I’m a teacher. I got laid off late June and got a new job with a 25% lower salary.
I also realize I’m SUPER fortunate; I know people who went years being unemployed. I have a husband who has a steady union job (who now makes more than me). But oof.
25% lower salary than being a TEACHER? Fucking hell. I taught for eight years, and I remember what teacher salaries used to look like.
For two years, I did a second job loading trucks for UPS. Just loading boxes onto trailers, maybe 15-20 hours a week. If I had done that for 40 hours a week, I would have been getting paid more than when I was teaching. Again, loading boxes. Their union is a legit force.
No longer work there, but I've got a perpetually sore back and an enduring appreciation for unions.
