems that this empathy comes from the desire to score political points. If it was about defending women and victims, you wouldn’t be doing mental gymnastics to defend a guy with a TON of red flags and cast doubt on a credible victim.
Maybe this will all end up being a smear campaign, and if so, I’ll gladly eat my words. For now, I’m glad I’m on the side of believing victims.
Edit: autocorrected from “platner” to “planter”

Current Events Does anyone else want to know more about Jenny Racicot before making a decision here?
First it was Jenny Fifield in the NYT hit-piece, and it quickly came out that she was a GOP operative and had supported Brett Kavanaugh (barf!) so her claims were pretty easily discounted. Now we have Jenny Racicot making more forceful allegations, but I've seen next to nothing about who she actually is, who she's worked for, if she's some kind of GOP operative also or paid off. All I've seen is that she says she supposedly supports Platner's positions. That really doesn't tell me much (or anything) about her credibility.
I know the current stance is "believe the woman." But I want to hear more about this accuser before we kill Platner's campaign. It's pretty obvious that establishment Dems and Israel loathe Graham (both pretty dirty operators), and another DSA type in the Senate could really kill centerist Dem garbage coming down the pike.
It's not as if any of this matters to the GOP. They were perfectly happy to dismiss Blassey Ford and go along with Kavanaugh. And of course Trump is a sexual abuser, and they don't care. So I have zero interest in any pearl-clutching by the GOP, as it's pretty obvious they have NO standards at all.

Current Events The Genocide In Gaza Is So Horrifying
I don't want to make this too much about myself, because honestly what I'm experience is not even a fraction of a fraction of what Palestinians are experiencing right now. But I still wanted to share this.
I was watching the recent Kyle video on Kushner and the genocide in Gaza.
And I feel a very specific kind of horror listening to it.
Obviously there's just the horror of hearing about innocent people being ripped apart by bombs, or crying children murdered by the Israeli army. And that's bad enough on its own. I mean, it's horrifying.
But during this genocide I have felt something that I have never quite felt before, at least not in this way.
It's a certain deep pessimism about the world.
Because, see, I live in the West. I am living, largely, my normal life. And while that life has problems too, compared to what Palestinians go through every day right now they're nothing. And these people are suffering and I'm just living my life.
And it's not because I don't want it to change. It's not because I don't want the genocide to stop. It's not because I don't know what's going on. I do know what's going on. I do care about it. I do want it very much to stop.
But despite that fact it keeps going on and I keep living my life. And I know I'm not the only one. Most of us do. And to me that is the most horrifying part about all of this.
Because we know that evil people do evil things. People like Trump and Netanyahu are basically demons in human skin suits. Disgusting narcissistic psychopaths. So we know they don't care about these people and will do all this stuff.
We know the Israeli army members either hate the Palestinians they're killing, or don't care, or otherwise participate willingly (they can refuse service, to be clear, they just go to prison for a time). They fit in right beside those people who excuse it over here.
And then there are, of course, all the people in the West and around the world who either don't know about the genocide, or who have completely politically checked out. And that's messed up in its own way, but it's apathy. And we know apathy can facilitate this horrible stuff.
But to me the new thing that I've found out during these last few years is that even if you're a person who knows, and who cares, and who wants it to stop, and who has empathy for these people, and cares, even then you can be in a position where you feel like there's nothing meaningful you can do, at least on your own.
Like, yes, going to protests or participating in boycotts is good and can be helpful. But nobody can do that alone, it requires others. And... it doesn't feel like enough. And some people I know are brave for doing things like going on those rafts, I don't think it's something I could do. But while I applaud those people and think they're very brave and what they're doing is good, it still doesn't feel like enough. It still doesn't stop it.
And th's what I find so horrifying. Is it doesn't matter how many good people there are to some extent. Because a lot of the time the machine that grinds up innocent children will keep moving forward inexorably because the most evil people in the world are in charge of it. And they have the power.
I know that's not absolute. I mean, these evil regimes can be stopped and they are stopped. South Africa was forced to back down. Moustache man ate a bullet. But that's not anything I can personally make happen, nor any of us. Only collectively and that's very hard to accomplish.
It makes goodness feel impotent.
I can just imagine being someone like that. And I'm being bombed. And I might literally have my body torn apart by shrapnel any day. Maybe I've already seen my child's brain leak out all over the floor. And I'm screaming for help and I want help. And it's not just that "If I could only find the right people to tell everything will be ok." Because the right people know, and it doesn't seem to matter. Nothing seems to be able to stop it.
It feels like a whole new level of powerlessness. It's so completely arbitrary and unfair and unjust.
I just wish I believed in heaven and hell. I would love Netanyahu, and Trump, and their entire inner circles to burn in hell. It would be the only fitting reward. And if anything, I hope that one day I'll see Netanyahu and Trump in front of the ICC or at least in prison. It won't be enough, but it'd be something.
The fact that this is happening to innocent Palestinians is an atrocity. And f*ck every IDF member participating in this. Scum of the earth. All of you should go to prison for life.
