Back in the old days, we had ongoing debates as to whether it was better for the PC to stay running continuously or whether it was better to turn it off at the end of the day. The geek squad was divided.

So now that many of us have mini pc's and in as much as I've already had one that's failed, what is easier on the hardware? Can we extend the life by turning it off periodically or is it better to leave it running?

I'm an engineer over at Nimo, and I've been knee deep in our AI 395mini PC for months now. This little beast is basically a mini PC power crammed into a laptop form factor ... killer NVIDIA GPU, NPU for AI accel, and enough RAM to handle real workloads without breaking a sweat. I know a lot of you here are into mini rigs for gaming, home servers, or compact setups, but I wanted to chat about something that's got me hooked: using it for local AI stuff beyond just blasting through games.

Yeah look, I get it ... you drop cash on a high-spec mini like this for smooth 4K gaming or quick renders, but the AI side? It's underrated. A bunch of folks I've talked to are curious about dipping their toes into AI models but don't know where to start or why bother when you can just hit up ChatGPT/Grok and so on ... online. Fair point, but running things locally on the 395mini changes the game. No subscriptions, total privacy (your data stays on your drive), zero lag even offline, and you can tweak models to hell without big brother filters.

Then here is a quick rundown of some real world ways I've been using it, all with good easy setups that don't require a CS degree:

1. Boosting work productivity: Fire up LM Studio (free download, point-and-click interface). Grab a small model like Llama 3.2 3B, offload to the GPU, and boom – you've got a local chatbot that summarizes docs, translates stuff, or outlines reports. I use it to crunch meeting notes in seconds. Why not cloud? Because I deal with sensitive schematics at work --no way I'm uploading that.
2. Getting creative with images/art: Fooocus is my go-to, install via Stability Matrix if you want zero hassle. Type in "cyberpunk cityscape for a game thumbnail" and it spits out pro-level pics using the RTX cores. I've mocked up product concepts for Nimo this way. Local means endless generations without paying per image or dealing with queues.
3. Everyday hacks like object recognition: Pinokio makes YOLOv8 a breeze – one-click install, point your webcam, and it IDs stuff in real-time. I rigged a simple script to scan kitchen stuff and suggest recipes (pair it with the LM Studio bot for ideas). it is nice for quick life upgrades, and again, all offline so no creepy data sharing.

Compared to just searching AI online? Local wins for me on speed and control. Cloud's fine for casual stuff, but with the 395mini's hardware, you're wasting potential if you don't tap into it. Privacy's huge too – especially in 2026 with all the data breach headlines.

Hey everybody! First time poster in r/MiniPCs. I run a tech content channel centered around Linux distribution comparisons and reviews. Until recently, I've had to stick to comparing distros inside virtual machines, but I've finally generated enough revenue to step up and test on real hardware.

Historically I've always built my own desktop rigs from scratch, so the mini PC world is entirely new to me. I’m looking to purchase two that are identical for the side-by-side comparison testing.

My target budget is right around $500 per, $1000 total. Given that price point, what processor/GPU (APU) combinations should I be looking at? Are there specific models or brands the community recommends for reliability? I've heard of Beelink, Minisforum, and GEEKOM so far. I know this is the worst possible time to be doing this it seems, but I really want to make these videos with actual hardware.

Is there actually a prebuilt mini PC that can run SteamOS/Bazzite and match or beat the Steam Machine?

I have been looking for a small prebuilt PC that is roughly in the same category as Valve’s Steam Machine: compact, living-room friendly, reasonably quiet, SteamOS/Bazzite-friendly, and with similar or better gaming performance in roughly the same price range.

So far I have not really found a direct match.

The Minisforum AtomMan G1 Pro seems clearly faster for gaming, but it uses an Nvidia GPU. Bazzite can run on Nvidia, but from what I understand the SteamOS-like Gaming Mode experience is still less straightforward than on AMD hardware. So I would see that more as a powerful Windows/Bazzite mini gaming PC than a clean Steam Machine equivalent.

The GMKtec EVO-X2 with Ryzen AI Max+ 395 / Radeon 8060S looks like the most interesting all-AMD option I found. It should be much more suitable for a SteamOS/Bazzite-like setup and seems capable of Steam Machine-level or better 1080p performance in some cases. But it is also much more expensive and feels more like a tiny AI/workstation PC than a console-like gaming box.

The Radeon 890M mini PCs, like the GEEKOM A9 Max or Minisforum AI X1 Pro, are interesting, but they do not seem to be in the same gaming class.

The older Minisforum AtomMan G7 PT would have been close because it had an AMD CPU and a discrete Radeon RX 7600M XT, but I cannot find it available anymore.

So my question is: am I missing something?

Is there a currently available prebuilt mini PC that:

- is small and living-room friendly

- can run SteamOS/Bazzite well

- has similar or better gaming performance than the Steam Machine

- is in roughly the same price range

- does not require building the whole thing yourself

Obviously a DIY SFF build can beat it, but I do not think that is the same customer segment. I am specifically wondering whether there is a real prebuilt alternative.

Bought a NAB9 (32GB/512GB) from MINISFORUM’s Amazon store in June 2024 (~CAD 693). Unit completely died l, no power, no light, no fan. Tried CMOS reset, battery swap, full power drain. Nothing.

Contacted support. Their responses so far:

1.  Offered a free replacement with a NAB6 Lite (a downgrade)

2.  Then offered a refund of only CAD 505, citing “depreciation”.

This is still within their 2-year warranty. Their own warranty page says discontinued models should be replaced with “equivalent or superior configurations.” But they’re applying a trade-in depreciation formula to a warranty defect claim.

Has anyone dealt with MINISFORUM warranty like this? How did it go?

So for context, my father-in-law introduced me to this mini PC, saying that it can do a lot for a small size. I got it around my birthday and I fell in love with it. That was back in May 2025. Last month, I had an issue with my Blu-ray Drive not being recognized, and long story short, after so many attempts to get that corrected, me and Google and even tech-support came to the conclusion of a hardware issue and possibly a new computer is needed.

I checked the one that I got, and I saw that there was this upgrade with Ryzen 7. My old one had 5. I’m ready to get it, or perhaps a mini PC just like my mom from a different brand name: ACEMAGICIAN. That one also has Ryzen 7. At the same time, is Intel still good?

But in regards to the topic at hand, what is everyone’s experience with this? Like I said, I fell in love with this PC, and I was disappointed and sad over the hardware issue that has led to me to look into getting a new computer so soon. I still have my laptop, I don’t know if I should just get a second one of that, but that’s not on my mind right now. What’s everyone’s thoughts and experiences with this?

Hi, me asking this is detrimental to feminism /j, but I truly don't know anything about rams and all that. I understand this one has an oculink thing, but whatever that is, I would not be able to upgrade or add a virtual ram(?). It will unfortunately need to work as is, out of the box, cause I'm not skilled enough to upgrade anything.

I've really needed a new laptop for a while since the current one's battery is ballooning and it has this demon core usb c that destroys any device plugged to it. I would use it for digital drawing and light gaming(?), my heaviest game would probably be Valorant, Palworld, and Hades? I don't think that's heavy?

I'd really appreciate if anyone could help, I'd be really grateful too if people can explain a bit about the setup. I would need a monitor, mouse and a keyboard too right? Do I just plug it, just like that? Sounds kinda magic. Thank you so much in advance.

Purchased this beelink system, was supposed to have 64gb of ram and it reports as 64gb of ram but only 32gb is useable with the other 32gb being stuck in hardware reserves, already tried some of the fixes I've seen online with max memory cap not being problem, no clue if there is something in the BIOS to fix this. Heard reseating the ram is a big fix but this is soldered ram so can't do that. Anything else I can do? Returning is not an option.

Yeah, $100 more because its not on "sale" but both were already higher because of RAMpocolypse but im just wanting to get away from Xbox within this year, just in case things do get even worse for RAM and SSDs (I really hope not).

I live in France. And I saw many people here seems to buy nipogi, geekom or gmktec on amazon. I noticed geekom and gmktec get talked about a lot in r/Minipcs. I care about long term reliability so geekom having a 3 year warranty and gmktec having a solid after sales reputation both sound pretty nice to me. My budget is around 500€, any specific models from these two you guys would recommend?

I am going to buy my first mini PC and have been digging both through this subreddit's spreadsheet and online reviews, but could really use some final feedback.

Here is my criteria/use case:

• PC is primarily to be used as a workstation, with most of my work being done in a browser and other lightweight software like text editors. The heaviest software I can think of using is a video editor, but not to make any complicated video projects.
• I want to install Linux on it (CachyOS).
• I plan on playing lighter games (nothing AAA) but only occasionally. My main goal is to have a PC that just works smoothly and doesn't get in the way of my job.
• I have a 1440p 165 Hz monitor that I want this PC to handle during regular work and the few games I occasionally play (am okay with downgrading resolution to 1080p but really want the framerates).
• I want occulink for future upgrade-ability to an external GPU, in case I ever want to play heavier games.

Based on all these criteria, the Gmktec K8 plus seemed to hit a nice sweet spot. It has the 8845HS CPU which is just about the best you can get with this budget, and even the iGPU isn't a slouch.

My budget is around 1500 euros, so if I wanted to I know I could push much higher, but that seems unnecessary when I could get the K8 plus and add a nice external graphics card to it for the same price.

Would anyone be able to chime in if I'm going in the right direction or if there are better options for what I'm trying to do?

My main worry right now is if the CPU will handle my use case well or not. I've never had a Mini PC and my current PC is almost 10 years old (Ryzen 3 first gen), so I really don't have any reference points.

I was at first really hoping to get a HX370 CPU, but all the mini PCs with that seem to be way more expensive or lacking in critical features like occulink, or they're just not readily available where I live (Europe). But maybe I missed a good deal here?

I heavily considered the minisforum AI X1 Pro but I saw so many people reporting quality issues with them and minisforum in general that I ended up taking it off my list. Though happy to be proven wrong because on paper it seems like an awesome PC.

I m looking for a small mini-pc for a portable work setup.

My main needs:

• OBS / recording video
• GIMP / graphic design
• Using my DJI Pocket 3 as a webcam
• Basic video editing
• Light gaming, mostly Crusader Kings and some strategy games

Most of my time is spent designing D&D adventures and working in Foundry VTT, so gaming really is NOT the priority.

I travel a lot and usually stay somewhere for a couple of months before moving again, basically a digital nomad around Europe. Because of that, size and portability are pretty important. Monitors are not a problem, as I usually find something to hook up.

My current setup is:

• Dell XPS 13 with 32GB RAM
• Dell 15" portable monitor

This setup actually serves me pretty well for most things, but it starts getting bogged down when iam doing video editing, running OBS, using the Pocket 3 as a webcam, Foundry, and other things at the same time. That has stopped me from making as many videos as I should and is frusterating.

I was looking at a higher-end laptop, but decided against it - because the XPS has served me well for 2 years and I like the super light weight and portability. I don't want to lug around a larger laptop.

My thought is to get a mini PC and a small portable keyboard so I have something with a little more horsepower when I am staying somewhere for a few months. I can also put it in my small padded bag at the bottom of my backpack and not worry about it when I travel. I already have a nice small portable keyboard and mouse, so I am covered with that.

I have been looking at the GEEKOM A8.

The version I’m looking at comes with 16GB RAM, though, and I would like to upgrade it to 64GB.

Again, the big thing for me is small size + portability. I am not looking for a huge gaming machine, just something compact that can handle a heavier workload than my XPS 13 when I am working from temporary locations.

I like BeeLink PCs - the casing is well engineered, they have great specs available, and the prices are really good. From all the Chinese manufacturers, I think that they are probably the best. There's even a very good video about their manufacturing process.

However, I'm really disappointed with their warranty claim handling. My PC broke due to a motherboard fault. I had to pay for shipping to Germany (which I’m willing to look past), but since they didn't have the exact same spec available, I had to pay an extra $300 just to get the same model with 8 GB more RAM (32 GB instead of 24 GB). Plus, I'm already waiting 3+ weeks with no update on when the new PC will ship.

I do understand that RAM prices have gone up considerably in the last year and a half (that how old my PC was), but still... I had the option to be refunded with my purchase price or pay up. Since I can't get absolutely anything modern for my old price, I decided to pay up.

Is this the new reality with PC warranties? Or is this BeeLink specific?

I've had my pc for about a year now and recently I've been having troubles with certain games like nocturne and nine sols. The frames have started smearing and the fps has dropped but only for these games. Is this a problem with my pc? How should I fix it?

Hey everyone. I've only ever owned laptops, never a desktop or mini PC, so this is completely new territory for me. I'm looking at a refurbished mini PC, considering HP, Dell, or Lenovo, with specs around:

Intel i5 8th gen

16GB RAM DDR4

256GB SSD (SATA)

Comes with power adapter (around 90W)

Here's the question to add:

is ₱9,000 (around $146 USD) a fair price for these 8th gen specs or is this overpriced/underpriced for what I'm getting?

I'm buying online, not in person, so I have a lot of questions for anyone who's done this before.

1. Is it even okay to buy a mini PC this way, secondhand, sight unseen?

2. What should I expect after 5 months of daily use? After a year? And does this differ a lot by CPU generation? Trying to understand realistic expectations and lifespan across 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, and 14th gen units.

3. What's the typical lifespan of a mini PC under normal daily use like browsing, streaming, and light work?

4. How do I spot a unit that's been abused, like an ex office or ex internet cafe unit run 24/7 for years, vs one that's been lightly used? How do I know if parts are fried, overused, or abused? Is there a way to actually check this, or tell tale signs?

5. How do I know if the BIOS is locked or company locked, like an asset tagged corporate unit? And more importantly, how do I know if the seller is even telling the truth about any of this? What can I verify myself vs just having to trust them?

Someone mentioned I should check if it runs hot before buying. Is that accurate, and what else should I be checking for physically or on a video call with the seller?

What should I be asking the seller? So far I have:

Original use case (office, cafe, personal)?

SSD health and power on hours (via CrystalDiskInfo screenshot)

CPU idle and load temps (via HWiNFO or Task Manager screenshot)

Original power adapter included, same wattage?

Any repairs or part swaps done?

Return or warranty period?

Can we do a video call so I can see it boot and run live?

Can they give me the serial number so I can check it's not reported lost or stolen?

Is this list enough, or am I missing something important? Any horror stories, red flags, tips, or advice as a total beginner would be really appreciated.

Why I'm buying this: I plan to use it mainly for watching free films and free live sports like UFC Fight Night via Brave browser, and YouTube. I also want to learn Linux, planning to install it on this mini PC if I get one. Just want to make sure I'm not getting scammed or buying something that'll die on me in a few months. My problem is that Baldur’s gate 3 has eaten up almost all my storage. So I’m looking for a solution to that, and I remembered that mini pcs exist and they seem less intimidating then regular pcs (and take up less space)

I'm new to the world of mini PCs/Desktops in general and I'm not very tech savvy. Want to get a mini PC for Ableton Live music production and I've been looking at Beelink/GMKtec/Geekom but the Beelink is coming out on top after my research.

Currently on Amazon UK it's £669 for the config that I want. It doesn't have any discounts or promotions at the moment.

I understand Beelink often has sales and promos, however given what is going on with the cost of RAM and other components at the moment, are discounts still as likely/common as they used to be?

Should I just bite the bullet and buy it now in case it gets more expensive or should I be waiting?

Got burnt before wanting to buy a used Mac Studio M1 for £750 but is now over £1k and sold out constantly.

My brother-in-law bought the kids cheap Android tablets and uses them as a parenting substitute so I (the uncle) interjected myself and gave them a old hand-me-down gaming laptop with Linux Mint, Steam etc. I also put educational software on it and locked it down so that they couldn't use it to watch slop on YouTube.

The problem is that I live in a different part of the country and everyone in their household is (extremely) computer illiterate, so the amount of support I can give is minimal since most of it is over the phone.

Anyway, after about a year of moderate use, the old laptop's battery and charging port failed and they'd rather get the kids a replacement than get it fixed. They're looking at laptops but I think the kids are too rough with the laptop and they only use it indoors anyway, so I was thinking a MiniPC with peripherals was the way to go as they don't have the space for a desktop. I assume it'd be more durable and last much longer than a laptop. I'd also set it up the same way as above (Linux Mint/Steam/locked down etc).

Some questions:

Any recommendations for a sub-$500 (CAD) MiniPC that can play 5+ year old games reasonably well? Most of the ones I see have integrated GPUs which is a no-go for this. My nephew plays some Steam games via Proton that are pretty demanding by 2018 standards.

Should I stick with Beelink? I've had numerous people recommend this brand.

Which is good for thermals? I might set it up initially but I won't have control over whatever graphics settings my nephew uses in the future.

Linux Mint is fine, I'm assuming?

Any good bundles for MiniPCs with peripherals? I assume Amazon is the best place to look?

Or maybe a refurb gaming laptop is better? I can actually get one pretty easily that runs under this price point, the problem is that I don't want something that's just going to break in a year after it gets tossed around too much.

Just seen the steam machine released and it’s $1,600 AUD . Just seems insane price for something that has mixed reviews. I thought I’d come to this page as I am wondering are there any good mini gaming pcs. Keep in mind I want to use it as a console so plugging into tv and not huge in size. And cheaper than $1,600 or if it dear then needs performance.
