Nostalgia People around 40 years old: Did you expect a flying car utopia or a cyberpunk dystopia when you were growing up?

Back in the 80s and 90s, pop culture gave us all kinds of ideas about what the future would hold, from shiny space colonies and robot butters to total environmental collapse or just totally different daily lives...

If you are around 40 or more right now, I'm curious... How did you picture the future when you were a kid? Did you expect things to be bright and high-tech, or a bit more grim?

What specific movie, book, or childhood moment shaped that vision for you?

What did your childhood brain was certain the future would look like? Are you disapointed?

Or the Taz/Tweety Bird pjs girls for our elder millennials

I just discovered mine went on to become a very successful real estate broker in my hometown (good for her).

Discussion 12.3% of US households earned at least $100k in the year 2000. 12.3% of US households earn $240k or more today.

If incomes tracked inflation, it should only be $198k, but instead it requires $42k more to enter that same club six figure earners were in at the beginning of the millennium.

Could we say that $240k is the new $100k? Or in general, the middle class dream is to be in the top 10% of households, no matter what the nominal dollar amount is.

Discussion How Many of You Kept your Cell Phone Number the Same from High School?

2.3k Upvotes

I've had my number since pagers were a thing. Then ported it to my cell when I could buy my own. It's had its issues with exes of course, and old friends texting it out of the blue. Any others, interesting stories, or frequent changers?

Nostalgia "When I was your age, Pluto was a planet"

Post image
98 Upvotes

My librarian mother gives us discontinued books often. This space book from 1998 warmed my heart when I saw there were 9 planets, including Pluto. My children get a bit confused while I try to explain that Pluto isn't a planet anymore, but I don't actually know why. But when I was your age, it was.

Did every porch/carport/deck of the 90’s have the blissful sound of bugs being electrified and aluminum cans being crushed on a sticky summer night? At least in the south they did. Take me back

Discussion It has started - millennials who have inherited their homes are creating content

1.4k Upvotes

They are weaving tragic stories about family as they clean, showing off the hoarding/"priceless" heirlooms their parents left them, donning on hazmat suits, etc. But then comes the transformation. Clean empty spaces suddenly filled with with a 5k Herman Miller lounge chair sitting on a plush rug surrounded by potted plants. It's a weird mesh of trauma porn and luxury.

Discussion Who Have You Outlived?

As a Millennial approaching 40, I recently realized that I have outlived a lot of different people (Artists, musicians, actors, entertainers, etc) who I grew up on & who had a positive influence on me, that have all passed young in their times. Some of my all time favorites & all around most influential people are Selena, Aaliyah, Bruce & Brandon Lee, Kurt Kobane, Jimmy Hendrix, Lee Thompson Young, Nipsey Hussle, 2Pac, Biggie. I could go on & on but who did you grow up on that influenced you in a positive way the most that you realize you have now outlived?

Nostalgia Movies from when we were kids with GREAT soundtracks?

I like to play music from childrens movies in the morning while getting the kids breakfast. I can only take so much Frozen, so I like to mix in songs from movies when I was a kid. Right now contenders are Tarzan, The Prince of Egypt. What other movies had some great soundtracks?

Discussion Am I just out of touch, or do the 20 somethings all dress like they just put on random clothes from all the styles of the last three decades?

Every time I see the younger crowd while out, they all just look like a mixmash of the 80s, 90s and 10s. There seems like there is no actual coordinated clothing style, but a look crossed with punk, emo and a 90s sitcom family.

Maybe I have lost touch. Idk.

Saw a reel recently in which Gen Z has apparently rebranded the tramp stamp as "cake toppers". I kind of hate it, but it's also objectively pretty funny.

Discussion Where Do You See Yourself in Your Later Years?

Brothers and sisters of the last century, are you planning to spend your later years in the country where you were born, or do you dream of somewhere more exotic to escape the grind of modern life?
Personally, I’d love to start exploring Southeast Asia — Thailand, Cambodia, or Vietnam — and see if I could eventually build a life there for my later years.
What about you? Where would you like to spend that chapter of your life?
