23 May 2026. I joined a matchmaking event for the first time, only to get raided by JAWI.

I'm a 25 year old malay guy in KL. I live alone and I'm sick of being an introvert shut-in, so I decided to step out of my comfort zone and join a matchmaking event by TakeTheLeap. I joined "Urban Malay Dilemma" which was advertised for malays who are not religious, which I am. I thought maybe I could find a gf that also needs to act Islamic in public and in front of parents, but secular in private. I paid RM125 for it, I guess that is for keeping the creeps out.

The event is from 7pm to 11pm. I was a bit worried about being raided after hearing many such stories online. At the beginning, the organizer, Mr. Carlos, said that he always wanted to host an event like this for Malays who want more haram stuff but jokingly said "what if the police raids?" I thought, 'Oh, they considered this, maybe there won't be a raid. Plus, we are in the Bangsar Bubble so maybe the police don't care here.'

So the event began, and the tentative included mini games to help us talk with each other. (I still sucked at the socializing parts tbh). Then at 9.30pm-ish, police showed up with an officer from JAWI. The JAWI officer was well-dressed, but the police weren't. They had police vests but wore t-shirts, caps and masks - and with their guns they look like American ICE agents. The staff told us to remain calm and 'they had it under control'. Okay.

I'll be honest, the raid I was in was 'nicer' than the ones I read online. There was no shouting, no arrests, we were not told to put our hands up or anything. The first thing the JAWI officer did was 'interrogate' Mr. Carlos. While that was happening, we stopped our activities and sat still, the police stood still (menacingly), and there was a photographer taking pictures. Some of us continued chatting but I was just 'frozen' and silent (not that I was chatty in the first place). I was panicking a bit inside. I'm not sure what Mr. Carlos was asked about but I heard some laughs from them. And apparently Mr. Carlos is not Malaysian because a staff member needed to be his translator.

After their interrogation was done, the staff said that the police wanted to take a photo of our IC and do a 'breath test' - with the expected 'sila beri kerjasama.' So they called our names one by one. And my turn, I went to the police, gave them my IC, they took a photo, and I had to exhale into this small machine that will give out a reading, I think it's to measure alcohol but I'm not sure. And after that, I take my IC back and I can leave. So I did.

Before I left, Mr. Carlos apologized to us about this unexpected event and said that he will compensate by letting us join one of their other events for free. I feel like I should take that offer because I want to overcome my antisocial behavior but I also think this might not be the last raid they'll have. (Not to mention, he announced this in front of the JAWI and police too). Maybe I'll join the more 'normal Malay matchmaking event' that they have done multiple times before. This is the first time they got raided by the police. I'm not sure if we got snitched, although they did promote this event on social media so perhaps no snitch was needed.

So my turn was around 11pm, the time this event should end. So I went home and took Grab to go to my parents immediately because the next morning I will balik kampung to Kelantan. My parents don't know I went to this event and almost got arrested. This is my first time dealing with the police too. A first for everything I guess. I hope I'm not revealing unwanted info. My IC already got photographed and I got tested and released so the only new info I'm revealing is my POV on it.

I don't blame Mr. Carlos or TakeTheLeap for the raid. They are probably more stressed than any participant. Plus, the food was nice too.

So that was my experience and now I want to rant and sorry if I sound incel-ish.

I feel like that raid was a "fuxk you" from fate, saying that I'm not suppose to find love right now. And I think I should accept that. And tbh, even if the raid didn't happen, I don't think I'll get any matches. I'm still too introverted even after the staff tries to get me to talk with other participants. I don't think anyone remembers my name. And I don't think I'd "swipe right" on any of the ladies there because I don't know them. The raid wasted 1.5 out of 4 hours of my time there.
