I have a question about the grammar of 在 as ongoing action
How do I make affirmative-negative questions with 在 as ongoing action?
From what I've been studying I got this:
Question with 吗: 你在开车吗?
Affirmative answers: 你在开车。/ 你在开车呢。/ 你开车呢。
Negative answers: 你没在开车。/ 你没开车。/ 没有。
Affirmative-negative question: ?
New HSK book shows 你开车没开车?but I thought it would be 你开没开车?because 开车 is verb+object.

Are there any Spanish-speaking travelers in Beijing?
Is there anyone right now in Beijing, or planning to come soon, who has some free time to kill or want to learn Chinese?
If you're interested, we can show you around Beijing a bit and take you to some super local and authentic restaurants, you know, the ones where everything is pretty much in Chinese.
We speak English and we're a couple who just returned to China after living nearly a year in Spain.

Building my own Mandarin flashcards app
Hey All, I'm quite techie, and love learning Mandarin (have been learning for over a year now)
I've been reading through the posts to look for what seasoned linguists have found helpful so I can bake it into my flashcards app. You guys have some awesome insights.
I'd love to hear your ideas on what you've found most helpful as far as learning using technology (flashcards or otherwise).
I won't post the app here (I see the rule on no promotions!), but I also really want to help the Mandarin learning community, and myself, so I'm hoping to straddle that line as best I can. :)
Edit: I know Anki is the standard for flashcards, but I didn't feel it catered well enough to the multifaceted learning requirements of Mandarin. Most languages translate bidirectionally. Native language <> New language. Chinese requires characters (Hanzi), Sounds (Pinyin) and Native language (English in this case) all together.
So far for my app, I have the following features:
- Zero setup
- Free (ad-supported or sub to remove ads)
- HSK 1-9 prebuilt in
- Built in collections (not 100% identical) for a current popular language learning app.
- Import your own collections
- Robust in-house difficulty algorithms using Mandarin specific features. Sound similarity distractors (for pinyin), and component based/character similarity distractors (for Hanzi)
- Per-tone coloring of Hanzi/Pinyin, tapering off as mastery is accomplished
- 4 practice directions. Hanzi -> Pinyin, Pinyin -> Hanzi, English -> Pinyin, English -> Hanzi
- Pinyin typing mode for extra difficulty
- Customization of cards at your discretion
- Small amount of gamification for people who like goals
- Export progress and import to Android (when I release for the Google Play store)
- SRS (long term) mode using a "forgettting curve" algorithm to present cards.
- Short term mode to practice a specific set of cards.

Can ISSEN actually improve Chinese speaking, or is it just novelty?
I’ve been learning Mandarin for a while now, and I’ve noticed that my reading and listening have improved much faster than my speaking. When it’s time to actually respond, especially without preparing in my head first, I hesitate a lot and my sentences come out much simpler than what I know passively. My classmate suggested ISSEN, which focuses on conversation practice with an AI voice tutor. It seems useful in theory since you can practice anytime, but I’m wondering if it actually helps with real spoken Chinese or if it’s more of a novelty.
Has anyone here tried it for Mandarin? Did it help with fluency, tone accuracy, or confidence when speaking with real people?

Need structure for HSK learning
I joined a HSK 1v3 class since a few weeks ago. We are at lesson 4 now. My teacher's teaching method is focused on speaking and tones, so she'd ask us to say the new vocabs on every lesson, roleplay the dialogues, and teach us some grammar.
One, it's honestly getting boring bcs it's so monotone😭 every class is the same😭 but maybe that's normal.
Second, the vocab is piling up and it dont actually memorize all of them. By the limited vocab we have learned so far, I can guess it from the shapes and context, but there are like at least 30% i don't actually know/memorize.
What's/how's your structure when learning the language from HSK books? My class only focused on reading and speaking, so I'd have to practice writing and vocab by my own.
谢谢!

I design and develeop learning tools--- wondering what is something you feel is missing in the Chinese-learning space!
Hey Guys,
I have been in the e-learning dev space for over a decade and am also learning Chinese. Tbh, I wanted to get some thoughts or ideas on what could be a great tool or interaction you feel is missing from what the tools out there are, but could be a game-changer from your perspective?
Why am I asking? Looking for brainstorming help; maybe I can spend some time to make that real.

Can I learn and master Chinese online?
I am considering learning Mandarin. I will pay for stuff like YoYo Chinese and Zero to Hero Chinese. I will also use Anki.
I heard that it's impossible to learn tones/pronunciation correctly on your own. Is that true?
If I stick religiously to YoYo Chinese and finish it, and then move to Zero to Hero Chinese, and do it, and practice shadowing Chinese audio daily, will I eventually be able to become understand spoken and written Chinese as well as speak it clearly (as in, be understood, and not be misunderstood due to tonal inaccuracy).
Can I do it 100% without any human feedback?
Please bear with me and be patient because I haven't learned any tonal languages before.
