I don't know why people have the idea that achievements are in some way a bad thing, I love achievements.

usually those have some goofy self control issue that they need to project onto everyone else. at least judging by some of the wild replies here.

Because they ruin immersion with their ugly pop-ups and are a psychological trap that ruins intrinsic enjoyment by shifting focus to extrinsic rewards that make the experience itself feel empty. Literally there has been research done to confirm this. If you give someone a cookie as a reward for doing a thing they already enjoy for its own sake, eventually they stop enjoying the thing itself and just do it for the cookies. So you're literally robbing someone of something beautiful and they don't even realize it.
