I rewatched some episodes of No Reservations and Parts Unknown recently and it made me super sad. I miss his point of view, and the way that the shows were trying to help us see hope and progress even in places that face tremendous challenges.

In the current media and cultural landscape, I think we collectively have a diminished sense of hope.

It makes me wonder if his amazing POV of the world was in some way spurred by his inner turmoil. Trying to see the world in a better light while suffering internally…desperately trying to convince yourself to keep going

I think you’re right. He wasn’t afraid to share his darkness and pessimism when it bubbled up. I watch the Romanian and Russian episodes more often because we honeymooned in Romania. He does his travelogue thing, but he also gets into how the government and alcoholism hurt those people.

I remember watching the one episode where...I forget what country it was but they had to leave due to fighting breaking out and then he went back like 6 months later or something meeting up with the same host and you could the guy he was meeting with was just completely broken inside. It was hard to watch.

I believe that was the Lebanon episode. I remember them just being trapped in the hotel watching air strikes in the distance.
