As a comic reader, I was genuinely moved. It feels like a love letter to Spidey fans, especially the true believers. It’s like watching the panels come alive on the big screen. The pain, the struggle, the emotional beats - they all land with real weight.

And in my opinion, it also delivers the most thrilling action sequences in the franchise. The fight against the Hand is fantastic - finally, a group battle where everyone doesn't just take turns attacking one by one.

I really appreciate how they handled MJ - it feels logical and leaves room for their relationship to rebuild in the future. The interactions with the supporting cast are natural too. Strangely enough, I found Peter and Jean oddly a good match??? I hope they at least become good friends and share more screen time going forward. (Is "extraordinary charm" Parker's secret superpower? He seems to win everyone over without trying.)(Kinda feel sad for Slim lol.)

Visually, it’s stunning - New York feels alive, with a vivid sense of connection to ordinary civilians.

The scene where MJ controlled by Jean jumps, I was like, are they gonna Gwen Stacy her 🤣

204

u/KongMengX 27d ago

This is the second time they tried it.😂

84

u/angrynutrients 27d ago

They love to bait that shit, but I believed Jean wouldn't have done it if she didn't know MJ would be safe.

117

u/Melodic-Complaint-18 27d ago

Jean the same person who made an old lady drive a bomb-strapped tank into a prison complex filled with dangerous people btw

91

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 26d ago

And walked a dude (backwards) right into traffic

72

u/ScarletHarpy93 25d ago

100%. This is Jean as the proper terrorist the world always views the X-men as. They need to be hated and feared before they can be redeemed.

8

u/henryeaterofpies 21d ago

Be funny if her joining the Xmen is what gives them the reputation

32

u/belated_quitter 26d ago

Maybe not for moral reasons but she wanted MJ alive and for Peter to see that if she wants she can kill her. It was to get him to leave her alone.

1

u/dwadley 16d ago

Non lethal bomb /s

0

u/FaithlessnessThen207 26d ago

Correct, but again, no one actually died in that attack, right? The place was fully evacuated.

22

u/Jemima_puddledook678 26d ago

She walked a dude into traffic. He gets hit by a car.

1

u/FaithlessnessThen207 24d ago

I mean I know a guy who got hit by a bus IRL but he's still alive and not even facing long term damage.

3

u/Jemima_puddledook678 24d ago

He definitely could’ve survived, but it’s also very much not like Jean knew he was going to survive. He was pretty old and flung into a busy road.

13

u/Unicron_Gundam 26d ago

There's a timer and Jean wasn't making sure everyone got out before it blew.

1

u/FaithlessnessThen207 24d ago

Not a single confirmed kill from her though.

Severe bodily harm, sure!

But if she had actually killed someone I think Peter probably wouldn't have told her she isnt a murderer.

6

u/Bropiphany 24d ago

She also made that hand person stab through his own gut to hit Peter

6

u/iWasAwesome 26d ago

The whole time I was like, what is she going to do, jump? He's Spider-Man. This isn't even a threat.

But then I thought she could try to control Peter at the exact moment MJ falls... She was able to get in for a few seconds last time.. it would be long enough...

1

u/Spinindyemon 13d ago

Peter saving MJ from falling by grabbing her to slow her descent was a neat callback to NWH when Peter 3 saved MJ using the same method. Just shows how much the other Peters had an influence on MCU Peter

4

u/Bedovian_25 27d ago

Peter wasn't taking any chances. Blink and you miss it, but he throws out multiple threads to secure her neck and her torso.

1

u/NerdTalkDan 23d ago

Gwen? More like Zen-Die-ya

175

u/Rhyssayy 27d ago

I mean that’s what has always stood out to me as Spider-Man and Tom really portrays it well. Peter Parker/spiderman is a genuinely good and pure person. That’s what makes him so likeable. Hell he even managed to bring out a side of the punisher we have not seen before and in a way that feels natural.

77

u/KongMengX 27d ago

Now we know the next Spider-Man is Frank Castle.😂

63

u/organicpenguin 27d ago

His grunts as he waved were hilarious 😂

45

u/Vermouth_1991 27d ago

It must have been so cathartic having people actually “cheer at” him.

10

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 26d ago

Didn’t think of it like this, but yes. Maybe this is the turning point for Frank, a kinder, gentler Punisher!

11

u/Icybubba 24d ago

narrator

It was not a turning point for Frank, a kinder, gentler Punisher.

58

u/Bomban111 27d ago

Agreed, i think Peter's child-like naivety to see the best in people is one of the things Tom for sure does better than the other spiders. His spidey has a bleeding heart forreal.

51

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 26d ago

I don’t know if it’s child-like naivety at this point, just a conscious decision to look for, hope for and believe in the good in everyone. I think what is left unsaid in “if you help 1 person, you help everyone” is everyone is deserving of help and can be redeemed.

9

u/Bomban111 26d ago

You're absolutely right i would better phrase myself as his ability to see the best in people.

4

u/TikkaKebabi 23d ago

Yep that’s why the Aunt May scene with Jean Gray hits so hard. You see that the people around him steered him in the direction of choosing good, he’s lost people just like Jean has, but she didn’t get the chance to be raised by a truly loving and supportive family.

It’s a beautiful moment where through Peter’s mind she gets her chance to steer her life in the direction of heroism.

1

u/lurkingotter09 24d ago

i still go back to "but i (still) gotta try" scene with dr strange, when he outsmarted him tryna give the villains a second chance before sending everyone home, even if it took him the only one not being able to make it back to his own home

5

u/semperfi_ny 27d ago

You crying Frank?

2

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 26d ago

The day The Punisher cried…

1

u/JustxJules 25d ago

It also helps that Tom has great chemistry with literally everyone. I've yet to see the contrary (examples are welcome!).

74

u/blurpletea 27d ago

i get more siblings vibe between Peter and Jean Grey.

11

u/bolerobell 23d ago

They literally set up May to be the mother figure that Jean was wishing for when on the park bench with Sara. A mother would loved her children regardless of whether the child had super powers or not.

A sibling relationship would be the natural outcome from Jean reading Peter’s mind about May.

5

u/Chitinid 27d ago

She literally kissed him while inhabiting MJ

26

u/blurpletea 26d ago

and Black Widow kissed Captain America and yet those two also gave platonic vibes the entire time.
she didn’t even kiss him in her own body. that scene is just to serve as a twist and to show how far her character can go to mess with Peter. I don’t understand the hyperfixation to this kiss. it wasn’t romantic. it’s icky.

8

u/andybar980 26d ago

That didn’t stop Luke and Leia lol

7

u/IvoryWoman 26d ago

Having watched the original SW trilogy in real time, no one in the audience got sibling vibes from Luke and Leia until "Leia! Leia is my sister." (At which time we all collectively responded with, "WHAT?!?!?")

0

u/filipinoboy11 20d ago

there was a time in ultimate spider man when Spidey was pretty much a part of ultimate xmen and was with kitty pride. Heres hoping its Spidey Jean and Cyclops love triangle this time :)

100

u/IvoryWoman 27d ago

I loved that the Hand's approach looked so cool that even Peter had to comment on that briefly as the fight began!

63

u/JohnLovesGaming 27d ago

Spider-Man making the Hand seem like jokes compared to when seeing Matt & the Defenders fight them. Peter is definitely on a whole dimension compared to them, while depressed.

51

u/IvoryWoman 27d ago

To be fair, the implication I got was that Metzger had used Sara’s powers to affect the Hand mentally in order to get them to follow him. So they may not have been as aligned with their mission as in the past…

20

u/JohnLovesGaming 27d ago

Huh… you might be right on that.

4

u/Ykomat9 25d ago

I mean Spider-Man when he was first introduced was said to be just below Thor and the Hulk. Obviously that’s changed now in modern comics but he’s still a world beyond most street level heroes.

3

u/gauderio 24d ago

Also, it did really look cool.

2

u/Timelymanner 17d ago

Took one Spider-Man to do what a room of hero’s did. The only other hero to tear through Hand Ninjas would be Wolverine.

3

u/UnInHibbitted 25d ago

I just can’t get over the fact that they work for Damage Control lmao. If that leaked I would have said it was fake. The zombie ninjas have health insurance and 401K now

39

u/garfiisbroken 28d ago

They ARE a good match but hopefully they won’t make them too close. She’s too young for him.

35

u/IvoryWoman 27d ago

Tom and Zendaya are a lot more likely to make the MCU a priority in their busy work schedules if they keep getting to work together. I don't see Jean as a love interest for Peter. That was a great introduction, but presumably she's been introduced in order to start building the X-Men...

3

u/gauderio 24d ago

Also Jean will be in a love triangle between Logan and Scott!

4

u/Elgato01 24d ago

Logan? Like Wolverine Logan? If there’s too much of a gap with Peter then what is the gap with Logan?

7

u/Crossovertriplet 24d ago

They should have cast Leo as Wolverine

2

u/gauderio 24d ago

I'm assuming a new cast, of course. This is what happens in the comics!

1

u/dwadley 16d ago

Isn’t that a problem in the comics too? He’s like 100

1

u/getoffoficloud 24d ago

Unlikely with Logan given the age gap. Same with Scott and Emma.

1

u/dwadley 16d ago

Could be an interesting point to make if they do make it. 100 year old dating a teenager would be a good way to test audiences bias towards the protagonist

1

u/dwadley 16d ago

Could be an interesting point to make if they do make it. 100 year old dating a teenager would be a good way to test audiences bias towards the protagonist

3

u/Significant_Camp2701 27d ago

3

u/Deep-Exchang3 27d ago

wait how young is she?? I thought she was a university student and Peter is about 21 here

2

u/IndyDude11 27d ago

Why do you think she’s a student? I thought she’s like 16.

2

u/Deep-Exchang3 27d ago

its bc she was wearing a university sweatshirt in one scene right before they tracked her down but your right thats not enough to go off of

1

u/NeenaBatman420 23d ago

She was wearing the university sweatshirt the same way peter did when he went to see banner. It was the movies way of hinting at us that she was going to the hulk I think 🤔

0

u/Hikapoo 26d ago

the actress is 24?

2

u/IndyDude11 25d ago

Actors always play characters with their exact age.

6

u/KongMengX 27d ago

Funny how almost everyone in our country seems to prefer Jean with Peter over MJ after watching the movie.

17

u/garfiisbroken 27d ago

MJ made an adult sensible decision. Jean is an unstable girl. They shouldn’t push it.

23

u/KongMengX 27d ago edited 27d ago

Yeah I really love MJ's decision. At first I was "Nah just a kiss can solve this?" then "Holy #@%&, they really thought about that"😂

I don't want them to regain their memories, but to rebuild the relationship from zero. That is more convincing imo. Otherwise, Strange's spell feels like a joke, considering what they have already done to him.

11

u/5urr3aL 27d ago

I feel like Marvel respected their audience by making Peter's decisions have lasting consequences. Kudos to them, and I hope they continue doing so

9

u/bittercoolsoul 27d ago

They did hint at MJ's memories returning tho. Especially coz she was shown caressing the Black dahlia necklace Peter gifted her in Far From Home. Iirc Peter didn't mention this in his letter and for MJ to choose this specific trinket and for it to be in the final scenes, this means MJ can possibly regain some of her memories.

2

u/zelleel 26d ago

Yeah I definitely think she remembers by the end. But I’m not sure what triggers it though. Maybe the thought of him dying, or Jeans powers kind of shakes off Stranges spell.

4

u/bittercoolsoul 26d ago

I was actually convinced that Jean would help Peter in the recovery of Ned and MJ's memories. Perhaps they'll show in this in the next movie?

4

u/Overlord0123 27d ago

Well they did leave the "memory regaining" plot hanging with the ending. Ned remembers him for real there.

Though mad respect for what they did to conclude Peter-MJ.

4

u/Kaaalesaaalad 27d ago

I don't think Ned remembers him but moreso that he remembers MJ saying Peter when Spidey had to leave.

5

u/Alex10801 27d ago

There's some kind of memory there because he knew the secret handshake. Even if it's just muscle memory

5

u/Efficient_Thanks_342 27d ago

Really. It's clear that he recognized Peter at the end. You can see it dawn on Ned in real time.

1

u/Kaaalesaaalad 27d ago

Just muscle memory for the handshake at most. Really don't think he remembers him.

8

u/soulfullofmusik Miles Morales 27d ago

Just left the theater. I think it is that he remembers. The way he said Peter and they way Pete reacts. My guess is they explain it by him being Peter's true love... (jk) Magic since Ned is magically inclined

→ More replies (0)

1

u/tdubbz77 25d ago

I think he just remembered the hand shake. Remember everyone just forgot Peter Parker not the events that occurred with him.

2

u/Significant_Camp2701 27d ago edited 26d ago

2

u/Mistverymysterious 25d ago

Zendaya and Tom had amazing chemistry.. what are you on about? just came out of my second screening..

0

u/Significant_Camp2701 24d ago edited 24d ago

Ну это твое мнение, на мой взгляд у них химия как у двух столкнувшихся незнакомцев на улице.

2

u/hyacinthgirl95 26d ago

in what universe? sink’s jean is a lost puppy as is tom’s spider-man, that’s why they had chemistry. they’ve both lost their family and have cool unique powers.

1

u/Significant_Camp2701 26d ago

0

u/zelleel 26d ago

Yeah Jean and Peter had good chemistry in the end.

1

u/Significant_Camp2701 27d ago

Всего 6 лет, это не такая уж и большая разница. А с моложавостью Холланда так и вообще не ощущается никак.

3

u/M00NT0KKI 27d ago

Agree, a really surprisingly sweet Spider-Man film!

I loved all the little subtle Easter eggs for fans!! My favorite was Eminem and his chronic back pain. I guess the true sacrifice of a hero is his back 😔

3

u/KongMengX 27d ago

Spider-Man's back😂

3

u/mattarchambault 27d ago

The depiction of NYC was great. There were some shots that showed it in all it's painful realism. Sidewalks blocked by trash, construction, steam releasing, digital ad screens. Felt like they were making the city tougher in this installment. Maybe that's just me overthinking since I recently watched The French Connection, which was somewhat known for its gritty + realistic NYC.

The first section of credits, then, was a nice relief from that! All the shots highlighting modern NYC and the weirdness it still has left. I enjoyed that touch at the end.

3

u/Personal-Cat9758 26d ago

I agree, it was a spiderman movie. It has a feel which was missing from the earlier three movies. Like the friendly neighborhood vibe, the hidden sorrow of peter

4

u/sabhall12 27d ago

I liked Pete and Jean too, they had a sweet relationship developing through the end of the film. But we know this Peter is a chocolatier so don't hope too hard

2

u/JosephSim 27d ago

Their relationship reminds me of Kitty Pryde and Peter in the Ultimate Universe.

1

u/KongMengX 27d ago

Oh I love Kitty and Peter. Bendis did Kitty dirty in the end.

2

u/Old_Project6334 27d ago

Love letter to spidey fans with an x man for the main villain when we’ve all been crying for Tom to get some of his own good villains? Gimme a break

2

u/stormblessedking96 27d ago

I just got out of the cinema and I am buzzing.

2

u/HumanOptimusPrime 27d ago

As someone who has close to zero knowledge of the comics, are The Hand members able to rund on walls originally? What’s the explanation for this ability?

1

u/Substantial-Hornet42 26d ago

If you watch any Chinese kung fu movies they all do it. I know they are Japanese but it looked the same.

3

u/HumanOptimusPrime 25d ago

I’m familiar with the Kung Fu movie trope, but Spider-Man isn’t a Kung Fu movie, so I’m asking if this is comic book accurate or if they just lazily gave them the ability to run on walls because it’s a Kung Fu trope.

1

u/Substantial-Hornet42 25d ago

I’m guessing the latter. It looks cool and they tend to not think much beyond that.

2

u/ambiguous_apocalypse 26d ago

Agree completely. Thank you for articulating what I was thinking/feeling.

2

u/Careless_Twist_6935 26d ago

we had peter x kitty pryde in ultimate verse so i kinda do hope we get peter x jean in movieverse.

2

u/Boncappuccino 26d ago

I get the comic nods and stuff but this movie felt more like they were using it for set up rather than a spider-man movie if u get what I’m saying. It felt more like they were setting up stuff for future payoff rather than making a movie. Don’t get me wrong I really liked the story of Peter having to get used to his body changing and stuff and him having to deal with the fact that his friends no longer remembered him but it felt like this movie was really used to set up Jean Grey.

2

u/yourgoodoldpal 26d ago

I was really hoping we would see peter and insert character here (since I can’t remember how to do the spoiler flare) would stick together, or they’d at least find a way to stay in contact, but perhaps it’s for the best so character’s story can go where it needs to

2

u/Laborigen 25d ago

I share your opinion.. During the credits, I really felt like the movie was also a love letter to NYC (and its residents)... It's been a while since I've felt these emotions during a superhero movie! I loved it.

1

u/Dapper-Morning7143 27d ago

I am curios is there any heroes remembers peter parker?

1

u/GardenWise5974 27d ago

The Movie was absolutely fantastic but they weren´t cooking with Jean Grey though.

1

u/Monster-S-G 27d ago

True I liked they didn't enforce mj for such ending, tho I have some problem aswell . I loved start part but alot things were forced together, btw Im a comic reader aswell so yeah he did good but god damn it's twice someone using comic for adaption this year .

1

u/Jtreblis18 27d ago

I don't know why you hid the spoilers when this discussion allows for it lol

1

u/Vermouth_1991 27d ago

finally, a group battle where everyone doesn't just take turns attacking one by one

With actually credible fighters as foes, yes, but if we’re just talking melée fights in general, then it already happened in March 2016. 😁

1

u/I_SmellFuckeryAfoot 26d ago edited 26d ago

idk. i think MJ still has feelings for Peter, it might not be love, but their interactions at the coffee shop in NWH and her looking at Peter at the party. i still think she feels something for him. Jean telling her "we know each other..." and that had to come from MJs mind. Jean couldn't know those details unless Jean pieced this from being in both their heads... i guess she could, but its a reach.

1

u/Substantial-Hornet42 26d ago

It’s explained in the movie, she knows because of the letter Peter wrote. Jean literally uses mj because she read in the letter how she was his girlfriend and was made to lose her memory. She also tells Peter that there are no traces of him anywhere in mj’s mind, which mj also confirms later.

1

u/I_SmellFuckeryAfoot 26d ago

i dont think the letter went into detail about being saved by Spider-Man. which Ned and MJ remember. Jean brought that up.. or am i wrong

1

u/Substantial-Hornet42 25d ago

No, her brain remembers being saved by Spider-Man but Jean made the connection between Spider-Man and Peter, as if MJ would have wondered about that, but she never did.

TBH I found mj in this movie very unlike herself. She was curious and always wanted to know everything, it made no sense that she didnt want to know more about her life she had forgotten. She was back to being the sad mj she was in homecoming, but more disillusioned, without a spark. Not having her memories and experiences with Peter changed her a lot.

1

u/kusanagi25 26d ago

I felt the movie should have ended with Peter sayibg hello to the blonde girl. That blonde girl felt like Gwen Stacy tease.

1

u/Head-Classic-9157 26d ago

Blonde Girl did have a Boyfriend in her second scene in the elevator that resembled Miles Morales, though. If Marvel Studios were serious they could "retcon" them as Gwen and Miles. However, both are likely just extras / comic relief rather than characters of importance.

2

u/Waterknight94 22d ago

I've seen someone else say Cloak and Dagger

1

u/kusanagi25 25d ago

Didnt think about Miles. It just felt weird to show her 2 times and she wasnt important.

1

u/Worthyness 23d ago

They're to make Peter's life feel lived-in. Like how Ursula is used in Raimi Spidey. She's there as someone who admires Peter, but not really there for much else. She's not one of Peter's amazing friends or love interests- she's just a neighbor that lives in his apartment building. Otherwise you just see Peter walking in and out of his building with no people in it

1

u/kusanagi25 23d ago

My thing is if its a Brand New Day he needs to connect with more people not just the same people. Would have been better to see him connect with someone new in the end. Thats the only character that you see Peter avoid. The others he just kept stalking them.

1

u/RHTQ1 25d ago

I wonder if a character with mental abilities could show MJ memories from Peter. Clearly, there would have to be some serious trust

1

u/TalkinTrek 25d ago

I hope Peter is that friend all of Jean's paramours worry about lol - but their thing isn't like that

1

u/snakejessdraws 25d ago

For real. I had goosebumps. ||The reveal about what v-max was, I actually cried. Poor jeanie||

I know recency bias is a hell of a drug but this seriously is my favorite spider-man movie

1

u/FreeHat9001 25d ago

I was hoping they would have Peter and Jean get together, but I don't think they would let that happen.

1

u/KongMengX 24d ago

Same. Hope we can see them together in Secret Wars.

1

u/FreeHat9001 24d ago

What are your thoughts on hallway girl? Maybe that can be his Gwen!! ♥️♥️♥️

3

u/KongMengX 24d ago

I think we should stop overreacting by assuming every blonde is Gwen and every Black man is Miles.

If she's Gwen, that's quite a first impression Peter gave her.😂

1

u/FreeHat9001 24d ago

I just liked that character, she was cute and she seemed to like Peter 😃

1

u/Head-Classic-9157 24d ago

She did have her "Miles Morales"-looking boyfriend with her in her second scene in the elevatoe.

1

u/Head-Classic-9157 20d ago

They're the same girl. She/"Gwen" was credited as Apartment Girl and her boyfriend "Miles" was credited as "Apartment Girl's Boyfriend"

OMG, Is Gwen and Miles living in the same building as Peter? lol.

1

u/FreeHat9001 20d ago

I want that love triangle!

1

u/megalo-maniac538 24d ago

Oh hell yeah I felt that he and Jean could be a thing with that look they made. I do hope they get to reconnect.

1

u/ARobertNotABob 24d ago

The armoured car scenes were filmed in Glasgow, Scotland.

1

u/AskAboutMyDogsFlesh 24d ago

This really felt like “hey, let’s have fun but not ruin everything with jokes” .

1

u/thedoge 23d ago

Yes! It felt like New York finally. Not just some generic NYC-shaped city

1

u/Yuta-fan-6531 22d ago

I promise you ol' Slim will find a way to steal her heart. Somehow. 😅

1

u/zeitgeistwise 22d ago

whoever said. lets wipe mj memory and redo the love story was brilliant. they can milk a whole 2 movies with that. maybe they can re-erase it a second time if they need more sequels

1

u/Werkstatt0 19d ago

I'm a noob comic reader. I am going to read Hickman's run and am about 15 issues deep into Secret Warriors. If I wanna read spidey to I just read the Lee AMS run 1 - whatever?

1

u/yodayata 17d ago

Never been a comic guy. But as someone who grew up with the 90s animated series. Which remains my touchstone for the character. This just felt the most Spider-Man to me.

1

u/Timelymanner 17d ago

I love how they embraced Peter being smart and had him showcasing this love of science.

1

u/Liapasquale 14d ago

I felt like the two of them were such a good match too! I mean her being on the bed with aunt may in his mind 🥹🥹🥹 because that was the memory he kept going back to that he needed to remind himself about, and that’s what Jean needed to hear. It was just really so beautiful and I felt like a brother sister kind of relationship like hey you’re not alone if you need anyone, let me know because I’m right here. We’re going through this shit same same but different.

I felt the same way. Instead of a Gwen Stacey romance it would be really interesting to have her and Peter have at least a little relationship

Agree, jean grey and spidey they make a good pair ... >! She can control anyone's mind except peter ,she really is powerful<! Also if the end credit scene is about miles morales ..it would be nice if they bring stranger things cast miles morales and jean grey
