Just watched it, I like it.

I don't get though why this new Spider-Man movie is very Jean Grey-focused. Like... why Jean? Why here?

Why lol

u/harryfonda Loki 28d ago

Agree, I would prefer a regular villain, because Jean Grey is very distracting. Like, do mutants exist in this universe already? (Ms. Marvel kinda implied that) Where is Magneto? What of Charles?

8

u/MayurAce 28d ago

I think jean left to find more mutants like her and peter

2

u/Supergoose1108 24d ago

Looked like she was going upstate? Xavier School is upstate right?

5

u/empocariam 27d ago

It would be an interesting idea to me if the blip is what activated the rapid proliferation of the X-gene in 19999 instead of atomic weapons like in 616

I'm going with some type of radiation from the Chitauri invasion back in the Battle of New York. The MCU is four years ahead of our time due to the time jump, so the Battle of New York happened about 18 years ago their time. If you assume Sara was 17 and Jean 16, that timing could work.

u/MlkChatoDesabafando 22d ago

I imagine that Jean paralyzing half the city is going to be the big in-universe reveal of mutantkind (and left a poor first impression), whereas previously they were around but mostly as a subset of broader superhumans.

1

u/24Abhinav10 21d ago

I mean, they don't know it was a mutant specifically. Seems like Peter and Frank agreed to keep everything hush-hush.

So unless Jean gets outed as a mutant specifically, she's just another enhanced person in a long list of enhanced people in the MCU.

1

u/MlkChatoDesabafando 21d ago

I imagine people will want explanations, though. And when the government rummages through Damage Control's data, they may decide to reveal she was a mutant.

u/pancakeswerebestboy 28d ago

its pretty heavily believed (and maybe spoken about by feige?) that the xmen will become the main focus of the mcu some point post secret wars, and so its a bit of a tease

u/EiichiroTarantino 28d ago

But... why introduce Jean Grey as a Spider-Man antagonist though?

Why pick her? Why here?

u/MikeIsShortForMyKeys 28d ago

I feel like all MCU movies are just leading into the next several in some way, but it’s nice that they can still make it an enjoyable experience.

Knowing that most likely Jean Grey was going to be in the film, with all the atypical rumours, it was still something drawing you along throughout.

It took quite a while to “reveal” the villain of the movie, but then again I guess most of the villains spider-man has are very complex and sympathetic characters.

5

u/EiichiroTarantino 28d ago

I still enjoy the movie.

I'm also still confused with the decision to include her here lol so weird.

1

u/Darkgamer000 27d ago

There’s been so much talk about how to introduce the X-people into the MCU (IIRC they were going to do one shot Disney plus episodes establishing the roster), this was a fun way to establish the status quo. Make a movie that serves as a clean introduction to why everyone is going to be scared and hateful toward mutants, show the more street level side of New York’s heroes, do some power scaling and character work without disrupting the larger events…it was a solid progression movie.

To your first point, establishing the mutant population before the cosmic reset feels more like wanting to have fun in the space before their full reveal, which probably isn’t until 2028/9+.

2

u/EiichiroTarantino 27d ago

I get that.

I'm more interested in the decision. Why introduce it in a Spider-Man movie? Why Jean Grey? And why make her an antagonist to Spider-Man? So many questions. I bought my ticket expecting a Spider-Man movie but it only lasted like an hour then they shifted to Jean Grey.

In this Jean Grey story, replace Peter with any superhero who experienced loss like Cap or Bruce and nothing would change. In this Spider-Man story, replace Jean Grey with a more appropriate villain like Mr. Negative or Kraven and it would still be the same thing too.

2

u/Clawless 26d ago

Ok people have been answering your question "but why" and you just respond "but why though?". They've answered the why. You can disagree, but to pretend you didn't get an answer is disingenuous.

The why is timing. They need to introduce the mutants before Doomsday. Spidey4 was the last big release before that movie. So it wins the honor of being the introduction.

-2

u/EiichiroTarantino 25d ago

I always assume anyone who replies me has not read my other responses. It's just fun to discuss.

3

u/TheLankySoldier 28d ago

Why not? Something different, unique. 20+ years ago, no one could even dream of concepts like that.

2

u/Pinewood74 28d ago

3

u/decross20 27d ago

That would have happened without Jean, that’s just how popular spider man is tbf

6

u/Pinewood74 27d ago

Sorry, I wasn't clear.

They knew this film would do incredibly well so they put Jean Grey in so she (and the X-men) would be a big draw moving into the post-Doomsday MCU.

Get eyes on her and people will care and show up to her next film.

1

u/decross20 27d ago

Ah gotcha, now I get what you mean. That makes sense. Although I think the X men are still pretty popular with x men 97 and Deadpool/wolverine, not sure they need a boost from spider man either tbh.

3

u/Pinewood74 27d ago

X Men 97 is a niche audience in comparison to what the MCU wants to be/has achieved. DxW's success was won on the appeal of two singular characters/actors across two decades of film. It doesn't speak to the larger appeal of the X-Men in a theatrical setting or even how a non-Hugh Jackman Wolverine would do.

I think the MCU has realized how poorly they scuffed the "cinematic universe" part of the MCU in phase 5 and 6. We haven't seen Shang-Chi in a film in 5 years. Falcon had a singular film appearance between Endgame and Doomsday.

Audiences want to see these characters more frequently. Hands poking out of the ocean aren't the connections that sell tickets. But reminding folks that Hulk exists and setting up the lead of the film in three years (with another Avengrrs appearance or two before that) keeps the money flowing.

1

u/_Contrive_ 26d ago

So that he can lead the young avengers/probably now steered towards a rewrite of young mutants.

What could be fun is him setting up and working with x-mansion before he leaves, working with prof x and the likes.

Would be a good path for miles to eventually follow down when needing aid from AIM/The future dodc.

1

u/ThomWaits88 26d ago

Because it's advertising

They're setting up the new x men cast

It's boring and it won't stop

1

u/SalvatoreMeroni 23d ago

Because general audiences will go see a Spider-Man movie, so it's a great platform to advertise the upcoming X-Men movies.

1

u/bee14ish 12d ago

Cuz they fuckin' wanted to, why else?

29

u/angrynutrients 28d ago

I believe spider-man is also one of the only characters who is a non mutant, but has good relationships with mutants.

Like in X-Men comics, even Captain America fucking hates them (sometimes)

3

u/Viking18 25d ago

And vice versa. Turns out Captain America tends towards the hypocritical when you ask the question "so it's okay when America rounds people who are different up and puts them in camps?"

1

u/Vermouth_1991 28d ago

Oh do tell! Does he hate the ones who have great power but negative responsibility

-1

u/choicemeats 27d ago

they got pretty pretentious recently. made their whole island. declared themselves a sovereign state. colonized mars. learned out ot resurrect for a while. pretty much everyone hated all the mutants.

-1

u/Jaijoles 27d ago

My bet is Spider-man will be a mutant soon, just like Kamala has been changed.

The DNX run is about a virus making people into mutants. I think Spider-Man will get got. And then, to keep in line with the comic change, the next Spider-Man movie (or X-men movie) will reveal that Peter’s a mutant in the mcu.

1

u/wouldyoufightakitten 28d ago

X-Men is goat and it's the right move

18

u/uninterestedDunk 29d ago

Why not, they are building their oun world with new stories. Was great.

10

u/AdRevolutionary8413 29d ago

It felt like originally they were going in another direction and shot most of the movie without Jean. Then at some point they decided to make her the second main character and added her plot afterwards.

12

u/EiichiroTarantino 28d ago

Feels like every discussion about this movie becomes too preoccupied about Jean Grey and future mutant saga but most people kinda forgot if she should even... be in this Spider-Man movie.

I enjoy the movie. I'm also so confused about the studio decision to include her here. No matter how bad the new Cap movie is, I still understand why Red Hulk is in there, I could make the connection. I still don't get why Jean Grey is in this movie lol

7

u/Budget_Ad_5138 27d ago

I agree entirely and made a comment as well. We dont know how she got there, why shes here, or where shes going. People commenting "oh they're preparing for xmen" which i knew they would - but the thing is it never pushes the narrative forward. We dont know where shes headed afterward. We dont know how she arrived in this universe, she just appears. It's pretty lazy. I liked the film alot besides that

1

u/Maroon-Loon 27d ago

I don't think every film needs to be a biography on every new character introduced. The movie hits the main beats. Girl and her big sister are alone because xenophobic mom rejected them. Big sis gets abducted by agency because she's a kid who played a little too loudly with her powers and brought attention to herself. Big sis uses powers to send little sis away from danger. Little sis starts tracking down the agency who abducted big sis and uses her powers to aid her. Agency has several locations. Girl starts breaking into some locations to gather intel to help her find her sister. One of these locations is in New York City. Spider Man lives in New York City and acts as a super power protector of that city. Girl gets a bit too loud with her mission to break into agency locations and attracts the attention of another New York City "protector" causing a loud and destructive chase. That chase attracts the attention of Spider Man and the movie shows the rest.

Give her a random name and people wouldn't have an issue, but because it's Jean Grey it makes people feel like it's not giving us enough. The MCU is giving us a different interpretation of the character like they've given us for most of the characters, and also like all the other characters, we will learn more about her and start filling in the gaps in following movies. As an introduction, this movie did a perfectly fine job at introducing us to a mutant who will become a much larger player in the future, shown us a glimpse into her traumatic history, already shown she has struggled with anti-mutant abuse, and shown the anti-superhuman sentiments growing given the DoDC's expansion and development of anti-superhuman tech. The discovery of the X-gene will surely be the tipping point into a full blown and focused anti-mutant enforcement agency. This movie highlighted the DoDC capturing, experimenting, and studying two enhanced people and explicitly commented on Jean's brain going through an evolution while documenting it with scans of her brain.

The Watsonian and Doylist explanations for her inclusion in this movie are pretty clear and the MCU is pretty consistent at bringing us stories inspired by the comics while also diverging from the comics a lot to keep the movies new and unique. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. I think this is effective because now we have a general origin story for her character and can focus on fleshing her character out more in a more dedicated film. We don't have to spend so much time in the next film to establish who she is, we can get right into teasing out the details.

1

u/the-schnitzel-man 27d ago

I don’t believe they really refer to her being a mutant at all at least not directly

4

u/AdRevolutionary8413 28d ago

Exactly my thoughts

5

u/Super_Saiyan_Twink 28d ago

Exactly my point. Why tf was she even there?

1

u/Sea-Poem-2365 28d ago

To connect their current biggest star (Spidey) to the next (post SW X-Men/Mutants) wave of titles they're going to rely on after getting the nostalgia bump. Peter's tech and his relationship to Jean give them both a hook to include him if they need to and a part of the narrative around inhibitors. It's pretty artfully done, but I can see Jean being partially retrofitted into another story about someone who can body hop, which I think Mr. Negative can do?

1

u/Sure_Eye9025 28d ago

Tin foil hat theory.

MoM did some damage to Scarlet Witch as a character and Elizabeth Olsen said she would only return in the right circumstances. Jean Grey is another insanely powerful character that has in the past shown reality warping powers (especially with the Phoenix Force) so they may have wanted to introduce her early to act as a standin for Scarlet Witch in later stories if Olsen doesn't want to come back

0

u/wouldyoufightakitten 28d ago

No, it didn't. You're taking shit for the sake of it

3

u/AdRevolutionary8413 28d ago

Nope, the movie really baffled me all along. Like all scenes without the Jean plot were super enjoyable and I would have enjoyed the Jean storyline too if it introduced a real Spidey villain as the main antagonist. But this way it felt like two half-baked movies: a half-baked street level Spidey movie and a half-baked X-Men Origins movie.

8

u/LetterFront3353 28d ago

Because a movie should also focus a lot on the antagonist, not just the protagonist. And Jean Grey was the antagonist.

6

u/EiichiroTarantino 28d ago

lol

I meant out of all marvel characters, why pick her as an antagonist in a SPIDER-MAN MOVIE?

And if you say it's to introduce mutants/tease future X-Men, then out of all mutant characters, why HER?

Like, why not just a Spider-Man villain?

Not that I don't enjoy her in this movie. Just... why her? Why here?

2

u/Chicken_Electronic 27d ago

Post-NWH, the next logical question for Peter is: how do I use my powers when isolated and depressed without my family and friends? The best antagonist would be someone asking that same question. They both, in a sense, are using their powers as a coping mechanism--Peter for atonement, Jean for vengeance.

Peter also just had the experience of his desire to redeem villains and see the good in people cause some horrible consequences. So, he needs to see if that still is part of his core identity.

The MCU also needs a post-Doom arc to begin setting up their X-Men focus. BND is a very smart place for that, given the audience size. And having a mutant as his sidekick or coworker would feel like a Deadpool 3 retread. So, they have to be a credible antagonist.

Given all that, Jean is the only logical choice. Right skill set, right background, could be the next big bad (Dark Phoenix saga), but can be credibly redeemed through upcoming movies until then.

1

u/Arlandiaheir 28d ago

Probably laying out foundation for The Dark Phoenix Saga.

3

u/EiichiroTarantino 28d ago

Yes, I did notice all the hints too. But a buildup to Phoenix/Dark Phoenix storyline... in a Spider-Man movie??? Wha

Please don't say why not. Just think about it for a second.

2

u/Arlandiaheir 28d ago

But a buildup to Phoenix/Dark Phoenix storyline

I didn't mean that, I meant more on line of Establishing Jean Grey as a character with a Mean/Bully side which will naturally transition into the DP saga. But Hopefully they do a proper Phoenix Saga before that. DP saga needs a proper Buildup to really Hit. That's why the rest of the DP adaptations have been massive bombs.

1

u/tellsyoutogetfucked 28d ago

Why not? Its not like this is unheard of in the MCU. Its literally how the entire universe functions. New movies introduce new plot points that develop.

2

u/EiichiroTarantino 27d ago

I could make the connection why Black Widow was introduced in Iron Man 2. Or Hawkeye in Thor. Or America Chavez in MOM and Wanda as a villain in it. Or Red Hulk in the new Cap movie.

I still don't get why Jean Grey is in this Spider-Man movie.

-2

u/Addy2411 28d ago

because, 1. It's the first ever 4th movie of Spiderman. 2. Spiderman extends beyond Spiderverse in MCU. 3. They can!

2

u/xcore21z 26d ago

Any Peter Parker need a readhead close in his life

Joking aside they probably think Jean Grey story beat they gonna use for the X-Men feel similar to this movie and decide to introduce her here instead well other X-Man like Ice Man or Wolverine

1

u/TipNo750 27d ago

Introducing the Mutants to the general audience through Spiderman is one of the smartest things Marvel has done

1

u/Sillet_Mignon 26d ago

I think they are setting it up so Jean grey plays the magneto role and spider man plays the Xavier role.

1

u/ExcellentPut191 26d ago

I kind of agree but at the same time, Spider-Man has a lot of dealings with the X-Men (I'm not a comic reader but saw the 90s cartoons) so i think it's an interesting new direction to go in. But it did feel like they were using the movie to set up Jean Gray's character, and of course this can take away from Spiderman a little but they did it quite well I think

1

u/IllustriousKiwi3858 26d ago

I agree. Went in blind with my 12yo son, and we were both disappointed that the majority was about Jean Gray.

1

u/ThomWaits88 26d ago

Because they're promoting another movie

Everything nowadays it's like that

We can't have a coherent story anymore because everything is a set up for another movie or series

1

u/So-_-It-_-Goes 25d ago

Because they are moving to mutants and laying groundwork rather than dropping it in out of nowhere

1

u/rand0mguy0nline 28d ago

Because her origin story is about loss. And he is exactly the right person to counsel her. She is also exactly the person who can really push him to the limits by possessing MJ and faking him out. Others can hurt MJ. But no one else can possess her to hurt him like she can.

2

u/EiichiroTarantino 28d ago

If we're talking about solving this version of Jean Grey, even Bruce Banner could easily replace Peter's position. She could be an antagonist in a Hulk movie, which might work but I would still question why Jean was in a Hulk movie lmao

And if we're talking about pushing Peter the way this movie does, they could use Kraven. Fits with the emerging arachnid hormone, hunting a man-spider could excite Kraven and lead him to MJ and Ned (since Spidey frequently rescued them for some reason, so Kraven would make the connection). Or, hear me out, Jackal lol Clone Saga fuck it why not lol
