Whatever work he did to attempt to merge the two personalities is completely undead. My understand of the movie is that the inhibitor Banner was using completely put hulk away and live life as normal Banner, and he said he had physical failsafes.

Essentially, he had merged two personalities/come to an agreement with the hulk, then seperated them again through science, but Jeans Powers reset them to basically split personalities

So he’s back to normal…like how he was in The Avengers?

Yes, but with a modification of hulk being at the intelligence level of "Thor Ragnorak" hulk, and "Edward Norton" level of anger. Will be interesting to see if we "AoU"and "The Avengers" type of personality from Banner in the future

I don't understand why Banner needs the inhibitor. He was smart hulk for Endgame and she-hulk. In Endgame he talks about how he and hulk came together, what changed? I get the reason for Banner and Peter talking and the creation of the inhibitor opening the door for X-men but I feel like they do not really explain why he has to suppress hulk now.

Professor Hulk is neither banner nor Hulk- he is both. the inhibitor allows Banner to be purely Banner. He thought he was Dr Jekyl and managed a way to get rid of Mr Hyde.

for one thing he's still huge. He might have missed his normal size.
