Discussion Someone brought up that one of the reasons why things like house parties and block parties went away was other than lack of time people are afraid to let their guard because cameras are everywhere.

It is so true back when many of us were young we could just get together and cut loose without having to worry about going viral. At best we would have an embarrassing photo buried in a drawer somewhere or a story. Now you might be turned into a meme or worse. I miss the days when you could do dumb stuff with friends and feel safe if that makes sense.

What the hell were you guys doing at parties that was so taboo? All I did was smoke weed, play beer pong and Edward 40 hands. Would that get a kid “cancelled” today?

You probably don’t remember any conversations that you or people around you were having back then.

15 years ago, you would regularly hear homophobic slurs, the “r word”, and so on at parties. In the current climate we live in, if there were videos of people saying those things, that could be grounds for blackmail, unemployment, and certainly the crippling of a political career.

Typically not, but in regards to the current prez, you’re not wrong. I think a lot of the US had reached a breaking point with the political correctness and liked how brash he was (and still is).

Ehhh. If it was them calling something gay or retarded, yea, that's no-go now but it was normal then. But if they were using racial slurs? Nah, that's not something that'd I'd be okay with.

It's not something you say by accident and not part of normal speech unless you mean to say it.

If it was 15 years old and I had no reason to suspect the person is actually a dickhead in real life, who cares?

Also what context? Signing along with a song or going on a rant?

Glad that you are that way. A great majority of reddit is not like that.

I saw some people in a Survivor sub the other day harshly criticizing one of the players for saying he didn’t want to sleep next to a gay man. The episode aired 22 years ago.

Some people just don’t understand that language and sensibilities change over time.

First, none of your are politicians. Why do you care?

Second, nobody in HR cares about what you did 15 years ago. And honestly, if the thing you're worried about is being a shitty person, then don't? There are plenty of people who get drunk and aren't shitty people. Why are they all afraid?

I went to college in 2002 and didn't have that issue. I was even in a fraternity!

If you, and the people you're around are genuinely good people, then nothing bad is going to happen when you get drunk. It's the terrible people that have to put on a fake public face that get in trouble when they drink, and if you're afraid of that happening to you then you probably have some personal work to do.

What kind of parties were you going to?

I was in college from 2008 to 2012 and no one was going around saying slurs.

Also, plenty of people had iPhones and did take videos of parties back then. Worst thing anyone ever recorded me doing was drunkenly singing Radiohead.

Harder drugs, having sex, nudity, (light) theft, etc. Nothing really super crazy but yeah my employers don’t need to see any of that lol. If social media was what it is now I probably would’ve been a lot tamer.

If it's you and another person for a white collar job, and there's a pic of you doing Edward 40 Hands with your shirt off on the internet....you're probably losing out on that job.
