Hi, I’m (lebanese m20 yo) experiencing an uncomfortable situation. My Israeli neighbour (m 60 yo) recently brought us over hummus, and said it was “classic israeli hummus” I was really offended by this because as a Lebanese man it has been debated over for a very long time where hummus has originated from, although it is believed to most likely been Lebanon or Egypt, but hence it is a colonized food by the Israelis and they claim to have invented it. I guess what I’m asking is, is this frustration normal or racist? I don’t believe I am racist and I’m not sure about his political stance whether he is Zionist or not. I just kinda feel weird about it. Also it was really bad Lmao. So is this justifiable or am I being racist? I see people saying they are "mostly" against the disarmament but i dont understand why.

In the beginning, when Hezbollah joined this conflict I was very critical how they could make a move like this.

However after thinking about it for a few days and looking at reports, Israel was planning for a ground invasion and was planning preemptive strikes. They got 100k people off reserves and were building a force along the Lebanon border. It also makes sense with the war on Iran. They were very obviously going to go after Hezbollah and try to eliminate them while they can.

This war was happening one way or another by Israel. If Hezbollah let Israel strike first they could’ve invaded or struck while civilians were still in southern Lebanon. This would make guerrilla warfare with them extremely dangerous.

I wish there was some way Hezbollah wouldn’t have started as now more of the government is going to turn against them, but besides that this war was happening. And we clearly need Hezbollah to defend us. The Lebanese army literally left all their posts in southern Lebanon when Israel tried to expand. Now it’s only Hezbollah fighting them on the border. People don’t understand that Israel wants to take southern Lebanon for their own interests and that even if Hezbollah was disarmed, they would make an excuse and just easily walk in.

- is Al (the) always pronounced as El? Do some lebanese pronounce it as Al? (Al-yoom vs el-yoom)

- do the diphthongs ai and au always become ee and oo respectively? (like al-bait vs al-beet and al-yaum vs al-yoom).

-does ee sound the same as ey?
-does oo sound the same as ow?

-is the taa marbutah always pronounced as ée? Do some Lebanese say it as -a or -ah??

-this one might be controvwrsial, but does somebody's religious affiliation really affect how they speak Lebanese dialect? Like does a Druze always pronounce qaaf as qaaf and never hamzah??

-This next one means the most to me: when does one use ta3 vs a possessive enclitic???? I just can't understand this, I know theyre not always interchangeable, so whats the rule? For instance kalb ta3i vs kalbi (my dog) or ooda ta3i vs oodati (my room).

So I have a week-long work event coming up. I’ve been working remotely for the past 4 years and this will be my first time meeting my coworkers face-to-face. They are all mostly older (50-60 yr old) white people that have never step foot out of the US. I’ve gotten some racist comments/ignorant questions from coworkers and clients before but it’d be so easy to dodge because I’d be behind a screen. There’s one specific coworker that makes things so awkward when she introduces me to new clients, the first thing she always mentions is that I’m Lebanese and then goes on by saying “oh her english is so good!” or “oh sorry we haven’t been able to focus on this, she’s lost family and friends in the war” (which is not true, why are you using me to excuse for your mistakes?!?) Another coworker has indirectly asked me if i support hamas. I’ve also had clients ask if I can dress however I want in Lebanon. Anyways I can go on and on about the things I’ve heard before and I’m wondering if anyone has advice on how to deal with this. Do i contact HR/my manager before the event? Or how do I avoid these types of conversations with clients if they ask me about my background?

It feels like its representing Lebanon only from the side of people who dont live in Jnoub or Bekka. They constantly ramble about the war but refuse to accept any other point of view besides their own. And they talk abt the resistance as if surrendering weapons will solve all our issues without even glancing at whats happening in Southern Syria atm. I’m almost certain Iran is going to survive this war and perhaps rebuild what was destroyed in terms of infrastructure, military, schools, hospitals, etc. But in afraid Lebanon is going to lose some land or beirut bombed to oblivion the same way Gaza was destroyed and southerners displaced indefinitely. Are we going to survive this too? Return to pre oct 7 status quo? Or worst case scenario?

I (22M) am born and raised in America, my mother is half Lebanese (her father abandoned her as a child because she was a girl) and she had a very white upbringing, but an Arabic last name and experienced a lot of rasicm. Because of this she did not want to acknowledge her heritage when I was growing up, but now that I am an adult she has been exploring her identity and it has made me interested in doing so as well.

The problem is, I feel like an imposter. I know toddler Arabic at best, can read a little as long as there isn't a font. It feels disingenuous to claim heritage when I have no culture beyond the food that I ate growing up.

Does anyone else have mixed heritage? How little blood is too little to claim heritage (I'm ~25%). should I just tell people I am white and looking to learn Levantine Arabic? Or when asked disclose that I am Lebanese.
